OT: Penn State suffering from (runway) size anxiety

So how did Penn State get to the Rose Bowl in previous years? It wasn't on nonstop flight from State College?

Is busing to Harrisburg and then flying out of there.....or refueling in Nebraska or whatever for their ONE West Coast road trip every other year really that big of a deal that its worth spending however many millions it would take to extend a runway? This seems so stupid. Also, why does State College even have an airport other than for small personal aircraft?

I have a friend who works at the State College airport. UCLA flew two Boeing 737s into State College last weekend.

He was also pissed that Franklin made those comments because millions of dollars have been spent to upgrade that airport including a large runway expansion project years ago. He also said, say what you want about Paterno, but they flew out of Harrisburg for decades and he never made a big deal out of it. 😂
I remember when ND flew in and it was a huge deal because it was the first time a full sized jet liner ever landed there before the runway was lengthened. I was near the runway for an acoustics study and that plane needed every inch of runway. Made one hell of a roar to stop.

I don't think people appreciate how much of their money has gone towards infrastructure in and around State College just for football games. They're working on expanding 322 now and improving the I-99/I-80 interchange. Fighting over some bypass but I forget the details. The airport had the runway lengthened, a tower built, and basically got a brand new terminal. Plus all of the infrastructure improvements that go on every time they add another big housing/condo plan.

Harrisburg...this Hootervlle Airport they have up there is a relatively new phenomenon...All teams flying in regardless of distance always went through Harrisburg I think through the early 1990s....Lovely scenic two hour drive...

The interchange is interesting. That whole highway network up there is totally patchwork and was built in bits and pieces over time. But the 99/80 interchange is the way that it is because of that plan that they had 20 years ago to toll I-80. So they built that interchange like Breezewood on the turnpike, where you have to briefly get off the highway, take a small surface road, and then get onto another highway. Except that the feds denied the proposal (which has caused a bunch of other problems) and it ended up with this strange highway interchange that backs up like crazy. Now they’re finally making it so that you can just merge straight from I-80 to I-99, which is how it should have been all along.

Then, they’ve been trying to make 322 a four lane road up to State College for 30 years, and they’re like two miles away from finally getting it done. I remember years ago going up there from the Harrisburg area, you’d get backed up when it went to two lanes outside of Lewistown, and it was a massive project to get it done. Then they did the same thing through the back half of the Seven Mountains a few years ago, and now they’re fighting with the residents on that final couple of miles to State College to finally get it finished.

I love how I99 magically reappears when you cross the PA/NY border...not sure why the stretch of US15 north of Williamsport has not been designated I99 yet as it meets the interstate standards. IMO the most beautiful 60 mile stretch of highway in PA

UCLA flew into State College with two planes but I understand when they left, they drove to Harrisburg and flew back home in one plane.

I don't know. I used to travel that way a lot when they were starting construction. Could be something as dumb as proper signage.

train don't run out of State College lessen you're a hog or cattle, people train runs out of Tyrone...Owen will get ya there...
History of Tyrone Station

"By the end of the 19th century, Tyrone was the busiest stop on the PRR between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. Functioning as the primarily departure point for students and visitors to nearby Pennsylvania State University, the depot bustled at holiday time and during school breaks. The PRR provided Tyrone with a solid economic base. In the late 1890s, the Tyrone Division of the railroad employed about 450 city residents, or about 1 in 13 Tyroners. Others labored in local manufacturing concerns that were able to ship their goods across the country due to the town’s excellent rail connections. Those links were soon augmented by a network of state highways that intersected at Tyrone, earning it the nickname “Hub of the Highways.”

"Basketball Jones featuring Tyrone Shoelaces"

Is Tyrone Shoelaces named after that town?

I think what is really bothering Franklin is that this is extra cost. Programs are responsible for managing their own travel costs. Funniest thing in the world is listening to a D2 coach talk about having to book hotel rooms for a road trip. The extra cost of hiring a few grand in busses is one less helicopter trip he can take to grandstand for a recruit.

I think he found out that other teams use the bus trips through the Deliverance section of the state in recruiting. You don't think Michigan wouldn't say "You'll be on bus for three hours before getting on the plane at PsU, here at Michigan its 10 minutes from Willow Run or 20 minutes from DTW".

It's weird he'd make an issue out of it if that's the case. I'd think he'd downplay it or try to turn it into a positive. He's a huckster so I don't think that's it.

Or, like most quotes from coaches, he was asked a question (regarding travel to CA) and that was part of his answer…..which is actually what happened.

Lubrano is still alive. I’d pitch it to him. ‘Joe Paterno Regional Airport’. They could put the statue there.

Meanwhile, a second outspoken Penn State trustee has a lawsuit pending against the board over the cost of defending himself in an internal board investigation. A judge in Lackawanna County ruled last month that the board must stop its investigation into Anthony Lubrano until it pays his legal costs. Lubrano had tried, unsuccessfully, to have the stadium renamed for the late coach Joe Paterno. The nature of the investigation remains confidential.

Is it me or wouldn't it just be easier to stop somewhere and refuel? It's probably 2-hours either way so it just seems like an extra step to take a bus to Harrisburg.
You would think with all their power and prestige they could afford a mid air refueling aircraft awaiting somewhere over Nebraska. A Sandusky KC-46A tanker could pull up behind the smaller team aircraft extend its nozzle and shoot its load into it thus eliminating the long bus ride of the youngsters..
