OT McCutchen placed on revocable waivers...

They needed to trade him after the 2015 season to be "right". They waited too long and got diminished value for him. That said, Crick looks like a dominate reliever.

Good luck getting any one of the Nutting haters to admit Nutting was right.
That would mean they were wrong.
Cutch has a slow bat. He needs to drop two ounces from his bat weight.
Great guy and wealthy.
I think the team that picks him up will insist he make changes.

still can be above avg player, but contract is up. Worse than him is Melancon contract.

Don't think he was ever an above average defensive player, often threw to the wrong base and has trouble going back on deep fly balls. His speed and his bat made him look better than he is or was. Should have been traded several years ago. I would seriously consider trading marte also, a lot of baseball talent, but, for the last couple of years, he just looks like he has other things to do and he could care less if he was there, his lone at bat last night, he didn't run that hard like what got him sat down from starting.

Just about every MLB player not on a contender is on revocable waivers right now with the trade deadline being ten days away. That’s how Houston was able to trade for Justin Verlander last year.
Exactly correct. This only indicates that they are open to trading him to a contender at the Aug 31 deadline, along with countless other MLB veterans that are being placed through the same revocable waiver process. He's not getting cut and will be playing for either a playoff contender or the Giants for the remainder of the 2018 season.

The Pirates were absolutely right in moving Cutch. He wasn’t worth what he was making and wasn’t going to be worth what he would have sought for a new contract. Period. If his name was Joe Smith nobody would have noticed.

great. big deal. not worth the money he is making at this point.
Actually, he is right around market for non-arbitration eligible veterans at his current production level. His salary ranks #70 in MLB, cheaper than teammates Brandon Belt and Brandon Crawford and near par with with guys like Danny Duffy, Nelson Cruz, and Elvis Andrus.

He wasn't right. The Pirates were wrong by waiting too long. If they weren't going to try to win after 2015, they should have traded Cutch right then and there where he had value. Trading him this past offseason was a no brainer.

They gave him away for a relief pitcher and a suspect. They got a better relief pitcher at the trade deadline for two suspects.

Daniel Murphy traded to Cubs after being claimed off revocable waivers.

Someone else claimed Bryce Harper from revocable waivers.

The Bucs traded 1 year of Cutch for 6 years of Crick and a prospect... err, 'a suspect' as you call it. While Crick and Reynolds have performed well so far, and Dickerson later fell into their laps as an overall OF upgrade for the team, it was known that a 2017-18 trade of Cutch would bring minimal return. That is why some fans argued to just keep Cutch and let him walk as a FA at season's end. 2015-16 was the window to move him for a more sizable haul.

Kela comes with 3 years of MLB control for those 2 'suspects', so it's not really a fair trade comparison.

The Pirates, like virtually all teams, will operate on a budget. Whether you think it should be higher than it is, is beside the point. To spend money in one area means you can't spend it elsewhere.
So, dumping a $15M contract, replacing it with a $5M contract that is an upgrade, is an excellent switch. The prospects that came with it are a bonus. And Crick is an excellent addition. Time will tell with the others.
