Penn St still has the most overrated, underachieving, overpaid head football coach in the nation. So they also have that in their corner.

WE ARE 7-5!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’ve been reading variations of this same headline for a half dozen years now. Why do the Peds still suck?
Chambers was killing it (by PSU standards). Won an NIT and would have had a decent seed in the 2020 NCAAT. He was recruiting very well. He could do it but Dixon and Capel couldn't. Had Stevens committed to Dixon instead of Chambers, Dixon might still be here. I have no idea what Shrewsbury is doing but anyone is better than Capel. Capel may be the worst recruiter in college basketball

Penn State basketball has a limited ceiling, but I think Shrewsbury is going to raise their floor. That team last year won a lot more games than they should have (yes, I know they still had a losing year) and I like the staff he put together.

Pat Chambers was cheating his ass off and was the worst kept secret in the Philly basketball scene. If you get a chance go to Tony Carr’s IG page and scroll back and see when he suddenly got a brand new Tahoe. There’s also a reason Stevens suddenly cancelled his visit to Pitt the day of. The NCAA has been to State College to investigate, but to Chambers credit he’s kept no trail.

but Chambers was just an awful coach and to be honest not well liked by a lot of people outside of the “incidents” he had. Son of his longtime assistant since his BU days, St Joe’s star Ryan Daly tweeted “Karma” or something like that when Chambers got canned a year and a half ago.

You have to cheat. It got him to the NCAAT if not for Covid.

Not nearly enough.
Pitt did whatever it took to win the national championship in 76 in Fb and to recruit players Smith , Lane , Gore and Shorter in the early 80’s to the bb program . That’s not how they operate now .

I‘m sure just about every school violates some obscure rule , but trying to win championships takes a lot effort by everyone involved . ( administration, coaches and boosters ) Pitt isn’t all in .

I remember when I thought the cheaters were 'bad'. There was an interview many years ago with Calipari where he basically said he doesn't think it's a big deal if a kid and/or his family get a bag of money. That it isn't a real crime just breaking NCAA rules, those aren't laws. Calipari chose his words carefully but this was sentiment and it swayed me. If I was a player from a poor background and could get $50k to help my family, why would I care about the NCAA's rules?

Chambers killing it "lately" in recruiting, I find to be an unimpressive barometer. 1) Compared to Pitt, there are many schools who have fared better. 2) What does their record say other than they had a competitive basketball program. The only thing I care less about than PSU Football is PSU Basketball.

You know Chambers was fired a year ago, right?

You not caring less about PSU basketball is probably why you don’t know that Chambers hasn’t been at Penn State since 2020. They hired Purdue’s top assistant who drew on those ties to grab some kids that Purdue had recruited for the 2022 class, and they got Cam Wynter from Drexel and a kid from Bucknell out of the transfer portal.

Largely, though, despite having some assistants with east coast ties, it seems like their recruiting is going a little more midwestern than it did with Chambers. Which makes sense given the conference they’re in.

Should the thread title be "Penn State destroying Capel IN recruiting", rather than AND ?

Otherwise, enough about their recruiting. We need to know how they are destroying Capel, many of Pitt's fans would like to help.

everyone is destroying us in recruiting, we dont have any high school recruits signed in '22. two guys in '21, one i've never heard of and the other one played sparingly and is rumored to be leaving.

dont single out penn state here when it's everyone that is destroying us on the recruiting trail.

The problem really is that this isn’t new at all. Recall by the end that Dixon was losing recruits to mighty powerhouses like Fordham.

Fire the current guy, fire the next five guys (all the while increasing time and money wasted on more buyouts and higher salaries that replacements will demand, all the while watching fans (and revenue) disappear.

This ridiculous utopian principle of “clean hands, zero wins, zero attendance”? Pitt’s hands are dirty already anyway. The best player was an admitted car thief (who stole the car of another student!).

Any coach is going to fare the same way until Pitt acquiesces to how college basketball works right now, and plays it the same way. “We’ll never be able to pay players more than the blue bloods.” Blue bloods???? How about more than the Fordhams first?

None of this is a surprise at all. The only mystery right now is how Pitt is able to hold its own in football. I guess the pervasiveness of the filth isn’t as complete in football (yet). There aren’t traveling “schools” of midget league football teams like there are in basketball that corrupt the process while preteens. That and with greater number of players it’s harder to put bags in everyone’s hands. Or it’s just a temporary reprieve, so we better enjoy it while we can?
