OT: Who watched US MNT instead of NBA last night?

Football is still the best sport on tv and the numbers bear that out.

Has the NBA overtaken MLB in tv viewership? I have to think it did. Is the NBA #2 behind football?

I am a huge Pens fan, but as far as tv viewing, if I was forced to watch a game between two teams that I care nothing about, I'd watch the NBA before the NHL. And I'd watch soccer before either of them.

I'll guarantee MLB still beats NBA in local ratings, def not in national ratings

I am sure you are right about local Pittsburgh ratings, but I wouldn't be shocked if national ratings for the NBA finals were greater than the World Series.

Talking out my ass without any data to back it up, but I would assume the NBA finals easily beat the WS. Anywhere I've lived other than Pittsburgh the NBA is wildly popular.

I'm more of a "rooting interest" fan, my favorite basketball team is Pitt, NBA team I was a Bulls fan from the '70s on. So I rarely watch the NBA playoffs, like I never watch NHL playoffs after the Pens are eliminated, I did watch game 7 of the NBA Finals, because I decided I could root for Cleveland to finally win something. I can't get into sports to see "the very best fantastic athletes perform magic" If I don't care who wins, I can't pay attention! The COPA is something I can watch, because I absolutely can root for the USA.

I last watched a WS game in 2001, because I was at a bar where people where watching it. I do watch the NBA Finals sometimes.

That's well said. I have mentioned I am an avid International soccer fan (even women's) because I have a rooting interest when the US team plays. The EPL? I have no rooting interest. Now would I watch Spain/Germany in the Euro Champs? Yeah. Sure. Did I watch the NBA Game 7 over the Pirates last night? Sure. But it wasn't because it was "the best athletes in the world performing magic", it was because it was Game 7 and for a championship added by the curiosity if Cleveland was going to blow it or not.

Like I said, yes in college football I watch with great interest Pitt or whoever is playing PSU. But I can also sit back and enjoy tOSU/MSU or USC/Oregon or whatever games are on.

But in my opinion, it makes easier to watch with serious interest when you have a real rooting interest.

Depends on the market. Here, the Pens beat the Pirates and beats every NBA team except maybe Cleveland.
Are you saying the Pens may not beat the Cavs locally? The Pens are the #1-3 hockey market in the US depending on when the numbers are tallied. They consistently have tv ratings in the 20's and drew ratings in the 30's during the playoffs. Would the Cavs even draw a 1 or a 2 locally? I am thinking I have to be misunderstanding your post.

Of course they do, and it's not close, but in most markets with a MLB and NBA team, local MLB team generally gets better ratings

You are misunderstanding. He's saying the Pens local rating would be higher than any NBAs local rating in their local market.

He's wrong, as are you, when you say they were getting ratings in the 20s. According to sports business daily, this was the first time in six years Pens didn't first, they were second, with a 5.87 average.

There were 4 NBA teams that easily beat that, GS, SA, Cle, and OKC

Just a side note, they didn't have the Canadian team's ratings

Another note, according to Forbes, Pirates local rating was 8.33 last year, third behind KC and Stl, both with double digit ratings

Thanks for the clarification. When I mentioned pens ratings in the 20's and 30's, I was referencing playoff games. The Pens drew somewhere around a 35 in Pittsburgh for game 6 vs the Sharks (the Sharks drew and 8 or 9 in the Bay Area). By comparison, game 7 of the NBA in Cleveland drew in the high 40's. Both the Pens and Cavs are emmensly popular in their home markets. Cleveland was playing in a game 7 for a championship the city hasn't won in 55 years. My question is what else could people in Pittsburgh and Cleveland have been watching when their teams were playing for a championship? Both games were on a Sunday night, so maybe Game of Thrones??

Off subject, this is why Root sports is making a killing on Pirates games. The Pirate local tv contract is said to be around $20 million, while the Cards have a $1 billion contract.

Since I had to google to see what the hell US MNT was you can guess....

Yes, US soccer is growing in popularity, kids are playing it more now than ever. If you recall the USMNT in the 94 WC, it was an ugly ugly team. The men of today light years better in all facets of the game.

But the US soccer structure is still playing catchup to the world. We are getting there, and it's thanks to the investment of the MLS teams into academy structures starting to resemble what happens in Europe. We are starting to develop better coaches, we are starting to create reasonable soccer professionally, and we are starting to consider forgetting college as a must have for kids.

In Europe, kids are identified early on, and groomed to be professional soccer players, not college athletes. It's also less political in Europe. They find kids, rich or poor, and invest in them from young ages on up. It's a different mentality and a different process. But it is getting better here.

Is there any reason to like Alexi Lalas. I never liked him. He may have been the one guy I couldn't stand in the 90s as a player, and dislike him even more now as a commentator. Sure he played professionally, but you know all the other foreign commentators make fun of him for being a douchebag.

Lalas is a douche. But his douchery ways led to an occasional good jab from time to time. Like the Landon Donovan/Abby Wambach tweet. It was absolutely priceless. http://www.sportingnews.com/soccer/...ens-world-cup-2015/1tl7xrk914mqp1a5cfe3zk4d6v

You are. I meant of the local cable ratings, the Pens have a better local cable rating than every MLB team on cable and every NBA team except maybe the Cavs. This is local ratings obviously, meaning the Pens in Pittsburgh and the Cavs in Cleveland, the Cards in St. Louis, etc...

Well; we don't have to worry about the U.S. Mens Team to win anything in our lifetimes.

They've won the Gold Cup and potentially they could win something like The COPA America, they might of gotten to the finals had they not run into Messi.

I realize Americans think they are better than they are, even when they suck, so winning the Gold Cup, which is basically a North American Championship, is pretty damn good and something to be proud of for a relatively crappy soccer country.

