Onward State - PSU deserves a better rival

Locker Room material there.... Can't even get the helmet correct and its full of complete stupidity

I'm confused... .613 isn't that far ahead of .575, no? Especially over a span of 16 years. Did I misinterpret Craig Meyer's tweet?

Mike Reisman
is a senior Supply Chain Management major with an Economics minor (Read: Business Douche) from South Jersey. He has an intense fear of graduating so please don't bring it up. He writes about stupid things nobody cares about, and student life if the site is low on content that is clearly supposed be funny but is really very unfunny. He is lovingly (?) known around the staff as Baby Mike which may or may not be because he has a child (hint: it’s not). He’s also a second generation Penn Stater who has been wearing Penn State sweatshirts since before he was two, a habit he hasn’t grown out of. If you really hate yourself, you can follow him on twitter at @mike_reisman or email him at mikereisman@onwardstate.com

I would argue that he is more than a "Business Douche" from South Jersey, but what do I know.

The guy that wrote this is getting blasted by not only Pitt fans, but other BIG 10 fan bases on the twitter replies. I guess he also wrote an article saying Franklin is a superior coach to Harbaugh.

Shows this guy is a moron.

The fact is if not Pitt, who is their rival? Ohio State or Michigan? No they have each other and don't give the Nits a second thought. Michigan State? No, they would think of Michigan in that light. Iowa, Nebraska, Wisconsin? No, no and no. So I guess who psu "deserves" is Rutgers or Maryland. But maybe they are right, both are regional programs much like psu have been this century.

how many on this board have said they don't want to play psu or wvu? like walt just said, no person should have the power to say no to this game. its important.

We should not have either school on the schedule until their fans can better behave. All schools have problem fans, but those two institutions have probably the worst two fanbases anywhere. It is a shame because they are Pitt's two closest rivals.

Why? I've said it repeatedly, I don't want the game played considering the current condition of their institutional priorities.

It isn't important. It's a frickn' GAME. What is important is not whitewashing a culture that enabled the serial rape of children.

There sure is a lot of interest in the game, standing room only seats going for 150 bucks. Its important and people are voting with their wallets. barnes has openly talked about the interest in this game and how many people that will be there this saturday. we need more games like this and less games like YSU and Villanova.

Well that is not true. We have Ohio State, Michigan and Michigan State, so we don't really need to have more big rivals. I don't think Pitt and PSU are right now that different on the field, of course stressing on the field. The programs aren't close in size and importance.

Every tOSU, UM and Sparty fan that I've spoken with dosn't seem to think of PSU as a rival. Certainly a big time game when both programs are very good in a given season. But, not a rival.

tOSU - Michigan
Michigan - tOSU and Sparty
PSU - ???

I'd say Syracuse is more of a rival to Pitt given they're played far more often than PSU has played any of the teams you mentioned are to PSU.

The arrogance and complete lack of self awareness is astounding. Do these morons realize they aren't elite any longer and haven't really been close?

http://onwardstate.com/2016/09/08/penn-state-deserves-a-better-rival-than-pitt/

Wow, why wouldn't they want a true rival like Pitt? Let's face it, Michigan has Ohio St and Mich St. and the B1G elite are not gonna be intense rivals of Penn St. Penn St is a middle of the pack team in the B1G right now, and show no signs of upward movement. Until they do, they are not strong enough to be rivals of the big 3 I mentioned, more than they are now. Also, they admit the intense rivalry and emotional forum between the fanbases, so, as much as some of them do not want it to be, it is there. Pitt wants a Penn St rivalry above the WVU one of recent past, and so called Syracuse one in the ACC. It is just a natural, the same as Auburn is to Alabama, instead of LSU, despite the big games between the latter. Talk is cheap, and their intent is to keep Pitt 'below' them. They better hope they win, because they will have a hard time convincing themselves and others of their self-perceived superiority going forward.

