OT: Best kept secret (Restaurant) in the region

Re: Della Terre in Harmony....last night

I had the Sunday Sauce too. As I said the food was good, just not good enough to go all the way back there. If we did I'd probably try out a pizza.

Also.....

I read a few months ago that Maggiano's was coming to the North Hills, behind North Hills Village? I never read anything again, but for an Italian chain, by far, it is our favorite. A clear step above the Olive Garden and Buca. I've often wondered why they haven't tapped into this market. I suspect it would do very, very well in Pittsburgh. Also looking forward to all the restaurants announced for the new development on McKnight. It never ceases to amaze me how few establishments there are up here to eat. It's no wonder they are all jammed, all the time.

I have eaten at one of those out in Chicagoland. Yeah real good. Unfortunately again, Pittsburgh needs another solid Italian restaurant like the Vatican needs another catholic.

Eaten at the one in downtown philly. Excellent restaurant for as you said, being a chain

We hit Maggiano's in Nashville last year...outstanding.

I'm past my Guys & Dolls music stage, but it wasn't intrusive. Fabulous bar, great menu, all delivered nicely.

As for North Hills restaurants....I go back to the day when there were 3 choices:
1. Hartner's in Crammedberry....now a drug store.

2. McKnight Smorg-a-Style....now Ross, I think.

3. Tic-toc shop in Kaufmann's.....where Steinmart & Big Bird now reside.

I don't count Amy Joy Donuts as a restaurant. ;)

The population growth has been crazy....and new stuff going up all over. Tough for the restaurant folks to keep up. What is a "Dover Saddlery"?? Going into the old Red River BBQ in front of Target, which has been shuttered for, oh....15 years or more??

To answer my own question...

Dover Saddlery is an equestrian store. Seems like a strange location, but??

Coincidentally.....

I actually met one of their owners back in December. I may have some of the details wrong but in a nutshell, they have a very strong online retail business and are now venturing into owning a few stores. I too was extremely surprised at the location choice, but he insisted that they did a lot of marketing research and given what was available, pricing, etc., this was it for them. It seems like an extremely niche business and riding is generally a very expensive hobby. I honestly can count on 1 hand the families I know that are involved in horses, at least in this general vicinity. I am suspicious how well it will do, but hey, I'm all for finally getting rid of that old, run down bbq joint.

Did you know the original plan was to put a GetGo there but was nixed for a variety of reasons. Building in McCandless has always been an adventure.
(Edit: I just looked them up online and it appears that they have a lot of retail stores, so I'm not sure what he meant. It could be that the business started online and moved to include retail? Either way, I am going to be very curious if this will be viable.)

Meanwhile, WalMart's putting in a super-store across the street.

That means our treks south to McKnight will be fewer, as traffic will be worse. Fortunately, we can find most of what we want/need in Crammedberry.....except Trader Joe's, Steinmart and Half-priced books (quickly fading to E-books).
Where will the Maggiano's be?

The articles said behind the Northway Mall and that a Sak's and Nordstrom's discount store were also moving in. As I said I read this last year and haven't seen anything since then, so not sure. Given all the movement lately, I wouldn't be surprised as that corridor between Northway Mall and the Rave is virtually exploding.

The Wal-Mart will be about 5-10 minutes from my house. Far enough away that it will have absolutely no impact on my neighborhood, but close enough to get there quickly. Ironically I really don't enjoy Wal-Mart at all. Mr. Pitt-girl buys our bird food there, but I never go to the one in Cranberry. The parking lot alone can bring on a case of PTSD.

Revisiting the Italian restaurant theme, we continue to enjoy Bella Frutetto and Pomodoro's. Very close and quite good.

Bella Frutetto is PDG. Haven't been to Pomodoro...but I

sure bought a lot of Pizza Roma stuff at that site, when I lived in Hunters' Point. Almost bought a place in Northmont Farms in 1989. Ever go into "Somewear Special"?? A good friend was the owner. Started out selling customized blankets for dorm rooms.

There is some sort of construction going on next to Marshall's. I imagine it has something to do with the new stores and Maggiano's.

