OT: Leicester city wins premiere league title

The appropriate comparison for Leicester winning the Premiere League would be Jamie Dixon getting to the Final Four.

Zing!

I hear you there. It is tough not having a fixed team to follow. If Pittsburgh had an mls team I would be there on a regular basis.
Hey, I even go to 2-3 Baltimore Blast games every year, indoor soccer, not the real thing, but it is nice to actually go to an event sometimes. We've only gone to one DC United game in person, but it was great. They have maybe 15,000 fans but a great tailgate culture, and when we wnt, we saw them beat LA and Beckham, so it was pretty cool to see.

let me guess, a 1-1 tie...

The DC/LA game? It was 1-0 DC. Once you "really get" soccer, you realize that lots of scoring doesn't make the game better. And I actually am not bothered by ties anymore either. Sometimes games are so good you hate to see either side lose.

Agreed.

I love the drama of it, and how teams have to tactically break down another team's defense. Even if scores are 1-0, you know that at any point a team can counter and have a break to score.

I used to loathe the sport, called it boring, etc. then I watched it and realized that it is the opposite of everything I thought it was.

Oh, and no commercials. Love that's the 2 hours of commercials has killed the NFL for me.

I had to opportunity to watch the playoffs when I was on a 10 day business trip to the UK. I was in Birmingham and Manchester.
Its really great to watch the sport in a pub with their fans. Most local fans were very happy to discuss/explain strategy for a pint. I also watched cricket when the football wasn't on and I didn't take to that sport like I did to Euro football.

The thing about soccer, some of the "close calls" or "almost scores" are so exciting, that you jump to your feet. And some of these ties, feel like wins, if you don't score all game, and you're down 1-0 for 60 minutes, then with a minute left, you stick one in, 1-1 feels like a win and you're celebrating like you won the Super Bowl, and if you're on the other side of that you feel like you lost.

I admit, I got most of my love of watching soccer because my daughter's been playing the last 7 years, never watched it much before, but once I started to really watch, I realized I love it. The no stoppages, the minimal rules, no whistles every 2 minutes to review something on a video screen. I usually watch TV games on a 5 minute DVR delay, so I can stop it to go to the bathroom, lol.

Never really played, but I did play some rec league goal keeper as an adult in Pittsburgh so I can relate a little more than I can to hockey, since I never skated. So one thing I will say, I laugh at the typical American "tough guys" who call it a fag sport, it's harder and tougher than they think. It's entertaining too, once you understand how to watch it and what it's really about.

I am not a soccer hater. In fact, it is okay if they use the men's bathroom. I support equal rights for all.
Funny how a-holes hate soccer, but you probably love the worst sport in the world, BASEBALL, the piece of crap sport where up to 17 of the 20 players in the game at any time may be doing NOTHING or just scratching their nut sack, Most boring snoozefest sport ever invented! I think I used to like it just because I was born in America, then one day I just had awakening? WHY AM I WATCHING THIS GARBAGE, and never looked back.

Yea I am sure you don't watch baseball...

Sure, sure

I don't, there have been seasons that I haven't watched an entire at bat the whole year. This year so far I haven't. I grew up with the Pirates, so as they've become good again, I might watch 1-2 games, or parts of a few others, an inning or 2, in the regular season and their playoff games. And living in Baltimore, I might go to Camden Yards once or twice in a year to hang out with people and drink beer. It just doesn't hold my attention. And the game has gotten more boring with the "moneyball" theories, like wait for walks, don't try to steal basis, play super conservative, take a lot of pitches, just can't deal with it. Spring and summer if I want to watch sports outside NHL or NBA playoffs, I'll watch arena football and soccer like 20-30 times vs. an inning or 2 of baseball once or twice.

So....if you hate soccer, that makes you an "ahole"? Really. That is the equivalence? Like Soccer? Good person. Hate Soccer? Ahole. I guarantee you this, more members of ISIS and Al Queda like soccer. You like soccer, you support the terrorists.

God Bless America!! Soccer is for terrorists!!!

Good, if it is true that Al Queda and ISIS prefer soccer to baseball, then that's one part of their ideology that is spot on correct, and I support them on that issue 110%. Liking baseball, makes America "exceptional", exceptionally stupid. Maybe only curling is a more boring sport, both have brooms involved.

Yet it's ok for you to discuss the nhl?

Hypocrite.

You're that guy that wants to pick a fight because someone called it a soccer field and not a "pitch", aren't you? Take it easy. One thing I've noticed about soccer is that people get pretty uptight about it pretty quick.

I was just surprised at how many guys on here know so much about it. Forgive my little snipe there but give it a rest.

If people dont like soccer because they say its boring, that is fine. I just pray these people also dont watch baseball, golf, and nascar for their "excitement." I was at a Pirate game this week and it was the worst thing I ever watched. I was sitting there thinking how can people watch this garbage. Its horrible. Soccer doesn't have much scoring, I get that but its continuous play with no timeouts or stoppages.

It's not that people don't like soccer. It's that some can't shut up about not liking it. And oddly enough they are always NASCAR, baseball or golf fans.
And then there's the internet tough guys like upj who calls soccer fans fags lol. I'm sure he's in the octagon as we speak.

