Sorry for the poor post title, I was afraid "offensive" could have multiple meanings...
Today I started thinking about our coaches on the offensive side of the ball.
Whipple. Powell. Salem. Borbely. Beatty.
I really don't mean to be a jerk here or sound ageist, but it is basically 3 coaches who are ~60+ years old and 2 around 50 (Powell & Beatty). I am all for having an elder statesman or two around to provide wisdom to young coaches. But if we wonder why our recruiting on that side of the ball is subpar or why we are not innovative - I think your answer is right there.
I mean honestly, watching some of the interview videos even as a 43 year old I couldn't imagine being in the meeting room. Whipple probably just getting mad and yelling at people. Powell doing the "these young bucks have to earn their opportunities, they way we did when I was a kid" thing. Salem cracking jokes to make up for a very sad TE situation. Borbs I don't even know. Beatty I am assuming is the best of the bunch but who the heck knows.
I think all of them are "fine". But I don't see "outstanding" and I don't see anyone in that room who leans forward and says "let's be great...here are some ways to get there...". Energy is contagious. We needs some youth, some energy and some outside the box thinking from the offensive coaches...and it can't just be one younger guy who is immediately overruled by the "experienced" guys.
P.S. I am sure you can find staffs that are also old...I am not saying we are the only ones. Just saying we are not very good on that side and I think it is a contributing factor.
