OT: "Once Upon a Time.....in Hollywood"...

The scene in True Romance between Christopher Walken and Dennis Hopper where Hopper knows he's getting whacked, but starts jabbing Walken about the origin of Sicilians is pretty strong too.
Oh yeah, that's on the list too...."eggplant". That was fantastic.

I put those two along with this scene from Jaws....
"You put that cage in the water.
You go into the water?
Shark's in the water, our shark?
Farewell and adieu to you, Spanish ladies. Farewell and adieu to you ladies of Spain."

The scene with Samuel Jackson and the "tasty burger" with Frank Whaley (Big brain Brad) is one of my five all time favorite movie scenes. What?

Yeah, that was a great scene. "Big Kahuna" burger; of course Jackson wouldn't
know how tasty because his girlfriend is a vegetarian.... " I guess that makes me a
vegetarian."
The way Jackson mixes seriousness with sarcasm and humor followed by murdering Big brain Bian is typical Tarantino.

Just saw it on a plane yesterday. Was actually bored with it and stopped watching halfway through...then came back to it and was glad I did. The Spohn ranch scene with the hippies and George, and then the final scene...wow good stuff.

I was not a fan of Hateful Eight. Tarantino is not for everyone that's for sure.
I’m one of those people. I’ve tried but I just can’t get into the guy’s work. I just think he’s wildly overrated and his films are fine, but rarely special. In fact, they are typically pretty bad. Pulp Fiction was good, Reservoir Dogs was better. Most of the rest of his work has been more hype than substance and frankly, pretty pedestrian.

True romance is still one of my favorites.

Of the Tarantino works I've seen, I'd probably rate them as: Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, Reservoir Dogs, Hateful Eight, Inglorious Basterds, Deathproof, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Django Unchained. But even thought I'd put Once Upon a Time near the bottom, I still thoroughly enjoyed it. It's not like the Cohen Brothers where I love some of their stuff and then hate some of their other stuff... I dig pretty much everything Quentin Tarantino has done (that I've seen).

I know there are some other movies he's been involved with (Dusk til Dawn, Natural Born Killers, True Romance, etc.), but I'm not counting those, because they're not part of his "10" (or at least I don't believe they are). I actually haven't seen True Romance, but it sounds like I should. I also have to check out the Kill Bill movies, which I've steered away from after hearing they were pretty gory... not that some of the others on that list weren't, I guess. But I don't think QT is overrated as a director. He has his quirky tendencies, and I guess you could like them or dislike them. But I still think they're mostly done with a pretty high quality.

That's because I won't watch them. he's a screwball.
The world needs its share of screwballs. I love Once Upon a Time, mostly because that was my era and I identified with the music and history. Plus I am a Tarentino fan.

True Romance is fantastic. One of my favorite films.

And I posted in another thread, I got to see Once Upon a Time in Hollywood over the Christmas break and I really, really enjoyed the film. I liked it much better than the Irishman. I thought it was great and really captured the time and LA scene back then.

Loved this one... Favorite Tarantino anything since maybe Pulp Fiction. Of what I've seen, only really like Parasite better for sure for '19. Lighthouse and Uncut Gems were great too. One Cut o the Dead and Forest of Love also pretty great. Shadow, especially the look, pretty great. Knives Out also pretty great. Also kind of loved In Fabric. Last Black Man in San Francisco really great too.

1917 very good but a lesser Gravity, Children of Men, Revenant type film. Jojo Rabbit pretty good too but not on the level of the others mentioned. Us also very good. Apollo 11, Ad Astra and Crawl really good too.

Didn't see Marriage Story yet. Didn't care for Irishman. Thought Joker worked only as a straight parody of serial killer biopics but don't think they was the intention. Had me dying laughing from the opening moments. Didn't love Little Women but maybe just not my jam. Midsommar the same. Pain & Glory the same. Booksmart the same.

