We have a family reunion up in Pittsburgh this August we’re all of her family is from. Lived in Bethel Park when I was a kid. All of my side of the family lives there. We may stay in Greentree. We always go to Wholeys to get a fish sandwich where my Grandma worked. The strip is interesting. If we have time what is one thing that we should see it do?

Go to mt Washington.

^^^^^^^^^^^^
This. There is not an urban view anywhere in the USA to compare with the view of Pittsburgh from Mt. Washington. Take the incline to the top (the one that isn't at Station Square). It will take you to the part of Mt Washington near the TriMont building on Grandview Ave. The lookout at the edge there is glorious. So is the deck at Coal Hill Saloon right next to the incline station at the top

Finally, if the weather isn't great, the Monterrey Fish Grotto (formerly Christopher's) in the TriMont building is a great restaurant and if you're just up for a drink, the bar there offers a ridiculously great view of Pittsburgh. You can see upstream on the Allegheny and Mon rivers, and downstream to beyond Neville Island on the Ohio.

Fabulous

When was the last time you were in the Strip District?

Not only up on mt Washington, but under it too, travel the parkway 376. Through the fort Pitt tunnel. What a sight of downtown Pittsburgh. As you exit the tunnel. Awesome

If the weather's nice, go to Station Square and take a sight-seeing boat ride on the rivers. It's a nice experience, and they throw-in some Pittsburgh trivia as you go. Then after the boat ride, you can eat at one of several restaurants at Station Square, or board the incline and ride to the top of Mt. Washington and eat there - as described by others (above).

I’ve actually never gone on one of those boat rides, whether it’s the Clipper or those little tiki bars. Will definitely have to do that the next time we’re in town.

Cathedral of Learning. Most impressive display of architecture and craftsmanship in the northeast.

The only reason why I asked when was the last time he was in the Strip, while all the big hitters are still there, if you haven't been there for 10 years, or even 5 years, or hell, 2-3 years, it is incredible the amount of construction and change going on in the Strip and Lawrenceville. It is definitely just worth checking out, just even from a drive through.

Don't eat at Station Square unless you want a chain restaurant. The Gateway Clipper is a neat view of the city though for sure.

i always had a warm spot for station square, even as a little kid, loved the construction and look of the interior.. i know we are in the age of the death of the retail mall but i hope station square sticks around and the ground level remains stores/restaurants/bars.. maybe with the new condos being built there, they can put in something that will thrive with the people living there.

i haven't been down there in years but again, really hope station square sticks around and remains what we all know it as..

The Donzi barge is a distant memory today.

What are your interests? A couple of things that I would consider that are unique to Pittsburgh, fun and near Wholey's. The Andy Warhol Museum on the North Shore has Good Friday happy hours with drinks and 1/2 off admission to the pop art collection from the Pittsburgh native and others. At the other end of the Strip, near Lawrenceville, the Roberto Clemente Museum is in an old firehouse and features memorabilia from the Great One as well as a winery that shares the space.

since you are from Bethel Park maybe someday I will tell you the story of how I dominated the Hammer in a state playoff game back in 82'....

Well I hate to be the bearer of bad news but there is no more mall in Station Square anymore. It's supposed to be a UPMC training center although there are rumors they've backed out.

The only things left in the "mall" are Kiku, Buckheads, Homerun Harry's, Sam Thong's caricatures, Ducky Tours (closed indefinitely) and Carol's Confections.

I’m sure hearing that story would be the cherry on top of visit to town.
As amazing as it may seem, I may have embellished my dominance a bit...As I recall he jumped center, the ball tipped off my finger as it was to my side, he tipped ball forward, one dribble tomahawk dunk...of course our master coaches and scouts were concerned with their guard who would never be heard from again and we we told just to keep the clumsy black kid off the boards...Bethel Park by 3 in the end and the clumsy black kid probably had 25 with 15 boards...However, with all due respect to our scouts, Gilliam was a late bloomer...

I am too young to remember him in high school, but definitely remember him in the NBA. It is kind of funny that he doesn't get the same praise that some local sports stars do. Outside of Maravich (who never played here), I'd be hard pressed to name another local player with a better NBA career than Gilliam. I guess part of that has to do with him being a late bloomer (like you said), going away to UNLV and then Pittsburgh not being an NBA market while he played on teams that weren't usually in the playoffs or on TV Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

Three of the best local basketball stars who excelled in the NBA/ABA:

my older bro played on some of those bethel teams but he was a few years after Gilliam, 84(ish) so my earliest memories, i do not recall him but of course remember him from the Runnin Rebs and the NBA..
