Where do you find your new music these days?

I came of age in the 70s and 80s and Pittsburgh still had great, independent programming at radio stations. DVE and YDD were awesome then and you did get a chance to hear new music because the DJs helped you discover artists. Then corporate took over play lists and that all ended.

WXDX was a nice alternative in the beginning but they rarely play anything new.

Discovered a alt station in Phoenix called Alt AZ that finds newer artists but if I haven’t listened in a while and then go back they are still playing stuff that is a couple of years old as new.

I have Sirius but haven’t discovered anything that really caters to new stuff that is perhaps broader than a niche category.

i feel currently that social media experts are trying to feed us the next big thing without that thing having any real talent.

I don’t dislike Beyoncé but do I really think all of her Grammys were earned on talent alone and not on popularity.

So just curious if folks have sources for new music. I always love rock and alternative first but do enjoy R&B, Rap and other genres as well. Not Bluegrass though. Lol.

I used to find new music on BBC 6Music and the XM indie station. But that was eons ago. I’m sure BBC6 is still good. Always enjoyed their presenters and the fact that there were less commercials as well.

My musical tastes have reverted to only listening to things out during or before I was in HS (90s). It seems I’ve completely gave up on new music after I hit 40.

Good question. I've recently gotten away from listening to Sirius music stations much. My tastes are more with classic rock, so I do listen to the Classic Rewind and Classic Vinyl Sirius stations. I have a huge vinyl collection at home with a high powered sound system and state-of-the-art turntable. So I find myself listening to that more than anything. The sound is concert quality. I've never listened to Beyonce or whatever her name is, so I can't comment on that genre. Same with hip hop. And for relaxation, I listen to classical, mostly violin concertos and some good Tchaikovsky, Vivaldi, or Mozart.

I mean "new" to me is probably not that new. Really discovered the Yeah Yeah Yeahs but they have been around for years. But they are really good and I love their newest song. Mostly I find on Sirius channel 35 and 36.

I couldn't tell you the last time I've listened to local (PGH.) radio or even sirius ..

Sirius has tons of new music channels
If you can’t find them you aren’t trying

Music festivals?
This is the original way
Opening acts

We saw Walk The Moon at Cat’s Cradle because they opened for Fitz and the Tantrums - who we actually went to see and left as fans

It’s how I found The Interruptors as well .

A festival is how I found ****ed Up and Lucero

One way find new (or at least new to me) music is to find a song I like on Spotify and let it play songs afterwards that are based off of that song. Their algorithm has gotten much better over the last decade and I find a lot of new music that way.
Or even just YouTube and open suggestions

Yeah, that's how I do it. Although most of the "new" stuff I find is 40 years old; it's just new to me. Or I'll come across songs I had forgotten about.

Just search for any song you like and then select "Go to Song Radio," and you're gold.

Sirius channel 28 (sometimes for newish rock stuff). Otherwise Spotify, which will use an algorithm over time to introduce new stuff with your preferred tastes. Also word of mouth from spouse and friends. As for some newer stuff, Bleachers and Matt Maeson have some pretty good cover to cover stuff.

Pandora is really cool because it gives me music that is like the artists I already enjoy. I also build playlists on my YouTube. I haven’t listened to an actual radio station in years.

Mostly what others have said here.

1) Sirius, I spent a lot of time on Alt Nation. SiriusXMU, and the Spectrum.
2) Use the algorithms. Spotify, Youtube, and Apple Music will all recommend stuff based on what you like or listen to. Make sure you "save" the songs so that the app better learns what you like.
3) Reddit has two decent sub-Reddits: r/listentothis and r/indieheads that have new and interesting music.

I'm way past my prime. I used to spend a lot of time on music blogs finding new stuff and now I barely know anything.

As far as new acts that I've found recently, I've liked this band called Wet Leg for about 3 years and they just won a Grammy. Fun, upbeat, rock. I think they're very catchy and accessible.

Alt-J, Nathaniel Rateliff, Stand of Oaks, and Sam Fender are all stuff I've heard and liked in the last 2 years. Just a few songs here or there so start with their more popular tracks and then work deeper.

Great post. I have the same issue. It's not so much that I don't know where to find it, but I don't want to put in the investment to find out what I really like. As others have mentioned, it also depends on your definition of "new." Some people really like being able to discover obscure bands -- it's almost like they aren't interested if anyone else is listening to them. That's not me.

