Ot: Pens vs Bolts pre series discussion thread

First, let me say that you are preaching to the choir here. I am in favor of the cages. I agree they offer the most protection. I'm also in favor of eliminating fighting.

I just don't think it would change anything regarding hockey's popularity.

Like soccer, hockey is a foreign game to most Americans and for that reason neither sport will ever be fully embraced the majority of the American people.

Here's the thing....as a hockey enthusiast. and have been one since I was born, we are talking Pierre Larouche days not even Mario.....I. DON'T CARE. I love the sport. Many people in Pittsburgh love this sport Out and about today there was a spring in the step of people. People are excited. Who cares if some luddite doesn't understand or like the sport.

That is my advice to soccer fans also.

Human nature. Expounding - if somehow international soccer had a definitive presence in Pittsburgh, I feel pretty confident we would be thrilled to follow. As it is, that doesn't exist.

All you need to know about the NHL is the following........

The Pens/Caps was a bonkers series as far as ratings were concerned. Of course, it was the 2nd rd. Now, they play the Lightening.

The Pens start the series on Friday Night. Then play game 2.....on.......MONDAY.

The Western Conference don't start until next week.

So this Saturday Night, no NBA games scheduled, the NHL has decided, "eh **** it, we don't need the spotlight to ourselves".

Just abject incompetence.
Toronto CANADA

These idiots are bound to take a niche Number 4 major league sport to 5.
Until HQ is moved to Madison Ave this is where Goonkey is headed

And that will happen when Canada freezes over!!

By the way, part of the problem with the schedule is due to the fact that the arena in Dallas was not available on Sunday. That's why they had to wait until after the Stars-Blues series concluded to try and figure out the rest of the schedule. My guess is that they would have preferred to start the East on Saturday and the West on Sunday but they didn't want to wait until they knew if Dallas would win their series to start setting the schedule.

That makes sense. Then again, you are giving the NHL credit which is dangerous.

Yep, that's basically how I feel too. I love it but if others do not, that's fine too.

It's actually illegal to wear full facial protection in the NHL without a facial injury. My guess is since it's a pro sport, the league wants to have some facial recognition.

No, it's some stupid Canadian "code", they want to make sure that fighting continues. Maybe the NFL should ban facemasks for "facial recognition" to! lol

This statement is simply factually incorrect. For instance the offsides rule, probably the most important rule in the game, has been changed several times over the years. And of course many leagues have already started using replays to determine if there was a goal scored or not on a close play when it is difficult for the referee to make that determination. In fact the most popular soccer league in the world uses the system. Soon every league with the ability and cash to install the systems will join in.

And of course that doesn't even take into account the different interpretations of the rules that are in effect today. If a ref from today was magically transported back 30 years and called a game the same way the game is officiated today there wouldn't be much more than about a half a dozen players left on the field by the end of the game. Counting the goalies.

Still, it's fundamentally the same. Which league uses replay? So I can make sure to not watch that one. I've never seen replay ruin my enjoyment of watching a soccer game like it ruins my experience for all the other sports. As for "interpretations of rules" same thing goes for other sports, NHL vs. Olympics, College basketball vs. NBA etc.

Champions League knockout stages.

What's wrong with that though? NOTHING, that's what. It's just not the way Americans think it should be done. America is wrong about a lot of things. It's still done in a fair way and the winner knows the rules up front, and the team with the most goals wins, outside of the "away goal" being the tie breaker, but so what? why do you get 1 point less for a shot 1" inside the 3 point line? That's just as arbitrary.

Champions League knockout stages.

Champions League knock out stages don't determine who wins the Champions League. The winner of the final game does. It's no more aggregate goal than any other sporting event.

Furthermore, aggregate goals is only used as a tiebreaker when one team doesn't clearly win the series. The NFL uses tiebreakers. One of them is even aggregate points. The NHL and the NBA both use tiebreakers. What's the difference?

79, most of the best soccer leagues in the world use replay. The Premier League, the Bundesliga, Seria A and Ligue 1 all use it. So did the last World Cup. MLS offered to allow the league to be used as the test league for a system a few years ago, but was turned down. At this point the only thing stopping MLS from implementing a system is that they don't want to spend the money to pay for it.

I love soccer, it is by far my favorite sport to follow. But, it is very quirky. And yes, aggregate goals ARE used to determine advancement and therefore titles -- unlike any other sport of which I am aware.

Additionally, multiple competitions are taking place at the same time. Teams throw games to focus one one verses another. Playoffs take place the year after the regular season. Clubs take breaks for international exhibition games. To me all this madness adds to the fun of it all, but it is without question, quirky.

No, they do not. They do use goal line technology, which immediately lets the ref know a goal has been scored. They do NOT stop play to review video. That time may soon be here, but as of now, it is not used.

No, they aren't. Aggregate goals are a tiebreaker, nothing more, nothing less. If my team wins both games the aggregate is irrelevant. If my team wins one and ties one the aggregate is irrelevant. The aggregate is only relevant if there is a tie. Just like if the Stillers and the Bengals end the season tied the NFL uses tiebreakers to determine which wins the division and which doesn't.

Goal line technology is replay. To argue otherwise is silly.

I watch plenty of soccer, I've never seen anything reviewed. I hope it stays that way.

Unless it's some sort of chip in the ball that registers a signal if it breaks the plane of the goal line? That would be fine, if it's instantaneous and doesn't delay the action of the game even for a minute.
