OT: RIP Randy Cosgrove...

Just saw Sam Nover passed too. Grew up watching guys like Nover, Bill Currie, and Hillgrove doing sports on the 3 local stations (one ugly plaid blazer after another).
Sam later did play by play for NBC NFL games too. He would sometimes do Steeler - Bengals games with Bob Trumpy (who had recently retired from the Bengals) ... they'd have some amusing dueling homerism during those broadcasts...

I was living in Mt Washington in 2000 and my roommate at the time interviewed for the head soccer coach for Ambridge. we are all in our mid 20s at the time, goofballs so my buddy tells me to start answering the phone like a normal person cause the AD for Ambridge will be calling this number, telling me he got job. So im like, sure bro.
Well a day later, I pick up the phone and it's Cosgrove. I know this dude's voice instantly. I think he may have even done sports talk at ESPN 1250 at the time (I could be wrong). So im like "yo Coz, what's up man.. How are the steelers looking man?" and my roommate almost has a heart attack. Flips out on me, grabs phone..
Coz was pretty cool though and my roommate got the job..

I really miss Cosgrove at the Steelers games. He was everything a PA announcer should be. Pittsburgh has had some great ones with Cosgrove, the late John Barbaro, and current Pirates PA announcer Tim DeBacco.

I recall those sports talk shows. At commercials I recall he would say "here's a pause for the Cos".
RIP Randy. He was my AD during my time at AAHS (97-01). He was a pleasant person. I will say that he did leave Ambridge on controversial terms, not sure how that all resolved. As an AD, my one criticism of the guy is that he didn't do much to promote his athletes to colleges. He was a big-picture leader who did everything in his power to prop up the brand of the school, but he had some pretty talented kids who went D2 and D3 in several sports and a number of us felt really abandoned. I will say that Randy was very sweet and kind to both my parents and I really appreciated that.

I loved watching Currie, especially whe he filled in for the weather forecast. On the weather map He would draw a vertical line from the Canadian border to the Gulf of Mexico at the Mississippi River and write in bold letters “WHO CARES” across the entire 3 western time zones.
The whole “it’s a Pittsburgh Steeler... first down” thing over the PA goes right through me.
Not sure why.

I think I'm still partially blind from those sports jackets he used to wear. Made Craig Sager's wardrobe look tame.
I think this is the guy that wants to meet me at the stadium to fight cause I said pitt stadium was in bad shape.. my man loves him some pitt stadium and will fight anyone that says different..
I love the passion though from goadie, as misplaced as it is..
im gonna wear one of those old "Save our stadium" shirts the students had in the late 90's, just to throw him off my scent..
