I know, there's a name we haven't heard in awhile. I was reading Jonathan Ogden's Player's Tribune piece today and he mentioned the former football player Gilbert Brown.

It made me think of the former Panther, who was pretty fun to watch for a few great years in Pitt basketball history. I looked him up, and in case you're wondering what he's been up to, he's played for ten teams in eight different countries (counting Puerto Rico) since leaving Pitt.

2011 s.Oliver Baskets (Germany)
2011–2012 Fort Wayne Mad Ants (D-League)
2012 Sameji (Dominican Republic)
2012 Caciques de Humacao (Puerto Rico)
2012–2013 Bandırma Kırmızı (Turkey)
2013 Bucaneros de La Guaira (Venezuela)
2013 Caciques de Humacao (Puerto Rico)
2013–2014 Canton Charge (D-League)
2014–2015 Pistoia Basket 2000
2015–present Ironi Naharyia

Sounds like kind of a taxing road, but at least he's making money playing ball!

I hate to say it, but he's making peanuts, almost definitely less than the average Pitt grad in his class year. Those are not good leagues at all.

The team he's on now plays in a gym that seats 2000.

yeah but he has seen many parts of the world for someone still in his 20's. Don't feel bad for him at all, his job is to play basketball. I always like Brown.

He may not be making much, but he is still getting paid to play a game. That's pretty cool.

they give those guys free room & board and fly them home a few times per year. they don't make much money but they aren't losing it either. beats working in some crummy office.

Yea, and he'll wake up at thirty -five with no job and no future and 10 grand in his savings account. Just wonderful, playing hoops in the lower Slobovian league. Pitt has placed quite a few guys in this league.
