University of Pittsburgh's Innovation Institute breaks record for spinouts
Pittsburgh Business Times
Lian Bunny, Feb 16, 2018
With about four months left in its fiscal 2018, the University of Pittsburgh’s Innovation Institute has already broken its record for university spinouts.
The institute is currently at 17 spinout companies. Its fiscal 2018 ends at the end of June.
There were 15 spinouts in fiscal 2017, 13 in 2016 and 11 in 2015, the institute’s first year. In 2014, before the institute existed, there were six university spinouts.
Evan Facher interim director of the institute, said the growing numbers show how the university has progressed as the institute has worked to promote innovation and entrepreneurship for four years.
He said the institute has brought in people with different backgrounds, not "just Ph.D. technical folks."
“It’s been a fairly significant short-term culture shift on campus,” he said.
Even departments outside of the traditional entrepreneurship and research ones are showing the change in attitude, Facher said.
The university is hosting its first Performance Innovation Tournament, combining the athletics department, Clinical and Translational Services Institute, the Office of the Provost and the Office of the Senior Vice Chancellor for Research.
Pitt faculty, staff and students are invited to pitch innovative ideas to improve human performance in athletics. Each application must have a faculty sponsor. The deadline to apply is March 14.
The first place idea will get $80,000 and four season tickets for Pitt’s upcoming football season. Second place will get $70,000.
The funds are meant to help develop prototypes and test the technology.
“How many campuses in the United States have the department of athletics trying to work side-by-side with researchers across the entirety of campus?” said Facher. “The spirit of that is brand new.”
