I came across this 4-year old article about Pitt's non-conference scheduling written for Fansided by Brett Tunno, who is no dummy as he is a post-doctoral fellow at Pitt. The article is titled, "Pitt Football Needs To Get Serious About Non-Conference Scheduling" and can be found at this link:

From the article:
But the most important question on my mind is this:
  • Why is Pitt hosting the Akron Zips at Heinz Field for the fourth non-conference game in preparation for the ACC stretch? What do our Panthers gain by playing Akron?
Interesting the thinking then compared to what many think now and it was only four years ago.

So the next few years Pederson scheduled Penn State and Okie State in successive weeks and we went 1-3 in those games. Somewhere in the middle is the best course. What good is scheduling these type of teams if we lose three out of four games to the better ranked teams. Its okay for Alabama to schedule Mercer and the Citadel and Penn State to play Coastal Carolina and Idaho but Pitt can't do it. Yea - I get it. Syracuse lost the -lets play tough ooc opponents, lose to them and still not draw and in its place they have begun to schedule down which this year resulted in a 10 win season, a nice bowl destination , a national ranking and renewed respect of a long dormant program.

Sadly, the reality of today's game is that it's detrimental to your program to schedule too many strong opponents. Perception is more important than reality. Going 3-2 against good teams counts for less than going 5-0 against weak teams.

The perception problem is media driven and the media are the people who know the least about who's the best team. News is made when a top ( 12-0) team wins or a cinderella sneaks in somehow. Discussing the middle of the pack teams makes for boring sports news.
The same holds for the top programs d1/p5 since the media is always looking for that perfect record to spend time on rather than explain how a 10-2 or 11-1 team is better than the 12-0 team due to strength of schedule.

The proof is in the pudding. If strength of schedule mattered, then about a third of the teams in the Top 25 wouldn’t be ranked. What matters is wins. You can’t do anything about your conference schedule, but you are in complete control of out of conference.

Steps:

- Schedule winnable games
- Win winnable games
- Get into the top 25
- See more interest from better recruits.

We can’t even get past step one....

This "article" was literally an opinion piece by a fan-boy graduate student. You could easily dig up a terrible thread on this board about scheduling and have the same "insight" as this and it wouldn't look nearly as silly.

He said it was interesting not the gospel of Jesus. Some think being a member of the irritating message board contrarian police is silly.

Love this thinking...

Pitt continues to flirt with cupcake danger, and I don’t know if Pederson will ever change his philosophy. We continue to schedule weaker opponents, and Pitt plays them with little to no motivation. Looking back at previous years, Pitt has embarrassed itself against Youngstown State, Toledo, Ohio, Bowling Green, and now Akron. Pederson wants to schedule everyone in Ohio except Ohio State.

Do you think that potential Pitt recruits want to play for a squad who schedules minor-league Ohio teams and manages to lose to them? If I were a four- or five-star recruit, I’d probably bypass Pitt and look towards teams who want to compete at the highest level.

Imagine how much further ahead Pitt would be right now if only they had the motivation of playing Ohio State instead of Akron that day. I mean if they couldn't beat Akron, logically they would have pounded the Buckeyes, right? We all remember how motivated they were in the infamous 72-0 loss in Columbus, and the recruiting bonanza that followed that glorious day.

that is the blueprint most teams follow- an FCS, a MAC, a CUSA and a brand name. We also play at Florida State that year in the crossover . Hey maybe we can actually win nine games that season !
