OT: Smokers

I'm pretty inexperienced with smoking meat. Pretty much limited to the box smoker with methylated spirits (called "meths" here) for fish and chicken wings.
Opportunity has knocked though. We stopped at the coffee truck driving yesterday and they had just amazing smoked pulled pork sandwiches (slaw on them but don't mention that nitter place). So my wife mentioned getting a smoker so we could make stuff like that.
I know very little other than a bit of browsing at the Mitre 10 store.
So who has a smoker?
Best type? Electric? Pellet? Old school wood fired or charcoal?
Help me out here. I have to act while she can still remember that sandwich.