Yes, $ always wins out. I guess that is a good thing to some.

this is true, absolutely true. psu doesn't have a true rival in the big 10. maybe it will end up being rutgers.

urban, coach khaki pants and dantonio treat psu like a red headed step child. franklin cannot coach on game day, those others excel on game day.

I mean, a great thing for Pitt and Syracuse would be to see both programs rise up again. That could be a great rivalry and is Pitt's crossover match up year in and year out in the ACC. I'm always rooting for the Cuse to get back on track as a program. They used to have some damn fine teams in the 90s. And, I recall the Carrier Dome being brutal venue to visit. Just tough as to snag a win there when Syracuse was good. Hopefully their most recent hire does the job.

Paco, I respect your opinion, but I do not agree based on circumstances. I agree that PSU should either not have a football program right now, or they should be just starting a program right now. With that said no matter what you or I think, they were allowed to keep their program. Many other fine institutions have played them since this went public, including their Big 10 brethren, Georgia, Navy,Army, Temple, and our ACC brethren Syracuse, Boston College, and Virginia and verious smaller schools. If none of those institutions are morally superior to play them, then Pitt can't act holier than thou either.

I view this at what it is, a long time rival that is being renewed, and our chance to really punish them. If you think not playing them is punishing them, then you are mistaken. If Pitt wants to punish PSU, then beat them. If Pitt wins all 4 years, many of these cult members will go under a rock and stay there.

Again, i respect your opinion but I do not agree with it. I say play them every year if we can.

None of those other schools, nor their fan bases, have close up views of what is going on in Central Pennsylvania. Nor are they as directly affected by it. Of course, many don't agree with my opinion on this. Luckily for those individuals, I'm not in charge.

Although I suspect many on here would be surprised with what would been done differently over the last 20 years if I had been.

Paco,

Temple has a close up view and they play them. Also those other schools may not have a day to day view like Pitt and Temple do, but those other institutions know what is going on in State College today. Not sure what you mean by directly affected. I am repulsed by their actions but I nor anyone I know was directly affected. In fact the only ones who were affected by these horrendous acts were Penn State fans. That is why Jerry was able to lure them in, because he baited them with Penn State football.

Trust me I wish more was done to Penn St, they should be starting to field their first team since 2011 if it was up to me, but it is not. My point is they were allowed to continue to compete and other institutions that are no less morally just than Pitt played them, so it would just be grandstanding to refuse to play.

I have no relationship to Temple. I'd be advocating the same no matter where. Don't worry, Pitt isn't listening to me either.

Trust me, the scandal has tainted the whole of Pennsylvania. When you talk to people not from the region, you see that. And the Pennsylvania legislature has wasted more resources than it ever should have on this.

And I absolutely disagree that other schools have any real idea what is going on at Penn State. People outside the region are generally incredulous about what is going on there. They think it is a minority of whackjobs who think this way. They are aghast when the discover the actual scope.

I'll tell you what they deserve:

They deserved the death penalty...

They deserve to be ridiculed and laughed at...

They deserve to lose every game...

They deserve to be reminded everyday that Joe Knew...

Anything else they deserve????

Why does it surprise anybody that the PSU fan has a distorted view of reality? They are the school that has been implicated in the most heinous scandal in college sports history. Their long time HC has been exposed as a sanctimonious phony. Their Senior Administrators still await criminal trials....and yet they deserve better.

This is a perfect window into the self deluded arrogance of this fan base. What they don't get is that big name schools want nothing to do with them. Why would they?

Question for you:
Which big ten team considers penn state to be their biggest rival?

None. For all of the negative feeling about the Hoopies, it is actually one of the better rivalries in the country. I would view the Brawl, the way Michigan views games vs Michigan St. Not the number one rival, but a damn good one. Penn St. has no one if they don't play us.

pennsylvania deserves a better state university than penn state
Yes, except the problem is that many Pennsylvanians contributed to the situation, and continue to defend the actions of the Nitter adminsitration/coaching staff.

Just no.

Ped State with its cult of fans makes WVU and their fans look classier than Brits having High Tea with the Queen of England!
