OT: NFL QB's - In perspective...

Vito Stellino is still with us!!! That's wild. He was Bouchette before Bouchette, and Bouchette seems like he's been there for 30 years...

I dunno if QBs then would fare well now, maybe they'd chaff at having all the plays called for em and the analytics and the tablets and coaches in their headsets etc

There was a good story once about the end of Joe Namaths career when he played out the string with the Rams. 1977 or such. Chuck Knox was their coach and kind of a no nonsense, more controlling guy like Chuck Noll. Joe was not quite wired that way of course. One game in a critical point there was a big third down and the rams called a TO to discuss the play. Namath comes over to confer with Knox and Pat Haden (the backup then)m
Knox starts rattling off play options. Namath demurred on them. Finally Knox was like, ok Joe, what do you wanna run. Joe looks at Haden and says "Jump Pass". Haden says, yeah, definitely Jump Pass. Knox agrees. They break up the meeting and Namath goes back...to make up that play in the huddle. The Rams had no such play.

Phillip Rivers will finish around #6 all time in passing yards. Matt Ryan could be top 5 ever and is already ahead of Montana and Unitas. Yes, you have to adjust for era.

It's hard to say? Those guys all threw for like 50% completions and double the INTS? I suppose it could just be more downfield passing?

I discuss this a lot. In this era of big stats, pass friendly, QB oriented offenses, you have less teams with decent QB's than you did in say 1978 when it was still a basic 2 WR, 1 TE, 2 RB pro set offenses.

Sure the QB had less responsibility, usually they passed like 30% of the time, and the two RBs might both have over 200 carries in a season. I remember watching the replay of Super Bowl X and the announcer calling the Cowboys "gunslingers" because they "took the huge risk" of passing on first down. LOL

Marino threw for 61,000 yards with two decent 5'9" receivers and zero weapons ever at RB and TE. Imagine him in an offense with a guy like Calvin Johnson, Randy Moss, TO, or Fitzgerald. Hell, imagine him with a pass-catching RB like Alvin Kamara or Shady who could take a screen 80 yards to the house on a regular basis or a TE like Kelce or Ertz. I really think he would throw for 80,000+ yards had he come out in 2003 instead of 1983. It's somewhat criminal that a guy like Matt Ryan might pass him on the all-time greats list.

Heard an announcer talk about an opponent being a wish bone or split back veer offense (forget which) while 1980 Pitt was considered "a passing offense." This was despite running 55% of the time that season.
