OT- SCF Game #1 ..... Pens vs Nashville ......

Ugly game for Pens and overall obviously not a good game. But a W is a W especially in the Cup Finals.

I trust Sullivan will have them ready to play in Game 2.

Wow. Reading this thread this morning is hilarious. NONE of the posts that you guys made were wrong (except for the one where the guy said it was over). But it is hilarious because I am reliving my thoughts during that game reading your posts and I could have said the same thing at any of those times.

The Pens were awful. Just awful. As I texted my buddy after period 2, to be that outplayed by a team and only have a -1 on the scoreboard during that period is amazing. "I can't believe the score". And of course, it didn't get any better in the 3rd and the inevitable (Nashville catching the Pens on the scoreboard) happened.

Then lightning struck. Goal. Over. This was an epic epic steal, heist of this game. No way should the Pens have won. But they did, and it is 1-0.

You have to wonder, of course Laviollette (great coach) will be hammering the positives that if they play like that, the breaks will eventually go their way and they will win the series. But...you have to also wonder doubt, if they are thinking that there is no way the Pens are going to play that bad and they couldn't beat us when they were at their best and we were at our worse.

Game 2 is large. A Penguin win and it could be a short series.

Fortunate to have won that game. Pens were comatose for much of the night. They just can't seem to come out every night ready to play. Kind of weird for this time of the year...

Yes that's a diff from some of the teams of the past. This one seems to have coaches and the right mix of players that will recognize and acknowledge that, even though they won, there's need to adjust or work harder and will target doing that. Some of the past teams wouldn't do so. As awesome as Mario was, and later Jagr, both an asset and a shortcoming was the supreme confidence that all their talent would ultimately prevail and they didn't have to change anything (or certainly not listen to a coach suggesting as much). ESPECIALLY not after a win!

But with this bunch you do have the sense that Sullivan and staff likely pored over video of the game all night, and probably two minutes from now will have the team willingly working on the practice rink going over different lines, tactics etc to fix the issues. May still not work, but you feel confident they're not leaving it to chance like the old teams would.

Honestly I think that game was good for us. Not only are we up 1-0, but they're gonna come out and be way better next game. Usually they respond that way after a loss, this time the other way.

And the Nashville, they were saying how psychologically draining it is when you outplay your opponent by that much and still don't win.

Not sure it is that weird to be honest. Guess it depends on the reasons for why they have these off games.

Frankly, I am sure they are physically AND emotionally drained. This is back to back years after winning Cup last season and it is an absolute blood bath grind to get to the end.

I know it sounds easy to say suck it up for one more series, but it is the hardest championship in sports to win and that difficulty shows with how few back to back champions there are in hockey. Winning the Cup this season would be an unbelievable accomplishment.

They could be hitting a wall at this point. Hopefully they have something left in the tank to finish the job. I do think they are a better team than Nashville but they certainly need to play better rest of the series than they did in Game 1.

Things were going the Pens way until that Nashville fan threw the catfish on the ice. I am convinced that ritual is legit and brings horror to the opposition. No shots on goal for 37 minutes?

Pittsburghers have a responsibility to make sure Predator fans do not hide a catfish in their pants and change the momentum again.

Lol that the charging the freak fan for an "innocent" prank is getting media criticism. Like to see how innocent it would be considered for a Pgh fan to smuggle in a Steelers helmet into Slim Pickens Arena (or whatever it is there) and heave it onto the ice...

What would the charges have been if his throw didn't reach the ice and the fish hit a fan in the 10th row?

Tell the New York Times to alert Isis
... just waltz into Nashville's arena with a shrapnel IED wrapped in a flounder. No questions asked for tossing it into the middle of the ice. Hopefully while Lacey Underalls is lip syncing the national anthem.

It worked for Guentzel and it worked for Kunitz ..... you are 2 for 2 .... LOL !
This was a really odd game. Pitt played well early and well enough late but for 2 whole periods in the middle they were out hustled, out hit, out shot and out scored.

But the final score was in our favor and a win is better than a loss.

I expect the Pens to play much better going forward. A win tomorrow night puts enormous pressure on the Preds.

Anyone throwing anything onto the ice [other than hats] should have their asses thrown in jail. A player could be seriously injured skating over a foreign object. Some things just aren't funny. Of course those Rocky Toppers probably don't consider catfish foreign objects since they are caught in he good ole USA.

Really. They already dumped Kevin Stallings on us, isn't that enough garbage to hurl at Pittsburgh.

That was a night of crazy emotions. We extended a Pittsburgh trip to add a day and go to the game (wife of the year award to Mrs. Ripper) and it was the first Stanley Cup game for us. Awesome atmosphere. Amazing start. Heart attack for the next 45 minutes. Jubilation thanks to Jake. Nail biting for 3 more minutes.

We were going to go to Nashville for game 4, but it cost us less to buy lower level seats for Game 1, change our flights to the next day, and add a hotel night for both of us than it would have cost for ONE ticket to game 4 in Nashville. If only they could have started on Sunday we could have saved $900 by not having to change the flight, add the hotel night, and not done the Sunday dinner on Mt. Washington. Damn you, Gary Bettman!!
