Holy hell I have never seen a team choke like I just watched Northern Iowa choke down the stretch of that basketball game.

That was incredible.

The Panthers were up by 12 with 44 seconds left and somehow found a way to lose the game. They kept turning the ball over underneath their own basket...again and again and again and again and again.

They were clearly the better basketball team and then at the end they literally handed the game to Texas A&M. If I didn't feel so bad for them, I would think it was fixed, their mistakes were that egregious.

I have never seen a men's college basketball team make that many ridiculously dumb mistakes in a row in crunch time. And the worst part about it was that all of their mistakes were being made by their seniors.

That was a complete meltdown on every level. Good for Texas A&M to take advantage of UNI's inexplicable mistakes but that was an absurd loss for UNI. The guys on the team will never, ever get over that loss. They will go to the grave with this one.

I was watching it unfold, and I kept thinking about the Texas A&M coach and the life threatening battle he has endured. It may sound crazy to some, but I think there was a higher power working here. It sends a loud message to never give up.

I was watching it too and was thinking it was just some young kids anuses tightening beyond belief.
It could be that too. LOL. N. Iowa won their last game on a miracle half court shot. I am still on an emotional roller coaster after those last 2 games. I love this tournament.

You need to have more than one guy on your team capable of inbounding. That NIU's usual guy, Bohannon, was on the bench injured is no excuse. Simply doing the math, after the first two inbounds mistakes and having had the long throw work for a layup, just do that again or take the tie-up and force TXAM to waste precious seconds setting up a play. NIU was still up two possessions at that point.

Dumb coaching. Feel horrible for the kids.

I don't know why they didn't bring him back in just to inbound the ball. It's not like they needed him to do anything else. His replacements were afraid to throw the ball in, and kept giving it to guys who were in bad places.

UNI wasn't the better basketball team. They were the better basketball team for 39 minutes last night. A&M is a better team, they were just outplayed last night until the end. This kind of stuff happens every year in the tournament.

That said, UNI did pull a total 1999-Jean van de Velde-at-Carnoustie in that last minute.

This kind of stuff does not happen every year. A&M had a .01% chance to win that game according to that graphic I posted above.

Crazy things do happen every year but this one stands alone.

Oh I agree, you won;t see a team blow a 12 point lead int the last minute of a game every year. That was beyond ridiculous.

I only meant there are always freak upsets, unlikely scares, and crazy finishes.

Gotcha. The one and done format doesn't necessarily identify the best team but that's what makes this tourney so great and exciting every year.

Agree 110%. And I do think it's pretty good about identifying the very best team in the end.

Offhand I can't recall any national champions that I didn't think were the top team in the country in their particular year.

I know it's not doable. Believe me. But hypothetically speaking I think the results would be different more often than not if it was best of 5. Or even best of 3.

Villanova, Kansas (with Manning) and NC State come immediately to mind without even Googling. I don't think they were the best teams. They all just got hot.
