Baseball is boring, that's what makes it a good summertime sport. I personally don't like the way Greg Brown acts like a win in April is the 7th game of the world series.
so some fans hate when an announcer is not excited enough, others hate it when they are too excited, lol, I think you guys just like to complain and cant pick a side so you play both sides here..
What’s Lanny up to these days? He is the most interesting broadcaster ever in this city from the standpoint that I’ve never seen a guy who held a job for 35 years fail to connect with the fan base in any way.

John has grown on me over the last few years I got so tired of the Pittsburgh media keep mentioning Pittsburgh own when John was playing I got turned off. Overall I think the pirates broadcasters do a good job. I love baseball so I watch a lot of the MLB Network and hear other announcers.

Best pure announcer the Pirates ever had was Milo Hamilton but I think the yinzers didnt give him a chance.....

Scan through opposing teams' home market broadcasts on SiriusXM and you will quickly realize how good the Pirates really have it.
He teaches communications courses at Waynesburg and does freelance work. I heard him at a conference about 5 years ago, not long after he was fired. I always thought he was awful. Then I had a chance to sit and chat with him for over an hour about a bunch of different topics. He was one of the most genuinely nice and good people that I've ever met. I felt awful about hating on him for all those years.
Broadcasted for the disasterous and pathetic Bucs for a couple decades ; lost a couple marriages and it nearly wrecked him.
Heard him on an interview last year and yeah, sounds well and doing well...sounded like a couple good things going on there.
Honestly, I am amazed at how little he knows about baseball for playing it so long. I think he just is not the brightest guy. Total yinzer and they hired him for that reason. I love Bob Walk and Greg Brown together, they constantly crack me up.
He went to IU and was majoring in Mathematics.

I wouldn't say he's dumb, but he does a poor job of getting his points across. And he almost always sounds like he's half asleep. That's kind of a bad combination for a sports color commentator.
He was also a very good hitting coach in the Pirates minor leagues prior to getting the broadcast gig. He is very knowledgeable... his communication skills are never going to be great, but he has gotten much better.
Lanny grew on me pretty quickly and I liked him pretty much his third year, he was good at describing the game, and had good historical knowledge, IMO, and did not try to make some minor point into a three inning over hyped matter. One thing is I do not believe he was fired, but he stepped down because he was burnt out by trying to help generate interest in a lousy product. Anybody recall it that way?
I'm still holding out hope that he will one day become the voice of Pitt sports.
Publicly he stepped down, but the truth is Lanny was fired. The new regime of Coonelly and Huntington wanted him out.

no, the Nuttings prefer the message to be Pravda like.....Lanny went off script and dared to criticize the organization. Listen to a broadcast now.....Greg Browne is a happy cheerleader. I don't think I've ever heard much strategy or criticism discussed between him & Walk. But they sure like to laugh and talk about the Pirates & fans having a good time at the ol ballyard!
Well, that is hardly genius. Did he graduate? At any rate he doesn’t seem to know any of the rules, he constantly gets them wrong, he doesn’t talk well, and he isn’t quick enough to quip.
Not saying he is dumb, but certainly not intelligent either. At any rate he is the worst of the group of announcers by far.
I have no inside info, but don't recall any credible rumblings of him being fired. The published stories were that it came as a bit of surprise to Coonley when he presented his retirement decision and they almost immediately announced plans for an on-field ceremony the following season to celebrate and honor his career. He was 60 years old at the time and reflected that he missed a lot of family and personal time, as he had been on the road doing Pirates announcing the gig for 33 years. His media statement was that he was too emotional for a formal press conference, which I can see how could lead to fan speculation of a firing. He stated that decided in the final weeks of the season while on the road, that he had enough and it was time to check out. If there were pressure from the Pirates, it wasn't publicly apparent.
I think if he didn't play for Pirates or was from Pittsburgh, this would be a lot different discussion. I agree with the other guy, I cringe when I hear he is announcing.

I can care less about the voice. Being bland, having no humor, not knowing the rules, that matters. Groat and Myron are/were incredibly smart, Wehner couldnt hold their jocks. Being smart is a comparative study Id think. Perhaps if you think he is smart, then he is to you. But, he certainly doesn't show that intelligence on TV or radio, and I listen or watch about 80% of all Bucco games.
Blass is old now, that is all. Blass is/was far better than Wehner. Its a dumb argument though. Touch Ilken (sp?) was a moron too, but that didn't stop him from being on the air a long time. Frankly the color guy needs to be a bit flaky (ala Walk, who is witty and quick), it adds character.