Blockbusters... Toy Story 4 was very good. Rise of Skywalker and especially Lion King were trash. Spidey and Endgame were good. Captain Marvel was alright... Too bland for me. Frozen 2... Not gonna see. It 2 not great. Aladdin not to great. John Wick 3 pretty great.

I disagree with some of this but appreciate all your opinions.

Love any post with a Children of Men reference.

Oscar nominations out.
No real surprises.
BP has one odd nominee a Korean film, Predators??
Rest of nominees, no big surprises.
Torentino vs. Scorscese director battle. (sp)

You and your fam seem to catch a lot of movies on the big screen. Keep supporting movie houses! Love it. I truly love going to the cinema. Even the movies I don't think much of... Glad I caught them on a big screen. Scares me to think of future in which everything is streaming and theaters don't exist.

In this city we have an especially impressive one... That Rangos IMAX at the Science Center.

Parasite. Probably should've snagged a Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress nomination too. I'd have given it a Cinematography nom too. Probably Score too. It's pretty much a perfect movie on just about every level... It's the type of movie for people that see a lot movies that's that tired cliche of "reason I go to the movies."

Can't Lupita Nyongo didn't get a Best Actress nomination for Us. Little surprised Ad Astra wasn't up for VFX. Lotta other head scratchers too. Irishman for VFX? Joker for Makeup/Costuming? Assume that's solely for clown makeup and a purple suit? Seems a stretch given how elaborate done others are Costumed and Makeup.

Two Popes getting any nominations is disappointing. Meh movie for me.

Uncut Gems being shutout is expected but disappointing. Sandler should've been up for Actor, Safdies for Director... I'd have nominated it for Original Screenplay, Score and Editing too.

Seems Netflix did quite well in nominations. 2 for best picture and numerous acting and other nods.

Doesn't auger well for the big screen.
I think Spielberg tried to stop this last year, but obviously wasn't successful.
It means paychecks for the actors and technicians, etc. in the business, so I guess their attitude is the more the merrier!

My picks were pretty dire, cynical this year outside of Last Black Man but that's pretty melancholy too. Will say last year my favorite film was Paddington 2. Maybe the best family flick I've seen this past decade with Coco. Perfect direction... Perfect everything. So... Just a heads up that I like uplifting, bouncy, whimsical stuff too when I feel it delivers.

Paddington was a hidden gem of a film. Both were great

Netflix is great for stuff like Marriage Story. Not so much for Irishman.

Roma was a HUGE win for Netflix last year. Won a ton of major rewards. I think most didn't realize it was Netflix because it's foreign language so, to many, almost doesn't count. I don't think anything nominated this year will get Roma level Oscar recognition combined.

It's like the Parasite director said, Oscars are VERY local. If folks can move beyond the one inch barrier of subtitles it opens an enormous world of amazing film. Many, many years the best film isn't domestic. And, when I say that, I don't even mean arthouse international films. Some incredible suspense, adventure, horror and thriller stuff... Especially out of South Korea over the past 20 years.

Yes. Especially 2. And, yes, not nearly enough know they even exist. But... When you show them, they wake up fast. Purposely bought them as gifts for a lot of families for Christmas the past few years.

Ugh, this movie fell below the line and why people are calling it a masterpiece is beyond me. Maybe I need to start lowering my expectations for films because there are so few that I want to go watch anymore. This one definitely had me excited due to the director and the two male actors in it.

I appreciated the Hollywood feel in the movie and the 1969 vibe. The scene where Pitt goes to Spahn Ranch was the best part IMO. There were some good moments for sure and Tarantino's view on how he wanted the events that August 8th evening to go down was head scratching.

I sure hope the actor who played Charles Manson gets more air time in season two of Mindhunter. Also, DiCaprio should consider giving up smoking.
the thing is he already just did the alternate history schtick with Inglorious Basterds...

Django too to an extent. And, in a way, Death Proof with flipping it on Russell being the fleeing victim bring chased and tortured by the "helpless" women. This isn't new to him.

I think it's done best of all in Hollywood.

I also thought the "Once Upon a Time..." was a clear sign that it was going to be a story, not a reenactment.
