OT: Steelers/Matt Canada rumor

Is Leftwich any better? Every time I've watched them this season, they've been mired in a 13-10 game just like us.
They finished the regular season 15th in yards per game (not bad) and 25th in point per game (one slot above us, not great). They took a significant step back from 2021… my biggest concern would if Leftwich’s success prior to this season was due to Arians either having influence over the offense or calling the plays altogether.

I think Tomlin should hire the best OC available - not another Steelers retread
I’d almost be concerned if he was waiting to make a move in Canada depending on if Leftwich gets fired. I’d like to think that NFL head coaches have multiple names in mind at any given time for coordinator positions and, in this case, Coach T could simply go with another option instead of accepting the current status quo.

Yeah, and it's especially concerning when you're talking about waiting around for a guy potentially getting shit-canned, as opposed to waiting to interview some stud coordinator for a HC position or something after his team gets bounced in the playoffs.

This probably wouldn't do much to improve our image as a floundering organization full of cronyism and nepotism.

Filiponi will throw just about anything out there, despite how credible it is, so I don't buy this too much, but this would be a very bad sign if true.

Agreed. For example, why not go after someone like Eric Bieniemy? It seemed like a forgone conclusion that he’s either getting a head coaching job or taking over for Andy Reid someday, but Tennessee requested to interview him for their OC job. Leaving Kansas City and having success here or elsewhere, even if it’s just for a year or two, would guarantee him a head coaching job.

Edit: there’s also lesser-known guys coming up through the ranks like Mike Kafka and Zac Robinson.

I appreciate how Leftwich handled his time w the Steelers, but I have the same reservations w him as an OC, as others.

Honestly, I could see him coming in as qb coach and passing game coordinator to work w Canada.

Sort of what he did w Flores and Austin

Tomlin made the decision to draft Pickett. Looks like that was the right decision (although not certain)

Tomlin made the decision to invest in Kenny and bench Mitch. Also the right decision.

Tomlin now needs to complete the trifecta and get a good offensive mind in here for his QB.

Tomlin’s legacy depends on it.

i was thinking that same thing. if it's got to be a minority hire, being the steelers and all, i'd rather have Bienemy. i know andy reid calls the plays but some of that ingenuity has had to have rubbed off on him.

I’m not sure about that. He hasn’t been wowing anyone outside of KC. But maybe.

Leftwich seems like the better option to me. He seems to have Brady’s respect.

But I’d look long and hard at the 49ers staff. I’m sure everyone else is waiting for the 49ers to lose.

And Kingsbury has a relationship with Tomlin. Although that guy doesn’t seem to want any jobs any time soon.

Agreed. There’s even lesser known guys like Mike Kafka or Zac Robinson that might be worth taking a chance on. I just think that with the talent we have on offense and where they’re at in their developmental stages, we’d be doing them a disservice by keeping Canada around another season for the sake of his contract.

Yeah, Kingsbury bought himself a one way ticket to Thailand.

Not only that, but people think a new OC would retard Kenny’s growth because he’d have to learn a new system with new terminology.

But I think an experienced guy can build an offense around Kenny, utilizing much of the stuff Kenny already knows.

But what do I know.

terrible mindset. so with that thought process, you cant fire canada next year either.

Right, I think that could be a concern at the college level but in the NFL, your only job is knowing and executing plays. If they get rid of Canada within the next month, he’ll have nearly 7 months to focus solely on learning the playbook. That’s more than enough time.

Take this with the smallest, and I mean tiniest, grain of salt when considering the source.

Interesting food for thought.
NO to both of them! Matt Canada is terrible as an OC, that is why he has bounced around job to job so quickly. Byron Leftwich is not very good either. Please, PLEASE do NOT try to associate any success that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have had during his time there with his name.
MY GOD, the man had what most people outside of Pittsburgh, would consider to be the greatest QB in the history of the game in Tom Brady. Add to that, players like Rob Gronkowski, Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Leonard Fournette, Antonio Brown, Julio Jones among others have allowed the Tampa Bay tea, to become the success we see today. Does any one think that Tom Brady really listens to anything that Leftwich says to him??? I seriously doubt it.
I am not a Steelers fan at all and if it wasn't for the presence of Kenny Pickett being their starting QB, I'd be very happy if Canada was to remain the OC. If Tomlin retains Canada, then his job should be on the line. It is 2023 and the Steelers offense that Tomlin wants to run is out of date.

Andrew Filliponi is "The Fan's" version of Mark Madden. Not as obnoxious or arrogant as Madden, but yet the same. They say and do stuff to gain themselves attention, much the same way as Antonio Brown and Ben Roethlisberger did while in Pittsburgh.

i actually dont mind the Poni or Mueller show at all. both seem pretty good. i dont see the contrarian troll thing from these guys like i do Madden..

Poni has taken his Pickett love to a new level and i think it's gotten to the point where he is just messing with people now so i guess that's kind of troll(Ish).

he does his teases on twitter to promote his radio show but there isnt a person on tv or radio on this planet that doesnt use that sales tactic dating back to the advent of radio/tv.

Agree. Poni has worn on me and he has become a true converted yinzer. He is no longer just a pure contrarian like Madden or Smizik.

He was a running back, and my memory is he didn't kill it other places mostly.

They need to find a way to build from what worked this year w the run game, find some one who can really develop a qb and if Tomlin us bent on bringing him back hold Canada's hand in the passing game.

Matt Williamson, ex of Pitt and NFL scout said today that the Tampa offense is the only offense in the league that is as bad as the Steelers. For him he said Leftwich is a hard no.

Steelers should bring in Whipple as QB coach for Pickett, if they choose to retain Canada.

Might as well go all in with former Pitt guys 🙂

i feel like whipple said he was leaving the east coast to go care for a sick wife or get her to some hospital on the west coast.

of course he said that before going to Nebraska so he must not care about her that much..

I'd have the same concern. Now if Arians had a coaching tree with proven offensive minds around the league my opinion would be different. I just don't believe that's the case.
