OT: Mylan defending EPI-Pen 400% price increase.....

Look at the Mylan patent portfolio [or the portion that is presently public record], they were not all acquired. By legal definition, you are not entitled to a patent unless, among other things, the invention is novel. Sorry, but you will have to admit defeat here. Hail to Pitt!

A patent portfolio has little bearing on actually developing a novel therapeutic the entire way from IND to an approved NDA. Patents are cheap and don't require a fully developed and approved marketing application. You certainly don't have to scientifically prove safety and effectiveness. And if they were always awarded correctly, there be a lot less use for people employed in your field.

Combining One Drug with another does not count.

Actually, I believe if it is a new combination, it would count a novel product in regulations (requiring an NDA). But it doesn't appear that Mylan has any of those which it developed by itself either.

Well if you don't know you are allergic, why would you likely be carrying an Epi-Pen? Does not make sense.

They can be used in asthma attacks on pt's lacking the strength/coordination/dexterity/consciousness/etc necessary for a rescue inhaler.

I get it, I just do not find Mylan's pricing to be as outrageous as many do. Hail to Pitt!

Amedra who makes an alternative has to love this scandal.

Mylan will suffer the consequences of what appears to be price gouging if it opens the door to competitors and mars its reputation. That's the free market though. It doesn't come without consequences.

The way the GOVERMENT screwed up is by not regulating the pharmaceutical industry more, like every other country in the world does. That's why the same drugs cost so much more here than in every other country.
To be truthful the republicans are responsible for the govt not being permitted to negotiate prices with the drug companies. Both houses are controlled by Republicans and they would not pass law which permitted Medicare to negotiate prices.

Of course you won't be carrying a pen if you don't know you're allergic. I wasn't as articulate as I needed to be but that was more directed towards your statement of not being tested and how it's irresponsible. The onset of symptoms can be quite sudden and very few if any people are going to be regularly tested for allergies, especially into adulthood. Unfortunately quite a few people don't know until their throat starts closing suddenly or some other less severe reaction takes place.

And even if you know what you are allergic to, the allergens are not always avoidable. This is particularly true of food allergies.

I agree with you, but you are never going to convince the people who believe that capitalism and free markets are a bad thing.