The thing about soccer is that in some it elicits a flag waving, "God Bless America" response, you know, these "exceptional" Americans want to hate it because it's perceived as a foreign sport and they have a hard on to believe that anything "American" is better... then you watch 2 minutes of any baseball game and realize it isn't, because there's nothing in the world more boring than a baseball game, I'd rather watch "Dancing with the Stars" or "The Kardashians" than any baseball game, it is that boring of a spectacle. Some of these people might even like soccer, but they're ashamed to admit it, because they don't want to be seen as un-American.

No, you were trying to be an a$$.

I HATE hockey, yet you don't see me making stupid comments in all the nhl threads.

What I find funny is how Americans are so snippy that soccer is becoming popular here, and especially when it comes to hockey has surpassed some sports.

The funny thing is, I like soccer, basketball, nascar, golf, baseball, football, and basketball. I can enjoy each sport for what it is. Even hockey, I enjoy the college games that I have attended at the consol.

I enjoy each sport for what it is. Not sure why some people seem so threatened by soccer.

But you are bringing your personal likes and dislikes into the equation. I like baseball, especially the art and science of pitching. It is great to watch pitchers set up hitters and vice versa. I hate NASCAR, don't find one redeeming quality in it, except on those NASCAR weekends a great place to drop a bomb, but who am I to tell people what they should or should not like.

And hockey is my favorite sport. To be honest, I don't care if it is 4th or 5th or 6th or whatever amongst pro sports in this country. It is my favorite sport, and I happen to live in a town where hockey is mainstream and a bigger player than most other sports. If you don't like it, so what. That's my offering to soccer fans who try to convince then denigrate those who don't think it is all that. Here's another thing, dreck like Dancing With the Stars, American Idol and crap like that get the best ratings. Does that really mean they are the best shows? No. Same applies to sports. So like what you like.

One other thing.....it is noted that 87% of vegans are soccer fans.

Colin Cowherd made a great point a few years ago when he said Republicans hate soccer. I never thought of it that way but after thinking about it and thinking about people I know, he's pretty much right.

Soccer is scary to 'mericans. Its new. Its hip. Its....foreign (the horror!). True conservatives like things the way they were. No changes. Ever. And old people especially hate soccer. Most old people also hate hockey for similar reasons.

It really comes down to political alliances really. Republicans view America as a White Fantasyland where we can watch baseball, go golfing, drive pick-up trucks, and listen to country music. Soccer is a threat to that. Soccer is a foreign sport played mostly by foreigners (even on MLS teams) that is adored by foreigners, especially Mexicans and illegal immigrants and that is too much for these 'mericans to handle.

Holy drama Batman. I think the true despise of soccer comes from the youth programs where "everyone gets a trophy" mentality, moreso than some xenophobic outrage. You are right, I forget who (Conservative talking head) made fun of soccer, but I think it is more along those lines.

But hockey is cooler and hipper than soccer. There. I said it. I went there. I can't help it you are too stupid to follow it.

That's all fine and good. I like hockey too, Only a Pens fans and don't watch other games, but yeah, I like hockey. But I see people going out of their way to express hatred to soccer, like a pro-American badge of honor. I'm not telling anyone to like soccer, just be indifferent to it. That's why I rip baseball so bad, I HATE IT THAT BAD, I'm not telling anyone else to like soccer or hate baseball, I just do that because of the anti-soccer BS. If I see a baseball thread, I don't go there and rip baseball, but when there is a soccer thread, there are always a few people who come there to call soccer players fags, question why we are discussing it, say soccer fans are vegans or whatever and proceed to call it boring and un-American. Nobody is telling you to like it, but there is no need to question others as to why they like it or rip people for liking it.

You're very uninformed. Yes at the younger ages, it is like that, like it is in T-ball or little league too, but as you get older and get on tryout based teams, the games are cut-throat, kill the opponent, play to win affairs. Like my daughter who plays select club league and JV & high school soccer, Nobody is being nice, they are playing to win and make the losers cry and made to feel as losers and only winners get awards. So that whole characterization is Rush Limbaugh style BS.

Almost every youth sport is like that now.

Agreed, the younger age groups give everyone a trophy and play for fun, as you get 10-12 and older and reach the higher levels and tryout and travel teams, then you compete. And I can attest from first hand witnessing of it, They play to win with no remorse for the LOSERS feelings.

And honestly, I am fine with that. There is nothing wrong with playing for fun when you are 9 years old.

I am not. I am just reporting what that Conservative faction's poking fun at soccer was. I wasn't advocating it one way or another. I am not a soccer hater.

Well, you've only commented 139 times on the Lair (and a full 1/10th of those are in this thread) so to be honest, you don't really post much about football either.

But hockey is cooler and hipper than soccer. There. I said it. I went there. I can't help it you are too stupid to follow it.

Nobody likes hockey except for people in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Buffalo, Massachusetts, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. It has niche followings in Chi, NY, and DC but there are such huge populations in those cities that the niche following has big enough numbers.

Hockey is niche sport which has a mainstream following in a very small portion of the US. If Manchester United moved to Pittsburgh and played at HF, there would be 68K people there every week and all the girls would be drooling over the white players just as they do over the Pens.
