I did and enjoyed the night of sports viewing. US is on to the Copa semifinals via their win vs Equador last night. Looks like they will be a bit short handed vs their presumed opponent of Messi and Argentina. However, Yedlin will be back, correct? How will the starting line up match up? Can't wait until Tuesday.

I kept an eye on the NBA game but watched the soccer match. Really entertaining game. Too bad we'll be down two players for Argentina (assuming that's who we play)

I watched it. I keep hearing how some people want to write-off Clint Dempsey, but he has that indefatigable ability to elevate his play in the bigger games.

I watched as well. The crowd in Seattle was really into the game with different cheers, and almost continuous noise. Big win, but Ecuador had the US under siege for much of the second half.

Not two, three. Jones, Wood and Bedoya.

The US is at least considering challenging Jones' red card and Wood's yellow, but even if they do they are very unlikely to win those challenges.

Yeah, I thought that we wilted in the second half - especially in the final 15 minutes or so. As my son said, "It looked like Ecuador had a continuous 'power play' that we were trying to defend against."

The American Outlaws is a great fan organization for soccer. A couple years ago, I watched a game down in Raleigh with a bunch of those guys, and they're a lot of fun. They even gather together in bars to watch games when they can't travel with the team. They're the crazies who do most of the cheering.

Incredible goal huh?

i didn't know you could challenge those. I don't like the disqualification for the next game simply by committing a couple fouls. A red card, such as the one Jones got, I can see having to sit the next game...even though it didn't look like he did much of anything at all. Could you imagine Lebron having to sit out game 7 due to a couple harmless fouls.

I didn't see the Woods foul as I was still trying to figure out what happened to Jones. I'd hate to lose him. He and Brooks were two of our best players last night. I'd hate to lose Jones too but he at least is replaceable in my opinion.

Agreed. The new rule now states any contact with an opposing players face while the ball is not in play will result in a red card. I don't think Jones was trying to hit the player, but stupid to put himself in that position.

Losing him and Wood will hurt against Argentina, assuming they beat Venezuela.

Did he make contact with his face? It looked negligible at best. Losing him for the rest of the game for that was bad. But to lose him for Argentina would be ridiculous.

Why write him off, he's still the go to scorer, who cares if he's 34 or whatever.

I watched it too. Disappointed that we will lose some guys for the next match.

I went to a Gold Cup game vs. Cuba last summer in Baltimore, USA won 6-0 and the biggest, loudest area was the AO section- I didn't get a chance to talk to any of them. So do those people travel all over? Because the games are everywhere? You always see the guy that dresses like Teddy Roosevelt in the stands. Do they live in the same place, you say they gather in bars.

I am sure some travel. But they have local chapters in most major cities. Even Pittsburgh has a local chapter, and we marched with them at the women's game last summer. They gathered at McFaddens Irish Pub by PNC and marched over to Heinz Field.

It was a graze if anything. He looked as though he was trying to console/get the player's attention rather than strike his face. Oh well, we'll see if they can appeal the call. Still, Jones knows better than to put himself in that situation.

I think this is a sport you have to grow up with to appreciate. As a kid I didn't know it existed. Which means I watched the bb game.

Some of those guys travel with the team, especially in the US. There are local chapters across the US (six in PA); they party with their fellow members locally and get together with other nearby chapters, too. There's a Pittsburgh chapter, but I don't know anything about them. Here's their national website, including links to their chapters and bars:

I was able to watch the first 20 or so, than the storm knocked out my dish. Eventually caught second half in nonHD. This was a huge win for the US, not just reaching the semifinal, but beating a legitimate team. Ecuador is a solid team, top 10 in world rankings. The game unfortunately got a little chippy, making for an interesting 10v 10 game. Ecuador pressed very hard but the US hung in there.

Sad to see some good players will be watching from the sidelines. Argentina will be a monstrous challenge.

I think every league has some sort of mechanism whereby you can challenge red and yellow cards. For the most part though they don't get overturned. For one to get overturned they have to either determine that the ref gave the card to the wrong person, for instance if replayed showed that Bradley hit the guy in the face and not Jones they could get the card overturned. Or if replay could determine that the card was clearly undeserved, for instance if the replay showed that Jones didn't make contact with the opponent, they could then rescind the card. But nothing like that happened in any of the cases. You might disagree with the calls or think that the calls were too harsh, but those calls were clearly in the referee's discretion.

By the way, fwiw the Jones' red card wasn't actually called by the referee. He didn't see it. It was either the linesman or the fourth official who told the ref Jones hit the player in the face.

Yikes I forgot about the third one. A win would be an upset for the ages I guess.

Watched the Pirates....

