OT Greatest college QB of all time

Really? I don't remember this story? What happened? He was from Youngstown I think? So why didn't he go to tOSU maybe? Or Pitt?
Earl Bruce was scared of Kosar's mechanics. It turned away a lot of coaches in the rust belt area but the warm weather schools like UCLA, Florida and Miami recruited Bernie because he was fantastic at Boardman.

I graduated from Boardman 10 years after Kosar did and every day I walked into the school I saw his plaque with his passing yards stats of 2,222. He would have had way more but his junior year there was a teachers' strike and the Spartans played few games.

It wasn't until the last 10 years that I did some digging and found out how Kosar very much wanted to go to Pitt. He loved Marino, wanted to succeed him, and wanted to stay close to his family so they could see him play.

I found a Chicago-Sun Times article online from 1984 the week Pitt was playing Miami and it went in-depth on how Kosar wanted to go to Pitt. Foge urged Jackie to recruit Kosar but Sherrill refused after what recruits said above: he allotted his two QB scholarships elsewhere. A terrible parting gift from Jackie as I was never a Congemi guy. Small, brittle and a mediocre passer.

Pitt stays as a 9-2 program with Kosar IMO. A little side note, when Boardman coaches knew what it had in Kosar they went down to U of Cincinnati and studied Mike Gottfried's passing offense and implemented it at Boardman.

Archie Manning took Ole Miss to "new heights" in terms of national visibility . before Archie , nobody outside of Miss and th eSEC knew who they were or where they were. Archie single handedly changed that. Note: where is the "multiple national champinbships " coming from?
1959 9-1 #2 going into bowls then a 21-0 win over #3 LSU in the Sugar Bowl.

1960 9-0-1 #2 going into bowls then a 14-6 win over Rice in Sugar Bowl. #1 Minnesota somehow lost it's 2nd game in the bowl but gained first place votes as an 8-2 AP champ. This is their only championship recognized by the NCAA.

1962 9-0 #3 going into bowls and beat #6 Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl.

I don't know if any of the major contemporary selectors picked Ole Miss as National Championship, but a lot of retroactives have including Dunkel, Billingsly, and Sagarin. These "National Championships" are just as valid (many more so) and claimed in the same manner as the vast majority of Pitt's "National Championships".

Archie had the best game of his entire career in the 1st nationally televised game and continued to get overrated for the rest of his college and NFL career. He never won a conference championship, national championship, or Heisman. He never lead the SEC (let alone the NCAA) in any passer category.

Sonny Sixkiller. Not really, but I loved the name. Sounds like someone you could count on to overthrow a wide open receiver in the end zone on 3rd down.

It's a pretty bold statement to say his 4th place finish was "new heights" when they had multiple claimed national championships in the decade before he arrived.
I’m not sure who thought they were national champions other than a few drunks at a bar in Oxford. They never have won a national championship. The closest they ever came was in 1959, when they were undefeated going into the LSU game. But, Billy Cannon returned a punt for a TD and they lost 7-0.

Not saying i agree with them, but they have as much of a claim to those 3 as Pitt does to their claimed 1936 National Championship, if not 4-5 of the claims before 1936 as well.

I was just saying its absurd to say that Manning took them to new heights when his teams never placed higher than 4th in the SEC, when they had far more success 7-8 years before he got there.

Ahh, Tommy Frazier! Nothing could stop Huskers football; until the "curse of Peterson"!

I would think USC would have to be up there with Carson Palmer, Matt Leinert, Matt Bradley, Mark Sanchez, Cody Kessler and Sam D’Arnold. Four first round draft choices, a 3rd rounder and a 4th rounder.

Josh David Booty as well.

SIAP - with so many QB’s already mentioned, I don’t know if anyone has mentioned Roger Staubach yet, but I will. And playing for Navy, he wasn’t surrounded by 4-5 star athletes - which makes his success even more impressive.

Tom Brady arguably the greatest human to ever play football might not make a top 50 all time college QB list.
Brady definitely would not be on this list. He wasn't even the full-time QB at Michigan. He had to share the position with Drew Henson. I like to remind a friend of mine, who is a real Michigan homer, that the UM coaches weren't smart enough to make the GOAT as a pro the full time starter in college.

The athletes at the academies in 1962, in comparison to the competition, were closer to Davis/Blanchard caliber than they were to the present day.

that reporter turned out to be a racist. matt made the right decision.

as for this thread, lots of recency bias.

i'm not having tebow at all. he was a running back who occassionally threw the ball. tommy frazier was criminally underrated.

but the true answer is kenny pickett.

Fun fact, Tebow has more passing yards and passing TDs than Dan Marino, with only 1/4th the interceptions. But yeah, definitely just a running back.

every QB in urban meyers' offenses puts up the same passing stats. alex smith, haskins, etc etc. i'm not impressed. he was a running back.

Brady was clearly the better QB but Lloyd Carr forced in Henson out of fear of losing him to the Yankees, which ended up happening a few years later.

But there was a dramatic difference in Brady's development in just one year's time, from his senior year in college to his rookie year in the pros. Coming out of college, he was good enough to only be a sixth round draft choice. But he was quickly able to take over first string as a rookie and to lead the Pats to the Super Bowl Championship. Big difference.

That time seemed to be when recruiting rankings were really starting to take off. It’s not like it is today, but people knew that Henson was the number 1 QB recruit in the country. He was a “franchise” QB. And I think coaches struggled with what to do with these guys that were just not a name on a roster to the public.

Mack Brown had the same issue with Chris Simms and Major Applewhite during that time. And it played out much the same way.

I'm not sure Brady was clearly the consensus better QB when those 2 were competing especially early on.

Brady was a late bloomer and continued to improve even 10 years into the NFL.

Oklahoma right?
Josh Heupel, Jason White (Heisman), Rhett Bomar, Sam Bradford #1 overall, Landry Jones, Baker Mayfield (Heisman/#1 overall), Kyler Murray (Heisman/#1 overall), Jalen Hurts, Spencer Rattler and Caleb Williams.

Yeah, the heir apparent to Marino was supposed to be Rich Bowen from Serra. Also in that class was Chris Jelic (who I think his Dad was a big booster or something) and John Congemi. Plus even though my memory is foggy I believe at the time it was a small class, maybe only 16-18 spots available.

So kind of a numbers game but technically Foge took over and may have had time to recruit/sign Kosar if he really wanted, even with the Bowen commit. But I agree for all the greatness of Sherrill that was one time his fastball was off.
