Never thought I’d see the day that CBS (channel 2 locally) is airing the UEFA Champions League round of 16 live at 3pm today. C’mon Chelsea!

in related news, UEFA is threatening to pull the Champions League Final, originally to be held in Russia, over the Russian aggression in Ukraine.

sorry for posting. Just thought it was interesting sports news during a slow time to post here that Euro soccer is being carried on network television on a weekday.

Interesting. Was there a switch-up in TV rights? I don’t follow soccer but wasn’t UEFA on FOX for a while?

CBS has the rights now but have been airing the games on their sports network and their streaming platform (Paramount). Just weird that they are airing a round of 16 match that I’ll honestly say doesn’t do anything for a casual sports fan or an old lady who just finished watching the Young and the Restless.

Although there is a Pitt link! The game pits US National team stars Christian Pulisic from Chelsea vs Tim Weah from Lille. Tim Weah is Jester’s cousin.

LOL....well the latter.
Makes no sense, unless they can go back to UEFA and show them that they are airing matches over the air instead of just of subscription service.

but 25 years ago I didnt even know what Champions League was. It is profound to me that it is creeping further and further into our sports landscape these days.

I just don't get it. How have they marketed this mostly mediocre and often not very interesting sport into this must see TV here in the States. Where we have little stake in the Euro leagues. Really, it has been brilliant. But I am not getting it. It is not that interesting.

Well I’m not sure a 3pm weekday match moves the needle at all. Why would it, right? I think a semi final or a final in prime time or on the weekend would be something a lot of people would watch. When those games happen, you’re talking about two of the best teams in the world playing for the worlds most prestigious professional championship.

like clockwork, you turn into an old crank any time there is a soccer post. you can just not click the thread, you know? i'm not a hockeyor golf fan - i simply don't click on those topics. no one needs to hear me bloviating about why i don't care about it.

LOL......but it is boring. Of course you cannot like hockey, that's fine. Most Americans could care less. But I am talking about this infatuation with these Euro soccer leagues, when we have few players even capable of playing there, no kids under 30 grew up watching Euro soccer on TV and even better, had their fathers take them to games.

It is the great sports marketing coup of this century.

Nah. Owt is alright. And he’s not entirely wrong on this. Of course todays game is a snooze fest for most that won’t draw new viewers. I’ll be watching but my team is playing in it.

Owt follows a sport no one watches and is secure with his sport being a niche. I’m the same way with my security regarding soccer. People can say what they want. I know what I like.

It's often on CBSSN on weekdays, maybe the fact that Chelsea is a popular club and Pulisic is considered the top American, they figure they can get good ratings?

That’s a great thought in theory. But SMF said they aired a different game last week too. They aren’t going to gain additional viewers by doing this. They aren’t even advertising it I don’t think.

But how is it a coup? I’m not sure what their win is here.

the final gets pretty good ratings in the summer and more and more Americans will be watching each year as the sport continues to grow domestically. Under 30’s do watch. When I was under 30 none of us did. I just think it’s tough for the worlds biggest competition to be ignored and not expect it to grow in this country.

It is, part of it is there are no sports in America in the summer, and a lot of the international soccer and MLS is in the summer, so it's filling a niche :) Like I said, America has NO SPORTS that are played in the summer. They have something they used to call "The American Pass Time" but wow! Talk about BORING AS HELL :) American kids can't sit through that slow, boring crap.

I've taken my daughter to a few soccer games. USMNT once, for the Gold Cup. And today, at least where i live, there's probably a dozen kids playing youth soccer for every one playing "American Pass Time".

it's the best players and teams. americans don't like 2nd tier athletes. wimbledon and the french open tennis get great ratings in the US. and he haven't had a good male player in a long time.

also, those clubs are international and glitzy. the top players are known all over the world. kids follow them on social media more for their celebrity than their skills. my 11 yo plays travel soccer and he's got a messi jersey and could care less about watching him. all the boys in his team have different soccer jerseys of european teams. we live close to DC and none of them have a DC united jersey, or any MLS team. the local soccer shop doesn't even sell them.

It's not a great triumph, I just think all they had to do was just televise some of it in the first place. And with more people playing it, more of their kids playing it, there will be more popularity. When I was under 30 I don't think there was any soccer on American TV for years at a time.

Thanks for posting. On the other board, I literally posted about CBS doing the games now but I'm still not programmed to check that so I was going to watch it on Telemundo or whatever Spanish language station is airing it free. Now, I can watch it in the glorious language of English! Normally, I wouldn't watch a Round of 16 match. But Pulisic vs Weah. Sign me up.

Yeah but those ratings are tremendously down from the last 30 years. Hell when I was in college, the US Open Men's Final would be at 4:00 on an NFL Sunday and beat it in ratings.

It's live sports(which advertisers love) that doesn't need to worry about a weekday 3PM Eastern time start hurting the live gate, don't be shocked to see more of this over the next few years. Also, it's likely that CBS affiliates don't have to pick this up so there's going to me markets that will still run their local or syndicated programming in the time slot.

Pulisic is in the starting lineup.

Gotta love the world champions gold badge on the chelsea uniform!!

7 touches? How is that even possible?

Jonathan David starts up top? He doesn't even play that for Canada I don't think? That's Cyle Larin
Entertaining back and forth pace to this game so far. Good stuff.

LOL........I can hear the match being played in the other room. Someone is fixing my kitchen and I told them they can watch what they want and it is on.
