OT: Pitt student vanishes on spring break trip to Dominican Republic while walking on beach

This story unfortunately doesn’t sound good. I’ve been there and while it can be awesome there’s also spots that aren’t and times you wouldn’t want to be out.

4:50 am is not the time to be out very many places.

Hate to say it but 4:50AM on a beach, very possibly drunk, doesn't always end well. My guess would be she drowned. I've been to this resort.....well a different Riu on what is essentially a Riu campus and I have a hard time believe a local got into the secure campus and snatched her.

I've been watching way too much MrBallen (he's kind of an annoying cliche-spouting dork, but it's good background noise) to think this will have a happy ending.

So far it is being reported that there were a group of 5 girls and 2 guys and they all eventually left except for she and another guy stayed behind. Video shows him later leaving the beach alone. I am afraid these results aren't going to be good.

If those are all college kids, what sense does it make to kill this girl? I figured she either accidentally drowned or was abducted/killed by a local. Why would some Purdue student want to kill a girl on Spring Break? Though that may have been what happened.

The only thing about "accidentally drowned" is.....she was swimming alone at that time? And in how deep of water, by now wouldn't tides wash her ashore?

So it makes more sense if she was killed by a local? Young women are killed frequently and none if it makes any sense unless you’re effed in the head.

Poverty breeds crime. DR is a poverty-stricken country and thus the crime rates are very high. So it would make more sense to me that a local would commit some type of abduction/rape/murder than some Big Ten or ACC student. However, it certainly appears that it was a college bro who did this.

This is a very posh resort

You never cease to amaze me. Well done.

Well, and I'm not saying he was involved at all, I think you're starting with the assumption that it was premeditated. Many of these things seem to start as accidents, and then a person doesn't want to go down for the first thing so it escalates.

Example: Two drunk people argue; person A pushes person B; person B lands very badly and starts bleeding from the head; person A panics and thinks they are already in too deep...

That resort is not in an area that locals would typically be. It is fairly secluded. So, other than resort employees, it is doubtful that many locals would be up in that area. Too easy to stick out. There are a lot more resorts much closer to where the locals live where they could be much more inconspicuous.

Yea, I dont think it was premeditated and could be as you describe.

Yeah but again at that time of the evening (morning) that's not good....for anyone to be solo alone and leaving a group, especially women.

Yeah I doubt drowning because she would have been found

I think something way more nefarious at this point.

Hoping for the best… but… guy left beaches alone? Doesn’t sound good

Looking more like a drowning as I originally thought.

Her clothes were found on a beach bed, which is consistent that she took them off to go in the water. The guy she was with said they were in the water and were taken out by a large wave.

Its one of 2 things: either she drowned or this guy killed her accidentally somehow or raped/murdered her.

Not to be morbid, but if she drowned off the shore, likely she would have washed up by now.

While it sort of seems like a drowning, I do wonder about the guy that she was with. If they both got taken out by a large wave, why would he just swim to land and not tell anyone when he realized she wasn't there?

Also, I know what is known as Punta Cana isn't just the city of Punta Cana - it covers nearly the entire eastern side of the island, so I could be very wrong here. But I don't recall significant waves or currents around the resorts I've been to. The water was more similar to Montego Bay Jamaica or Riviera Maya. Very calm. Again, I could be totally off base. Just basing it on what I've seen where I've visited.

True story: I was at one of the Riu's on this campus about 10 years ago. I was taken under by a wave and for a second or 2, I thought it was over. Probably the only time in my life that's happened.

There must be pockets of areas where there isn't a reef to break up the waves.

It wasn't even some monster wave. The water was just rough that day. My body was being flung around like I had no control and I thought, crap, I'm going to drown. I regained control within a few seconds so I wouldn't say I was close to drowning, just that for a second or 2, I truly thought that I was.
