OT - Big Cliff to Rutgers

He has to get out of Rutgers ASAP
Lol he just landed a top 40 player who is a program changer. He’s not leaving unless it’s a blue blood or Connecticut. They have talent all over NJ (that he’s clearly capable of landing). He’s making over 3 million dollars in the big ten. He’s a Northeast guy. You can’t be this dense.

You must believe that Capel has to get out of Pitt, ASAP, as well.

Rutgers is a dead end

Lousy facilities, worse basketball conference. The only thing they have going for them is proximity to NYC.
Pitt’s facilities aren’t much better, big ten was a MUCH BETTER conference this year. They have a better recruiting ground, a better roster and an All American coming in. They’re in a better spot than Pitt.

Rutgers is currently giving them better resources and facilities than they’ve ever had.

Explain how Rutgers isn’t in a better spot than Pitt right now?

The RAC is a big HS gym. They play in a league where only 2 schools are closer than 10 hours away making road trips for family tough. The Big Ten doesn't have as much cache in the NE as the Big East and ACC. And Rutgers is known as the laughing stock of college basketball. They still haven't made an NCAA Tournament since 1991.

B11 may have been better this year but I'm looking long term

And the Pete >>> The RAC. The RAC is a glorified version of Fitzgerald Field House.

I'll give you that your recruiting ground is better. I don't think everything else is better long term.

Pikiell is a good coach and I’m happy for BK. With that said. Put the Rutgers Pom-Poms down. We beat Rutgers this year in case you forgot, and the ACC has been the far superior basketball conference other than this year and it isn’t even close.

Glorified? I have been there. It is the Field House. Nothing glorified about it.

Well, we did manage to beat them 71-60 in the ACC-BIG challenge game. ;);):)

Admittedly it does look like Rutgers is on their way up (20-11 last season) and North Jersey does have lots of local high school talent for a recruiting base.

That being said, I am not convinced they will be any better or worse than Pitt will be over the long term. IMHO, Capel is about 1 or perhaps 2 seasons behind Pikell in their respective rebuilds. Capel's 14-19 (3-15 ACC) and 15-16 (6-14 ACC) first 2 years look very similar to what Pikell achieved in his first 2-3 years (See below). We shall see what happens.

Here is what Pikell's results have been at Rutgers (years 1-4):

Year Record BIG Record
2016-17 15-18 3-15
2017-18 15-18 3-15
2018-19 14-17 7-13
2019-20 20-11 11-9

They’ve been a punching bag for a long time, but with Pikiell and Schiano, they’ve got things going in the right direction.

They had a few things line up in their favor with Cliff on top of just flat out working everyone. ASU hired an assistant with ties to Cliff and probably had him in the bag up until the last month or so. Rutgers made a big final push and, thanks to the virus, recruiting an East coast kid was all but impossible for ASU. This one stings for them.

Rutgers has a brand new $100m practice facility. It's as nice as any in the country.

And the RAC may not be nice but it's always packed and a great home court advantage. Rutgers was 18-1 there this season

Good for Pikiell to get Rutgers to the NCAAs. That is a big accomplishment we can all agree.

But who could walk into both the RAC and the Pete and consider them similar facilities?
Anyone who saw their new practice facility which puts our practice gym to shame. Pete is a great place for a game, WHEN ITS ROCKING. Been pretty cavernous lately. Capel has upgraded the amenities for the players which were EMBARRASSING compared to the rest of the ACC before him. Honestly one of his biggest wins at Pitt.

Wow a practice facility that is worth more than the arena they play in. Real impressive

Being in New York or New Jersey is probably the biggest negative in the world right now this side of Italy.
Living anywhere in the world right now has issues and until this is under control there will be no bb anywhere .

ps ..Shows you that facilities aren’t everything to everybody

Please tell me they really didn't build a $100 million practice facility instead of a new arena since they currently play in a sh!thole.

Practice facility is more important to players than game arena. They spend A LOT more time there.

Like Syracuse, the Dome is a dump but they have a sick practice facility named after Carmelo.

Basketball is a lot different than football when it comes to jobs IMO. Like I agree there are dead ends in football, but in basketball the coach there makes the job.

Wow, what a waste of money the Pete was then. We should have built an awesome practice facility and kept playing at the FH.

Will the victory heights building have to do with the pitt bball facilities?

If they had been able to make the field house super nice with 8K seats and kept the stadium, I would have gone for it. I think Fitzgerald was just too small though. And the Pete is exponentially better.

Sometimes these old, small gyms can be made really amazing. Look at Northwestern's renovation.

Yes. That was needed because the practice gym and ancillary facilities which I saw a couple of times several years ago (Dixon era) was pretty bare bones. That being said, I don't believe there is any need to build a complete new separate practice facility building. My sense is that what we have now (I haven't seen the new amenities personally) is either as nice as needed, or can be made to be, The physical space is available in the Pete, IMHO.

As far as I have read it is only for the non-revenue sports.

Maybe we should remodel and turn the Pete into an upscale practice facility and then move all our games to the PPG Arena. Then we can imitate Georgetown and share space with an NHL team. ;););)

Not much. But, when the new fitness center is finished, they’re planning on repurposing the student gym in the Pete to athletic space...I think most of that is ticketed to become an academic support hub for athletes, but I’m not sure if they’re also planning on building out the basketball team suites or weight training areas a little more as well.

What would really be nice for both basketball programs is a second practice court, like what Duke has at their facility adjacent to Cameron Indoor. Then, you could guarantee that both men and women could practice whenever they wanted without interfering with each other, even if the main gym at the Pete is occupied. That’s a bigger buildout question that I don’t have an answer for.

The Pete has never rocked as the Field House did with Tiger Paul running up and down the court it was great , but it was hot and the seating was highly uncomfortable.

I agree. That's what recruits want. Once we turn the Pete into a practice facility, recruits like Cliff will start rolling in.

The existing academic support area in the Pete which I toured about 4-years ago seemed very nice and of a decent size. So, if they move that function to the area now occupied by the Pete's student gym they would certainly gain some space to work with where the existing academic support area is currently located.

From what I recall from about 9 years back when my kid was at Pitt, whenever there was a conflict one team practiced on the Pete's main arena floor when the other used the practice gym. Also, is there no longer an ability to have a basketball practice at Fitzgerald since it has been re-purposed for other sports? As far as I know they haven't used it for basketball practices for either men or women in years. It could potentially serve the needed purpose of a second gym if desired, I suppose, unless its remodel/ repurpose precludes that possibility. Anybody know?

You are the king of being dramatic.

All I’m saying is what matters to fans doesn’t necessarily matter to players. The Pete, for fans, is probably in the Top 10 or so arenas in CBB just in terms of modernness and amenities. But the locker rooms and player lounges, and practice facilities were lagging WAY behind the rest of our competition.

And that is what will matter to players and where they spend all their time. They don’t really care what the bathrooms, concession stands, seats, scoreboards, etc. are like.

Then how wasnt the Pete a huge waste of money when we could have spruced up the FH and built a great practice facility? Fans ultimately spend money on winning teams and if recruits only care about practice facilities, by your logic, the Pete was a mistake.

Most of this is correct. Would say it’s more top 25ish than top 10.

The players area at the Pete was like an army barracks not so long ago.
