ok, i'll start the fantasy land rumor mill. Every time Cowher is brought up as a potential coach, he rejects it, but NEVER closes the door on coaching again, saying it's highly unlikely. What does that mean?

To me, it means that it has to be the right opportunity and at the right time.

Right Opportunity = a team that he has a connection to that he would have a lot of influence on player personnel and doesn't have a meddling owner like Snyder or Jones.

Right Time = Good team, Franchise QB, ability to win a SB in 3 years, having an assistant HC who would do the majority of time consuming BS that coaches do during the daily grind that wore him out.

I think the Steelers are the team he would come back for. The reason he says highly unlikely...He doesn't think Tomlin will be ousted while the Steelers still have Ben with a Super Bowl window. Rooney should put the feelers out on Cowher and if he would come back, then i'd be all in for dumping Tomlin asap.

I also think he would consider the Chiefs and Browns. Chiefs are not getting rid of Andy Reid any time soon. I'll be interested to see if the Browns reach out to him. They should.

NFL is completely different from what it was 15 years ago. That conservative style offense that guys like Cowher and Wanny utilize is long gone and is never coming back. Narduzzi uses a similar mindset and look how lost and out of touch Pitt's offense is.

If Cowher is smart he will stay retired.

I think the only way Cowher would be the Steelers’ coach again was if things took such a drastic turn that he came in for a year and helped bridge the organization into a new era. But at that point, why not appoint someone on the staff already such as Munchak?

If we’re going to speculate on who will be the head coach after Tomlin, here’s an interesting tidbit: 10 of the 16 Steelers head coaches (including the last four) were hired in their 30’s. Do they continue that trend? If so, do they go after someone like Brian Flores (DC, New England) or do they take the LA/CHI route and hire a young offensive guru?

I think the Steelers go the same route they’ve gone in the past. Hire a young coordinator with a somewhat dynamic personality. No clue whether it works or not, it’s not like they have a lengthy track record. Cowher and Tomlin were both good fits, but when you have 3 coaches in 50 years it’s not like you have a lot of experience looking for one.

HELL NO! Last thing I'd want is Cowher! I want an OFFENSIVE MIND for 2020 and beyond, not some guy that will try to run out the clock with a VERY TINY lead, like 16points.

If you want a bridge, Munchak would be the guy. After that, BA would be the guy. But that’s not how the Steelers do things. Plus, Tomlin is here as long as he wants.

Another guy who is Similar to Cowher in all the ways you said, is Tony Dungy. He’s expressed no desire to coach again. But I bet he’d listen to the Steelers. I’d take him. In a heartbeat.

I’d bring him back tonight.

Both Cowher and Dungy have been gone way too long, the game has passed them by.

1) hire good coordinators
2) manage the players and coaches and games.

That’s what both guys could do that Tomlin is poor at.

Both guys need to simply be senior executives and be able to handle the player personalities consistently. The players are no different today. AB is no different than the ochoCinco or TO of 12-15 years ago.

Neither are coming back. But both would be better than Tomlin.

Cowher and Tomlin both won one Super Bowl. Both are overrated. Both had bad losses. Both underachieved. So what’s the difference between the two?

The difference in my opinion, is that Cowher is most comparable to Jamie Dixon. Dixon fans didn’t want to see Jamie leave because they felt that his regular season performance was good enough to give his team a chance in the post season every year. Bill Cowher did the same thing. He won the games he was supposed to in the regular season, generally would win a game in the playoffs and put his team in position to win championships. Then when the talent dipped, his record dropped but he rebuilt for a couple years and then competed for championships again.

Cowher and a Tomlin both underperformed in the playoffs but many feel that cowher, much like Dixon, had his teams overachieving during the regular season.

With a group like the Steelers have had the previous 4 years, Cowher would have won playoff games, and wouldn’t have blown 4th quarter leads with this team and would probably be sitting with at least a 1st round bye.

Cowhers record and Tomlins record speak for themselves. I’m not saying that Cowher had a better career. Both have had good careers. People forget that fans moaned about Cowher the same way that they bitch and moan about Tomlin. I just think that right now, with this team, Cowher would do a better job. I honestly can’t point to anything Tomlin is doing well right now. He’s mangled this franchise. What would you say Tomlin is doing right currently in 2018-2019?

Would Cowher have still had Dick LeBeau, Ken Whisenhunt and Bruce Arians on his coaching staff the previous four years too?

One of the best things Cowher has going for him is he’s been gone long enough, his many faults have been forgotten.

I agree that people forget. But he had good coordinators. One of which would be good here-mike Mularkey looks to be the new OC in Atlanta.
