OT: Champions League on CBS Today

I am not bagging on soccer because to each his/her/shim their own. In fact, I religiously watch the USMNT and USWNT when they are on. And also the better World and Euro Cup matches. But that's just it. I have to have a rooting interest to watch soccer. I can watch other sports without it. But that is why I just can't or don't casually watch the EPL.

Shim. Well done.

You can watch soccer like any sport, watch just to watch. But when it’s your team playing, a completely different level. See it in person, and it’s life changing. I’ve been to games all over Europe and several World Cup games. Nothing like it.

I’m in all my glory. Cut my work day short and went to a BJ’s Brewhouse to watch the match. The match was on every tv in the place and I had 2 beer flights and some wings. My team won, the American scored and now it’s time to get ready for Pitt Hoops.

And there you have it. It doesn’t get much better.

This is tremendous. Here’s commentary and video breakdown of Christian Pulisic’s game today. Very high praise from the Euro pundits. Saying he’s got the most quality of any attacking player on world championship team that he plays on is incredible stuff for an American.

It can only help get the U.S. Soccer Federation into UEFA right?
Not sure if you are joking since I've posted this in the past but yes, USSF getting into UEFA would be THE game-changer for US Soccer. MLS's path to Champions League would attract enough superstars to make the league world-class and a mainstream league in the US behind only the NFL and NBA.

Bye Bye Champions League. Espnfc is reporting uefa is dumping Saint Petersburg and Russia.
Good, **** Russia and everything they’re “standing” on with this invasion

And that matters very little to Russia. FIFA should have pulled the 2018 World Cup after its annexation of Crimea......but nope.

I'd like to see East Rutherford make a bid for it. The England or France to Newark flight isn't much longer than to Moscow.

But it's not in EUROPE, I kind of like some things just staying the same, like UEFA being for Europe and CONCACAF for North America and not sending the USA to be a pretend part of Europe, even if it is good for USA.

And the NFL, NBA, NHL, and MLB arent in Europe either but we play there and we should as its great to market those leagues. A CL Final in the US would be insane. Probably 2nd only to the Super Bowl.

Playing games there is one thing, joining their league is something else. The big name Euro soccer teams play here too sometimes.

And I don't think a CL Final in the USA would be anywhere near the Super Bowl, I doubt any new viewers would care just because it's in the USA, the soccer fans that would care when it's played in Europe would probably still be 90% of the viewers, and the Euro fans would hate it, especially if they tried to make it prime time in the USA and after midnight for them.

There has never been a regular season club soccer game played in the US besides between MLS teams (or Concacaf teams), which should be a crime. Its unbelievable we cant get some random regular season Euro games here.

Also, I know it wouldn't be close to the Super Bowl but I was saying it would be the 2nd biggest stand-alone single day event. Probably exaggerating that but it would be big.

If you were paying attention when a couple La Liga teams wanted to play a game in Miami you would know that the leagues in Europe all have rules that say that league games have to be played in the home country.

Of course you do know that, because you were in on the discussions when that all went down, but better to pretend, right?

It was a union issue. La Liga badly wanted it. Either way, it needs to happen. No reason US leagues can play in Europe but they cant play here. Heck, some NFL teams give up 12.5% of their home schedule to play in Europe. We're only asking for 1 out of 20-30 home game.

Why is it a crime, maybe these Euro Leagues don't want a regular season game in the USA, not even for money. And I don't think a random EPL game here is a surefire thing, it would have to be a big game, like Liverpool vs Chelsea or something like that, Jags vs Texans might sell out at Wembley, but I can't see Wolverhampton vs Leeds United selling 70000 tickets at East Rutherford.

And I like soccer a lot, and this CL Final is usually like in June, early Sunday Afternoon, right? And even I don't watch it, or at least not all of it- I'd SERIOUSLY rather watch the Gold Cup, because I have rooting interest with the USMNT-SERIOUSLY. The American viewers who watch it, will still watch it, but I seriously don't think average Americans, who don't watch it will suddenly say, "Wow it's in NY, so now I care", I think they still won't watch it. Or care at all.

It would have to be 1 big team. Wolves vs Leeds would draw 30K. Liverpool vs Leeds draws 80K

Yeah you’re exaggerating. It would be like the Daytona 500, which is a big deal for fans of the sport, but might as well not even exist for everyone else.

Spanish football played Cup games in the Middle East. So cup games in the US would be possible for a price. I think it was a lucrative multi year deal that Spanish football signed. I could be wrong though as I don’t pay much attention to it.

LOL......but it is boring. Of course you cannot like hockey, that's fine. Most Americans could care less. But I am talking about this infatuation with these Euro soccer leagues, when we have few players even capable of playing there, no kids under 30 grew up watching Euro soccer on TV and even better, had their fathers take them to games.

It is the great sports marketing coup of this century.
Actually both my Gen Z sons and their friends watch EPL soccer and it's pretty popular with that age group

Soccer has the same problem as baseball in this country, as the inner cities aren’t producing soccer interest. Rural communities probably aren’t much into the sport either. I’m guessing you live in the burbs. I am too, and soccer is right there with the other sports with the kids, and probably ahead of baseball.

If Pittsburgh didn't have the Pens and their fans weren't in an insular bubble, they would recognize that it's not that popular.

True, you'd need one of the Euro teams American soccer snobs are obsessed with, Liverpool, Chelsea, Man City, Barca... one of the teams that has local fan clubs, like I know of clubs in my area that exist for Liverpool and Chelsea, I of course would be first in line for tickets if they got Olympiacos vs. AEK :).
