OT: NHL looking at a schedule “overhaul”

Gary Bettman has been the commish for how long? And yet the owners are still dependent on every $ of gate revenue to keep the lights on. I’m not sure what the guy does for a paycheck.

That said, I do believe franchise values have gone up 9% since covid. Maybe that’s viewed as a good thing.

But I’d be curious to see the % value of the average franchise and how that has performed vs other sports franchises since Bettman took over.

Hockey is one of the best sports to watch live and in person, and for those that can't afford or have never been exposed to the sport will not watch on TV, where all the money comes from.
It has a loyal fanbase and will be just fine.

I'd go 3 for a win, 2 for an OT win, 1 for a SO win and ZERO for every loss, that would have them playing to win all the time, with nothing guaranteeing a point.

How does it make the regular season even a little more exciting? I live in Detroit and the Pistons playing in the Kia Cup tournament is going to sell more tickets or draw more viewers. Now, if the Pistons were somehow in the playoff hunt next year more people would show up and watch on tv.

Say the NHL does something similar, would any team that won the Enterprise Rent-a-Car Cup even want to touch the thing?

I dont agree with the format but even with the format they are using, it would add more interest for a Tuesday night Pistons/Pacers game if the winner advanced to the Fan Duel Cup, which apparently is an 8 team single elimination tournament. If they did this in hockey, no I wouldn't watch it but a Pens fan would be more excited. Make this Elite 8 some big event in Vegas or wherever and it would have an NCAAT/big bowl game atmosphere with similar fan travel.

I would add the caveat that the winner was guaranteed a playoff bid or maybe a Top 3 draft pick or something like that

I agree with the underlying principle here. Losing should never garner a team anything positive. It cheats the patrons who pay for this, to know either team might be fine (in OT or after a shootout or whatever) with losing because they still get a point.

Nah. Soccer is a lot like MLB. There are less than 10 teams who are the haves, and everyone else are the have nots. It’s why I don’t fault baseball for it’s economics. But any league like the NFL, NBA and NHL with a salary cap and revenue sharing…those are the socialist leagues. .

In all seriousness, the league has nothing to lose.

It truly is the league for the complacent. The fans are just like the old time hockey governors. They are happy with the status quo.

Of course the die hard fans could care less. They like what they like and it doesn’t matter if the sport grows. But you’d think the league and owners would like to grow the game and not have to go into the office every morning and check the receipts worrying about how many cokes they sell the night before.

The league has a rabid fanbase in Canada and is popular in a few American cities. Honestly, I think that's enough for them. They dont care to be any bigger.......like MLS and US Soccer. They are very happy knowing their role.

Bayern Munich has won the Bundesliga for the last 10 years, I'd rather watch a league with poor quality play where you don't know what's going to happen before the first game.