I really enjoy this thread and it's good to see that there is a growing food scene in Pittsburgh. I can't help but notice how stinking far away all these places are, though. I've been spoiled living in a city where there are tons of places within walking distance and by public transit. Pittsburgh needs to do something about making all these places (at least within the city) more accessible.

Ski, regardless of your political views, the people of this region need to keep sending the same people back to Washington again and again. WV. has more highways to nowhere thanks to the late Senator Byrd. We need to expand our "T" system to all the suburbs and Oakland and complete the Mon Fayette Expressway for Starters. This region is so far behind other major cities on this front it is ridiculous.

Ski - this thread started out as best kept secret restaurants, but frankly there are so many great places now downtown, Lawrenceville, shoot even Braddock is getting into the action, just not so much a secret. Was just at the Butcher and the Rye - fabulous, especially if you like bourbon. So don't despair, the food scene around the city has grown exponentially the last 10 years and it continues.

Ski, Downtown as Butcher and the Rye, Meat and Potatoes, the Fairmont, Sienna, Sienna Mercato, Ten Penny, Proper Brick Oven and Tap, and many other nicer places all within walking distance. The culinary scene downtown is vibrant.

I stand correct in my reading of the thread! You guys are right that it is about lesser known places. And I'm glad to hear that things are pretty vibrant in the city. Alas, I haven't spent nearly as much time in Pittsburgh lately to be able to judge, but I'll definitely have to plan a trip and check some of these places out while I'm there.

To the guy asking about the Payne Hill Grille....Yes the Head Basketball coach for Point Park owns the joint. He's there all the time. Great story teller and realist when it comes to college athletics. (Hes there to win games...does not give a shit about the kids classes)

Kassab's on the South Side used to have really good Lebanese Food. Havent been there in a few months but I used to go all the time. Assume it is still really good.

I love the Lebanese.

All of that maybe true...but the food is just okay! There are much better local food establishments. T&D's Pub and Grub, The Interchange and Rockwell's Red Lion all are better choices and within a mile of the place.

Not the well known places.......but the spots that only locals know.......

I will start.......

Cenacola's in Irwin. Located in an industrial park. Started as a pasta making facility when the owner decided to start serving meals. There are a number of wine barrels lined up with stools on each side.....which act as the bar area while waiting for a table......

BYOB....and trust me.......it is freaking outstanding.
Vastly, vastly over rated. Every dish contains way too much oil. Unexceptional pasta dishes and bland apps.
Are you guyz serious? Never heard of it! BUT if the "Google" location pin is correct.....it's on top of my dad's old house. Not actually, when I zoomed in....it looks more like Mica Dr. in "downtown" Hahntown NOT Irwin! Go to the Miner's Club...good food and a heckuva lot cheaper.

La tavolla up on mt washington!

Nordstrom café in the Ross Park Mall. Good healthy food at reasonable price. You pay at the counter on your way in and the wait staff brings food to the table. Salads and sandwiches very good and if you want they also have beer and wines. I don't know many people who even thought Nordstrom had a café.

Good call....nice folks, very good food.*

Nordstrom café in Ross Park Mall. You will be surprised as most don't know it exists and is very good.

This is true. I've eaten there a number of times. Great tomato basil soup.

Can anyone really tell me the overall attraction the Cheesecake Factory?
I accept that we aren't true "foodies" - I think the food at CF, although WAY overserved, is actually pretty good. And it is possible to order in a fairly healthy way. Wine is reasonably priced, nice atmosphere and my kids love the cheesecake (I dislike cheesecake, so I have no opinion on it). It is always way too crowded, but again that is because of the lack of restaurants in the area. IMHO their food is better than California Pizza Kitchen.

When we shop at Ross Park we usually dine at CF especially in the summer, we like the outdoor seating. We seem to get the same thing always, chicken belagio or chicken Madeira. We do not go for their cheesecake and can add they have great coffee(Peets).

Ended up at Casbah in Shadyside, the best filet mignon I've ever had.
I am normally disappointed by pork chops I get when eating out - usually dry and chewy. The pork chop at Casbah is the house specialty and is absolutely amazing.

RJ,, the table next to us had the pork chops, he sounded like Bill Murray in the movie What about Bob while eating the chicken. My wife had the pan seared scallops, delicious.