Somebody put me out of my misery...they could be the tipping point to follow soccer this year....
I did watch some English soccer last couple months. The "show " part of it wasn't bad I must admit.

Buccos win 98 games but decided this sb a bridge year...
To where?

It is turning into Bridge to Nowhere II

And if I recall didn't someone drive off Bridge to Nowhere I
Yikes

It's a long season so I'll endure but right now they are damn near unwatchable....

But keep us posted on that COPA , is that it?? Cause I'm going to take a peek.

You're coming around Paul! Actually, I don't expect you to fully convert to soccer, but it certainly has a place for most sports fans, especially in the summer when viewing choices start to thin out. When baseball is bad, it's nice to have something else to watch. International soccer is not the best soccer, especially the US National team, but patriotism kinda makes up for things. The Mario Lemieux of soccer awaits us on Tuesday night. It should be fun.

Regarding the Pirates, it's bad right now. That said, I reminded myself yesterday that this is exactly how I felt about the Penguins in December. Hopefully they can get healthy and get their pitching straightened out. However, even if they can get into a wildcard and win that coin flip of a game, the Cubs would await. Baseball economics suck. This Cubs team might be one for the ages. It's shows you what can happen when a big market does things right throughout their system and then has the money to spend on top of it. Wait til the trade deadline when they add Chapman to their bullpen and anyone else they want. Let's hope they put this thing away so early, kinda like the capitals did in the NHL and then they have a hard time flipping the switch back on.

I watched both. Both the soccer match and basketball. There hasn't been a decent game in the NBA Finals.

Also, I don't know how soccer has gotten so popular. I mean I like it, but hockey is such a better sport all around. It is the sport of kings.

I didnt watch a minute of either. I have zero interest in soccer and near zero interest in the NBA.

It's pretty sad that we are so weak at soccer. We're a nation of over 300 million, and have had generations of kids growing up playing the sport.

So true. More kids play US youth soccer than any other sport in this country. US Youth Soccer is the largest sports organization in the world. It's baffling that we struggle against nations the size of Ohio. I understand that soccer loses many youth to football, basketball, baseball and hockey. But plenty of elite athletes continue to play soccer into more advanced ages. There still ought to be enough elite players--even after the other major sports dilute the talent.

I watched the NBA because it's the best sport on TV.
Football is still the best sport on tv and the numbers bear that out.

Has the NBA overtaken MLB in tv viewership? I have to think it did. Is the NBA #2 behind football?

I am a huge Pens fan, but as far as tv viewing, if I was forced to watch a game between two teams that I care nothing about, I'd watch the NBA before the NHL. And I'd watch soccer before either of them.

In terms if nationwide appeal, sure you're rigt. From my own perspective though, the NBA is really the only league I follow regularly.

Agree mostly. I don't watch a ton of NBA but because Cavs have one of the top 5-7 players ever and GS is in line for the greatest season of all time I'm somewhat interested. To me soccer is super boring. To many guys on the field. It's like you have to enjoy watching guys workout then hope you didn't turn your head at the wrong time cause there's like 5 exciting moments in an entire game. Like watching the Indy 500 and waiting for a crash. Of course just an opinion.

Thank you. I'm not really a soccer guy, but I've started getting into the international competitions, and get frustrated when Joe Soccer fan is thrilled when we win one out of four matches in the WC.

It's pathetic when Joe Soccer fan gets thrilled we beat Ecuador, a country of what 16 million? We have at least 10-20 times the kids playing soccer.

On a side note, I was in Colombia last week, and it was amazing how excited people were for their game against CR. Every other person had their Jersey on, and they started blowing horns at 10 am

Never relate " best" with "most popular". American Idol, the Golden Girls and the A Team were amongst the best rated TV shows. Don't Worry Be Happy and other dreck like that are among the top selling singles. People are ****ing stupid, idiots and worthless. Really. They are. A lot are best served fertilizing the earth for the rest of us. So please don't take what some friggin jobless, fat hillbilly likes and equate it with quality.

Sorry for being so harsh.
I will watch the Chargers vs the 49ers on a Thursday night. I might even watch the whole thing. But I won't watch more than a couple minutes of the Kings vs the Sharks. I would also watch a large chunk of the Galaxy vs the Earthquakes. And I won't watch any of the Clippers vs the Warriors. This is all opinion and personal preference of course. But my original statement about football being the best sport on tv remains. It was made for it.

Well good for you. I think the NBA is a buncha fluff and hype and indicative of our superficial society.

Hah. That's a new one. And should I assume that fans of finish hockey reflect our society's backwards, knuckle dragging last?

Golden Girls was a revolutionary show that covered a lot of topics it's contemporaries were usually afraid to address. Don't knock it.
