It took Pat Chambers 9 seasons to make the NCAAT. They are lucky this year in that their star player chose to return when he had other professional options and he, along with another key four-year contributor, have provided the experience factor, which is a key facet to their success. I give him credit for taking advantage of Pitt's inability to recruit Philadelphia, as they previous did, at the end of Jamie's tenure.

If it takes Jeff Capel more than 4 years to make the NCAAT, he'll be gone, so let's hope he doesn't follow in Pat Chambers footsteps one iota.

That's my thing. PSU becomes a local basketball team once a decade when they are good. Even look at women's volleyball. When they were winning NC's, they were local. Now that they slipped just a little, the local media doesn't cover them at all

Yes, they're very fickle covering sports and have blinders on to certain teams that are relatively close to Pittsburgh and their coverage of that team (thinking of WVU). WVU is a dark horse to make the Final 4 this year, and they should be getting better coverage in the P-G than they do. But again, the P-G shows their true colors and prejudices.

I don't remember a lot of fuss about Chambers. If I was a betting person, I would bet a ton of money that Pitt will have a much better record than PSU in hoops over the next decade, and the next and the next.

I will say, I have a lot of PSU friends, and they are jealous of the fan support Pitt gets in hoops, and they hate the lack of interest in basketball on the PSU campus. I know fan support at Pitt has been hurt by the prior coaching regime, but the Zoo is beginning to rock again. as this team improves, we have on e of the best student sections in the country.

Chambers is a tool.Penn State had a sweet 16 team 20 years ago too. Let's see how good they are when Stevens and Watkins are gone next year. Chambers caught lightning in a bottle with 2 seniors sticking around. He has generally sucked as a coach up to now.

they are now up to #9 in the nation, their highest ranking ever. Good for them. Everyone should have a good team once every other decade.

PissU is irrelevant, especially in basketball. I don't care what they do. I've never seen them play and I don't know their record or anything about them, other than what I read on here. Which BTW is also irrelevant since this is a Pitt board.

If they're having a good year this year, it will be one good year in the last 20 or so, and none to follow for the next 20 years. That's not a good program.

Weird as hell that someone named PittFamily is concern trolling on behalf of PSU.

Pat Chambers has been at Penn State for 9 years and this will be the first time he's made the tournament in the worst year for college basketball that I can remember. He's not a good coach and I would never take him at Pitt. Nobody at Pitt would pony up $40k each for Stevens and Carr. Mike Watkins would have been kicked off the team if he pulled the same shit he did at Penn State where there's no accountability for poor behavior.

We are in a different state, and more importantly, State Penn is a state school.....although Pitt seems a lot like Cincy. Cleveland may as well be Columbus in terms of massive support for Ohio St. Cincinnati is not a big Ohio St city, despite being 3rd largest city in state. Cincy way more KY than OH. Their residents would agree.

I hate the Nitters.
I didn't even know they were ranked until I saw it in the paper on Sunday and the big story about Chambers.
But do remember some of the "talking heads" in the basketball forum saying he's a terrible coach.

Recruiting basketball players to a cow pasture isn't easy and I get tired of the basketball " talking heads" on this site trying to convince everyone that its hard to recruit basketball players to Pittsburgh.
Its not!
Pittsburgh is one of the best regional cities in the East and basketball players like nice cities as opposed to cow pastures and woods.
We just haven't ever had a great coach or a great recruiter!