USA is #31 in the world, between Czech Republic and Algeria, deservedly so, coming in 3rd or 4th in a North/South American Cup losing to #1 Argentina in the semis is pretty decent as a result for a mediocre program that can't crack the top 25, sorta like Pitt basketball.

When you're watching USA soccer, you have to have the mindset of a Pitt fan, the expectation that a 10 win season or just making the NCAA tournament is usually the best you can hope for, maybe. Or you'll be disappointed. Pitt in NCAA football and basketball (CURRENT) is a good analogy for USA Soccer in FIFA.

are you comparing pitt football and pitt basketball to USA mens soccer? Dude, that is beyond depressing.. USA soccer isn't even in same conversation as the major powers, I mean, not even close.. people get excited over a win against Ecuador. there are more people in nyc than live in the entire country of Ecuador. Beating Ecuador in soccer is comparable to pitt basketball beating 4 pitt students and their high school sister who came along to watch at trees.. I think you are over exaggerating it here just to provoke a reaction

It is depressing. And just as you were right in comparing Clinton's West Wing to Zelda's in another thread, Pitt78 is probably right in his comparison of the USMNT to Pitt.

pitt football and basketball are not blue bloods or whatever the equivalent is in football but they are in the conversation.. Kids aren't wearing script hats in texas but they know who pitt is. I'd put Pitt in the very bottom of the first top 3rd, meaning you break all D1 progams down into 3 groups, pitt is in the first (albeit at the end). Without a doubt in the top 1/2, no debate whatso ever. Are you telling me USA mens soccer is in the top 3rd of all national teams? Not even close..

Well yeah, Pitt is pretty much the same in recent years. For maybe 6-7 years, they where top 10, maybe comparable to Columbia or England in soccer as a basketball program. Pitt is very much like USA soccer, I think Pitt would be lucky to be ranked 31st in any major sport right now. Are they?

Pitt Football & Basketball isn't even in same conversation as the major powers, I mean, not even close... is a valid statement. Winning the ACC Coastal would be like winning the Gold Cup against Mexico, Jamaica and Panama. And they haven't even done that.

im far from a soccer expert just find it weird that we cant compete with resort islands posing as countries. just don't see the comparison between pitt hoops going .500% in the acc and usa mens soccer inability to compete with an island that has less inhabitants than the Cleveland metro area..

Why do we suck so bad. Makes no sense.

Why does England suck so bad in European basketball? Why does India suck so bad in everything? Who knows? USA is 31st in soccer, China is 84th. Having more people isn't the only factor.

an interesting topic.. I stand corrected on the rankings, you've proven me wrong. Hey, not a huge soccer fan but I did watch it yesterday, always rooting for the stars and stripes.. I can't for the life of me figure out why we aren't a major player or why there is such a large gap between us and the top countries. Obvious answer is youth developmental leagues but we do well in womens.. is our female youth developmental leagues that far ahead of boys developmental leagues?

who knows, maybe these 3rd world countries in the middle of the rain forest don't yet recognize women as human beings so they don't let them play sports til they are grown up.

Yeah. It's a cultural thing. We got a head start on other countries with our women. Others are catching up and have caught us. Most countries don't care about women's soccer. Personally I love it but I know it's place in the world. Just like I know that no one cares that our Pens just won a Stanley cup.

Exactly, all the "women's lib" is mostly in America, in most of the world people don't buy into that stuff. Even many girls themselves in many countries choose not to play sports because that's not a "girl thing" to do. That's why we dominate the woman's game, because we are really the only country that really tries hard. My 9 year old niece who lives in Greece, in Athens, the capital city of over 5 million people, came and visited and was so jealous when she saw my daughter's games, she wished she could play, in Athens, the capital city of over 5 million people, they had no girls league she could join, none, she said a few girls played on the boys teams, but not many and they usually quit! She was actually lobbying her parents to stay here so she could play soccer, LOL! USWNT dominates world women's soccer because nobody else, or very few, are really trying at all. Our female youth development leagues for girls are better than most countries just for existing. and the boys and girls here in the USA, IMO are equal in development opportunities. My daughter is playing for her high school and for a travel team for the 1st time as she enters 10th grade, and at every level for every girls team, I see an equivilent boys team at the same age group.

The roots in this country are the same for men and women. The level of coaching is the same. However, We now have a DA (developmental academy) system on the boys side which is tied into US Soccer and boys enter the system, give up high school soccer, hypethetically has the best coaching, etc. US Soccer is looking to do the same on the girls side. These things take time but I think we will see dividends in about 10 years.

But we've had generations now, where we've had millions of kids playing soccer, yet we still suck.

I guess the problem is, most of the kids that play soccer are suburban white kids, who are mediocre athletes

And we aren't as advanced with the soccer academies like Europe

It might be that simple actually. All it would take is a couple elite athletes every few years to change the fortunes of an entire program. If soccer pulled from the same demographics as football, our perception and success might be entirely different. I mentioned the DA in my post above. I don't know what the cost is for players who are in the DA. But it costs at least 5-6K per year for kids to play soccer at the highest level in this country. If the DA changes the $ landscape, maybe we'd see more inner city Hispanics from LA who have a passion for soccer or low income kids from major cities and areas all over the country.

You'd think you can construct a top soccer club with a country of 330 million people. At least by mistake. Last night was deplorable; wilted like a flower after the first goal.
Winning the Gold Cup is very forgettable. Mexico should really be the only competition for the U.S. in that tournament. I see no progress in at least 20 years.

Maybe the USA is a small market country?
think we have less resources than Jamaica and Panama? I get why their young men grow up playing the sport, it's either that or carrying golf clubs for tourists at the resort hotel. Makes sense, it's their only real option outside of cutting down sugar canes...
