Grabbed some 2 weeks ago on my way back from Hilton Head. Not worth it otherwise.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but as of a year or so ago, PA has the highest gas tax in the country, right?

What is all of that tax money intended to be used for? Bridges, roads, corruption?

Just came back from NJ... cheaper and you don't have to pump.

I would really like to see an accounting of where that added tax money has been spent?

State Gasoline Tax Rates as of 7/01/19:

California now has the highest tax at 61.2 cents per gallon.

PA has the second highest tax at 58.7 cents.

Some neighboring states:
New York = 45.96 cents.
New Jersey = 41.4 cents.
Ohio = 38.51 cents.
Maryland = 36.7 cents.
West Virginia = 35.7 cents.
Delaware = 23 cents.

In addition, there is a Federal Tax of 18.4 cents per gallon.

These other states have different ways of getting their money. Some charge property tax on vehicles. Many charge far more than the $36 annual registration fee charged by PA.
Another revenue stream is tolls, such as the Pennsylvania Turnpike which goes up every year.

Our California registration fee is around $300-$400 for each per year with a 2016 truck and 2019 SUV.

I live in Illinois. Our state tax on gas is around 40 cents. Just went up with the new Governor and one party monopoly in office. They just jacked up the license plate sticker annual fee to $150. It was about $35 around 15 years ago. Just terrible here.

I didn't realize PA's was that low, I live in Michigan and it depends on the MSRP and age of the vehicle I think mine was around $130. The gas tax up here is 26 cents a gallon and the roads are horrible thanks to 8 years of neglect by the former GOP Gov and Legislature, they put barely any money into maintenance.

Yep, out state government in its endless quest for additional revenue is now funding the state police with turnpike funds, which is why they plan to raise the tolls every year for the foreseeable future. The turnpike is now just a source of cash for things that should paid out of the general budget.

Yeah, because when I think of good roads I've traveled on in the last 35 years, Michigan is near the top.

Fun Fact: Michigan roads suck regardless of the party in charge.

True that.. EZ pass got a work out.
I saw an article/news piece in the local Pgh. area .
People with EZ pass better keep an eye out on there monthly statements.
One lady used it to travel from Monroeville to Irwin . About 10 miles ?
And was getting hammered . The turnpike commission had the audacity to blame it on either the positioning of the monitor or the age of it never alerting customers that something unusual was going on and that they were being charged out the wazoo .
The turnpike commission is corrupt and has been for 45 years .

Not even close. Can you say California and Hawaii? That is per AAA survey for June 2019.
Lowest prices: Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana. I will pass on living in any of them.

It’s worth it to live here though. And, being retired I only have to fill up the tank once a month. Sometimes less. Gas prices here are close to $4 gallon for standard grade, pump your own, about 80 cents a gallon higher than PA per AAA.

Not according to every article I've read. Here's one that says that PA did have the highest gas tax in 2018.

  • "At the start of this 2018, seven states raised taxes on gasoline, while two states lowered the tax. Pennsylvania lowered taxes by six tenths of a cent, but the state still has the highest gas taxes in the country."
https://247wallst.com/special-report/2018/01/26/states-with-the-highest-and-lowest-gas-taxes-6/

Edit to add: Don't assume that state tax is the only reason one state may have more expensive gasoline than another.

California raised its gasoline tax on 7/01/19 and is now higher than Pennsylvania.

I know that.

The point I initially made that as of a year ago (2018) Pa had the highest state tax. And they did.

Just because prices at the pump have, for years, been higher in Ca and HI, doesn't mean that they always had the highest tax; which is what mike412 claimed.

Gas in those two states will always be, and for a very long time have been, higher than most states. But, it doesn't mean that they always have the highest tax.

I would be willing to save $1000 on gas per year, and pay an extra $100 for registration renewal.

You would really need to be buying a lot of gas to save $1000. Virginia's gas tax is listed at 16 cents per gallon. Pennsylvania's is 59 cents per gallon. If you buy 800 gallons of gas a year (just over 15 gallons per week) you pay $128 in taxes in Virginia and $472 in Pennsylvania. If you drive a $20,000 car in PA you pay a $36 registration fee. In Virginia you would pay $840 in property tax on that car.

PennDOT is in the process of replacing a bridge on a road that runs through a property I own. The bridge was basically two steel beams with 2x10's stacked upright between the beams and covered with tar and chips. It's not a heavily used road but it provides access to a popular hunting and recreational area. You have so much old and outdated infrastructure in this state that it's going to take ages to clean it all up.
