OT: Steve Blass

seems like a great guy, not afraid to laugh at himself and didn't take himself too serious, you don't see that a lot.. never ran and hid from his control issues, openly talked about them for decades.. again, you don't see that too often..

Happy retirement to him. well deserved..

Will be missed. Wonder if Wehner will go full time or they find someone else to split with him.

I was a little 2nd grader when the 71 Buccos went to the big show .
Blass was one of my favorites .
Of course along with the Great one .
Never forget running home from school to catch the series on TV .
The nuns would put the start of the games on the p.a. speakers .
Thank you Steve .
I fell in love with baseball that year .

My adult children (and so many others of their generation) have never had the pleasure of watching the Pirates play in a World Series. For that reason alone, Pirate ownership should put the team on the market - to sell to someone who has a genuine commitment to winning.

But we’re witnessing the problem with MLB today: when these teams can make a tidy profit without winning, it kills the incentive that an owner might have to spend what it takes to produce a successful team.

Yes, there really needs to be a salary floor and cap.

Our nuns let us watch it live...except the night game.

rumor has it he a a ball working there..and another ball and another and another and another and another.......
Sure it ended sadly but when he was on, best slider of that era outside of Carlton. My opinion of course. Hey did anyone else tap the rubber playing whiffle ball like Blass did? Ellis did a little too for you whiffle ballers.

We all did the Kirk Gibson home run trot or the Tony Pena batter's box routine.

There was a motion Clemente always did where he would yank his neck (reportedly attributable to a chronic pinched nerve) before settling into the batter's box. Right handed batters used to all imitate that. Left handers would imitate Stargell's windmill motion.

Yes he will be missed. I hope wehner retires too, he is knowledgable, but really boring, not looking forward to hearing him At away games and after this year, home Games as well. Ouch!

I remember him at my high school in the early 80s selling Jostens class rings.

I went to his baseball camp in the early 80’s and really got a lot out of it. Was a great instructor and good guy as well.

Ritchie Hebner used to pull at the back of his collar to pull his sleeves up when batting.

Missed 3 of the games that year because at my school, we were there to learn, not watch baseball. The games were over by the time we got home. Was very happy when they put the games on at night where we could see them.
Nutting will sell the team when the requirement to keep them in Pittsburgh expires. No one wants to buy the team and keep them here. The price will jump when the new owner knows he'll be able to move the team. These are the last years for Major League Baseball in Pittsburgh. The Portland Pirates, coming your way soon.

Why would he do that? He makes money hand over fist with the Pirates. Someone would have to offer him a truckload of money to sell the team, and even then it's unlikely that he does so. It is far, far more likely that he will own the team long enough to pass it on to his kids than that he will be looking to sell the team any time in the near or not so near future.

Has Portland started building its new stadium?

In a similar vein, the new Triple A stadium in Las Vegas isn’t even totally complete yet, but there are already talks about demolishing the Rio Hotel and building a domed baseball stadium there to house an MLB team.

Seems really stupid.