That said, I think WYEP does a decent job of curating their playlists. Not the edgiest stuff, but not the same songs that DVE has been playing for the past 50 years. They frequently put out lists (album of the year, best new artist, etc.) and do countdowns that provide a nice cheat sheet of what's popular with their listeners.

Somebody also mentioned The Spectrum (28) on SiriusXM. They have a nice mix of new and old to expand your range a bit. Two more suggestions:

1. Austin City Limits, which is, of course, a concert format PBS show. Growing up, I assumed that it was country music, coming from Texas. It's actually quite eclectic and good.

2. The NPR Tiny Desk Concert Series: https://www.npr.org/series/tiny-desk-concerts/

Again, these are all pretty established artists, but many are "new to me."

I used to wonder why old people listened to old music. I can now appreciate that my grandfather's music had something more to offer than I realized as a kid. I also appreciate that there is a ton of really good new music. I continually gravitate back to classic rock like a comfort food, but there's a lot to be gained by finding the new stuff.

Ghost is a current rock group I just found lately, actually my daughter introduced me to one of their songs, she thought I would like it. They're kind of weird., they wear makeup and masks like KISS when they perform, supposedly they're Satanic, but who isn't :) but the music is good.

I guess you could dissect the nuances of each genre all day, but rock - at least in the style that I like - seems to be on life support.

I don't like many new (using that synonymously with "relatively in their prime") artists to begin with, but the few I do like seem to be of a more folkly/Americana genre. John Moreland and Ian Noe would be two examples.

One thing I really miss is the anticipation for a new release from an artist. Man, I used to count down the days for those. But that's very few and far between now.

I completely agree with you on Rock. There are so few who even seem to be doing that now or I am compltely out of touch with those that are

Listened to Spectrum today driving to help do taxes for AARP. Pretty good. YEP is good but i know what you mean about sometimes its coffee house edgy.

I live in Tucson now and there is 91.3 which is good too but sometimes can go off into too wide of genres for my taste. There is also a low power downtown radio in tucson that is definitely driven by the jocks and sometimes they play like guys that did a demo in a garage. Mostly cool stuff but at times think Yoko Ono albums.

I no longer commute so NPR is not my main radio anymore. LOL

The Tiny Desk Concerts stream, so they can be listened to anywhere. They're short live sets.

I also forgot to mention the NPR podcast All Songs Considered, which also focuses on new music: https://www.npr.org/sections/allsongs/

I'm not sure I've ever heard any of the music content on NPR live radio -- just through the app.

Happy listening!

Yeah, so much of it now is either completely mellowed out or what I would call experimental more than traditional rock.

I'm sure 1,001 bands in any genre exist; I'm just talking about what is "out there" without having to do too much digging. And if it's not "out there" in at least some reasonable capacity, well, then how good is it?

I tried to keep up with new music for a couple decades after graduating. I have mostly abandoned that, and Pitt has something to do with it. Mainly, I valiantly attempted to stay abreast of current music due to having Pitt tailgates where we had many attendees of a startlingly wide range of ages, and I’d put music mixes together to try to cater to all.

Right around the doldrums of the Chryst era when we were sucking relentlessly and much hope was lost, many members of my seat group dropped their tickets (we went from 12 down to 3 in those bad years). Our favored surface lots were eliminated and others became less available at least without gargantuan donations, so our tailgates constricted with it. We maintain one pass but rarely tailgate any longer, and when we do, it’s just a few of us geezers; the friends of friends who used to come to our parties found other interests.

So at about the 2010ish point, I stopped bothering tracking new music with very much detail. I’ve pretty much retreated to acts of my own favorite genres and era. Ultimately I think that is what most people do, some sooner than others.

I would also check H.E.R. out if you haven’t already. Very much Prince influenced, but can back it up with her multitude of skills. Voice, guitar solo, etc.

Also Phoebe Bridgers

I've found all my new music through happenstance, really.

Discovered Gary Clarke, Jr. watching CBS Sunday Morning. I found Snarky Puppy through a Larnell Lewis youtube video for Drumeo. Vulfpeck came to me through the Spotify algorithm.

I will second the NPR tiny desk concerts.

I think I first discovered Clark on an Austin City Limits show. I forget now who he was with.

My kids constantly give me new bands that have good songs.

And my one son is in a pretty good band of his own, played at the University of Alabama tailgate party at the university before 2 home games this year
