OT: Why I’m pulling for Cincinnati today

neutral site playoff games is an AWFUL idea. it is what makes playoff games so great in the nfl. i have no idea the format of playoff games in college once it goes to 12 games but I'd love for the first rd. games to be at the higher seed's home place. that would be awesome..

I agree, I've been to non-Steelers NFL games, but only because I lived nearby at the time. I lived in Cleveland for a year in the 80s and went to a Browns MNF Game, and I live in Maryland now and have friends who are Ravens season ticket holders, so I've been to 2-3 Ravens games not including the Steelers. But no, I can't imagine traveling to another city, paying big money for travel and hotel and tickets, to watch to random teams. But who knows, maybe there's a market for it?

I went to an Indians/Orioles game, but that is the extent of my non-partisan attendance statistics. A lot of the people who go to baseball games treat it like a picnic and/or day at the museum (if visiting a new ballpark) anyway, so I barely felt out of place.

i went to an O's vs Yanks game in camden yards years ago and honestly had a yankee hat on not even realizing it. i mean, i could care less about the yankees, just liked the hat cause it was one of a few that fit my big ugly head..

Had O's fans yelling at me and im like, "Dude, im a freakin Pirates fan, we suck, leave me alone."

Don't they also have like 75 picks in the first two rounds this year? I imagine they have some contracts expiring, but that should be a good way to fill those spots.

They were so much better than us that it really wasn't funny. That's why I hate people using what we did against a streak of absolutely terrible teams down the stretch as any sort of validation for anything. We just cared more than the other bad teams we played - that's about it.

Yep, they are pretty well set for the long term. Helps when you’ve got solid ownership and a really great GM.

Time will talk with the Steelers next season how much they actually improved. I’m with you, I think they are better but hard to gauge against the bottom half of the NFL. They found a good formula again but squeaking out wins against teams like the Colts and the NFC South isn’t the ultimate test.

When I went to those games, I didn't wear Steelers gear, I didn't feel like "representing" so to speak. I just wanted to fly under the radar and not act too excited when the home team was doing badly.

took the better half to a steeler / raven game one time in baltimore, we had on steeler gear. was last game of season on new years' eve i think. We had playoffs locked, they sucked. Was miserable experience. had guys wanting to fight me before i was even out of my car.. dude blasted me with a snowball that i took right to the face before my door was even shut..

im like "f*ck man, can i close my door first?" just an awful idea to go to an away nfl game rooting for your team. and i was with a woman and no buddies so even if i wanted to get into it with them, i had no one to help. Talk about 2 rookie mistakes. Take the girl with you to an away game and sport your teams' gear who is also a rival.

i should have done what you said, not worn either team and not cheered when we won..

I've been living in Baltimore and been to dozens of O's games, 3 vs. the Pirates since the 90s. But baseball isn't football, Pirates and O's are bad teams now and not really rivals anymore.

But who wants these tickets? Let's say Bills vs Chiefs in Atlanta? Who's going? Bills and Chiefs fans on one weeks' notice? Local Atlanta people? I wouldn't go to a game between teams that aren't my team unless maybe the tickets where cheap, even then, I don't care that much.
Right.

I went to the first six Steelers and Ravens games in Baltimore, and wore Steelers gear every time. I haven't gone since 2002, just because it's too much BS like you mentioned, and back then I used to go on a bus trip with like 100 Steelers fans with a club that doesn't exist anymore. It wasn't as bad being with a big group.

Pretty much describing why I probably won't be going to Morgantown this year. Unless I make like 3+ friends who are Pitt fans and at least 225 pounds between now and then.

yep, leave the wifey and kids at home and bring a couple buddies.

I only went there once. It was myself, my ex, and another couple. Just not a good business decision for me. I'm a hothead at times, and those fans like to prod and live up to the stereotypes. I'd probably rather just watch on tv than have to have my head on a swivel. And I don't care what anybody says about those people; they are not the same as other fan bases. I'm sure like 30% of them are fine and even use silverware to eat, but the other 70% are cavemen and cavewomen.

I'd like to see Cincy win just for the fact they haven't won a SB. Get Cal and Tyler a ring. H2P

Jalen Hurts is playing at another level this year. He’s in that top echelon and got there in a hurry. I can remember all of the doubters when Pederson started playing him over Wentz. Looks pretty good now.

Amazing how quickly that franchise turned it around. I can remember how bad they looked a few years ago with a bad line, terrible clubhouse cancer in QB, no running game to speak of, aging defense, etc… They were worse off that the Steelers ever were over the last several seasons. Which is why Tomlins seat has to start getting pretty warm if they don’t make a big improvement next year and make the playoffs. But it would probably take much more for his seat to get even a little bit warm given ownership seems to value consistency over all else.
Jalen Hurts is definitely a difference maker for the Eagles.

As far as Eagles vs Steelers, good article on Steelers Now currently comparing the two over the last 20+ years, primarily the Steelers practice of long-tenured HCs vs the Eagles cycling through HCs every 4 years or so. Bottom line, success can be had both ways….of course that conclusion depending on what is considered success.

In Super Bowl XL in Detroit, Jim Kelly, his brother and HS coach were at our tailgate party eating and drinking with us.
VT game of 03, we had a big tailgate in those years, dozens of people … Dan Marino hung out briefly with us as he moved through the 7c lot coming from the old Clark Bar towards the stadium . He stayed long enough for at least one beer with us (though I’d had a number of my own to recall exactly how long for sure). For one of my buddies who was there (not even all that big a Pitt fan, just there for the party), DM was/is his absolute favorite athlete of all time, so this still ranks as one of the greatest moments of life for him.

IIRC, Jim Kelly is from the Ford City/Kittanning area. Joe Paterno recruited him as a linebacker!
i watched a 30 minute show on him on the NFL network and he talks about his recruitment. it was pretty good. yes, PSU wanted him at LB and Pitt in his words told him that they found "their guy.". so he asked his brother if he should go to psu and his bro basically told him that QBs get hot chicks so that's why he went to Miami..

IDK ... conference championship game?

One week turn around.

Think people are going going to fill a stadium a thousand or more miles away from each to watch Cincy / KC?
Of course. They would give 20,000 tickets to each team and the rest to either corporate sponsors and people in the home city.

I just think it is a horrible idea. The local officials from the 24-25 cities that will never get a game need to get together and oppose this. Remember, these NFL teams will come knocking on the doors of local officials for hand outs when renovations or new stadiums are needed.

Who would have been the same year as him? Marino? If so, then you can't really say Pitt got that wrong.

Belatedly, you make a really good point concerning justifications that are given for local and state governments to subsidize new stadiums in north and Rust belt cities. To have even the admittedly no guaranteed prospect of big conference championship games hosted there someday definitely takes away some luster for the local entities to fund it. It even does the same for prospective private investors.

It’s frankly already dubious that the championship of the sport gets played in a neutral, sanitized, spot often no where near the cities of either participant. It’s ok in some aspects, great pageantry etc but it sometimes seems closer to College bowl than the ultimate game of the sport. There should be some incentive for teams (and their cities) to strive to get home field advantage and to host the championship game.
