OT. Holy cripes.

Simple. You have to train with and play against the best. You can’t do that in North American soccer. But you can in all the other sports. You can look no further than Pulisic. He is who he is because he played in europe at a young age. No other Americans can do that by rule. He could because of his citizenship/passport situation from his Dad being a Euro.
BS. You can't find 12 guys in say a 6-8 year period that have top level talent? I mean, it's not that hard.

Yeah. It is way overcoached like most sports. That is what is killing baseball. But also sure, none of this is more important than when we were younger and had less responsibilities.

I don't think the NHL is quite as bad as it was in the late 90's, early 2000's, I do think there is some more flow again. I also think I mean, let's face it as Pens fans, we have seen 5 championships in 30 years. And most years have one if not 2 of the best players in the world. It does lead to complacency and a rather "ho hum" attitude. Then I try to remind myself is this is temporary, and it may never be this good again. I mean look at Flyers, Canucks, Sabres, Leafs and Blues fans up until this year.

I do like hockey, will watch the international games (not just Olympics) love the World Jr's and even college playoffs. I just like the sport. But yeah, I moved away from it too for a few years when it became just a clutch and grab fest.

What I would give for just one more Cup. It is funny why I want that one more. I mean right now, it is pretty easy to say the Pens (and I guess Edmonton but their's came all in one run) are the most successful NHL post expansion team (which I love to hold over Flyers fans heads) but getting that 6th Cup, you know what it does right? It ties them with the beloved and vaunted Steelers, and I know that would upset some in this city.

We are so in alignment on this topic. What would you give to go back to the officiating Sid had for his rookie season?

No. Because they are always going to be playing against players and teams that play with and against elite players their entire soccer playing careers.

Case in point. Take the 11 best athletes in western PA. Put them on a PA West club team playing all other club teams in a western PA schedule and let them play in that league from U12 through U18.

Then take 11 random athletes and put them at a Beadling SC from U12-U18, playing in the top regional and national leagues against the best teams and best players.

Which 11 will develop into elite players?

When the kids are young, you can hide little Johnny at forward or on the wing. You just know that you’re at a disadvantage because you’ll never get production there or score a goal. But you can’t put him on the backline or in the middle of the pitch. It will kill your team. That said, it’s not about wins and losses at the young ages ;). But you also don’t want your team losing 5-0. Which is what would happen if you put little Johnny at midfield or in the back.

Yea, I put the worst kids at forward, knowing they will never score or even touch the ball. Its playing a man down which you can do for spurts but it's way more of a disadvantage in soccer then that same kid playing baseball batting 9th. My advice to parents of kids who arent athletic or into sports: play baseball. You just stand there all game and you really cant hurt the team much. You might even walk 3-4 times and score runs.

And yet, Beadling will send maybe 1-2 Males per year to D1. There is some truth to what you are saying but if I had to pick 3 things wrong with American men's soccer

1. You are still losing too many kids to the Big 3 sports

2. Even the kids that want to stick with soccer cant afford the "pay for play" system to play for the Beadling.

3. Kids dont play pickup in their free time like they do in Mexico, Europe, South America, and Africa.

You mean like how there's a general belief that the football players in FL are better because there is more good competition in FL?

You’re right with your points. Men’s soccer is a little more complex, and I am about to meet my wife for dinner so I’m not going to get too deep into it right now. But my main point is you have to train and play against the best at a young age and do it for a long period of time in soccer if you want to be good. Americans are not afforded that opportunity living here.

You are putting way too much emphasis on 1 game.

And like I said, you seem to have no idea how difficult it is to beat a team 6-0. Mexico is better than the US. Martinique is equal to or worse than Trinidad. Mexico won last night, 3-2. Because it's hard to completely clobber someone, even if you are a lot better than them.

It's exactly the same reason why I said that when the US beat Thailand 13-0 that anything over seven was superfluous. Because even when one team is a lot better than the other, like, say, the Swedish women over Thailand, they still don't win by anything even coming close to 13-0. There have been approximately 350 FIFA sanctioned (men's) games since the beginning of March. The number of times a team beat someone worse than 6-0 is five, and two of them just happened against the Cuban team in the Gold Cup that had at least four starters defect during the tournament.
