Penn State was preparing for the TaxSlayer Bowl on Dec. 16 when James Franklin was asked about the possibility that Brent Pry could leave his staff to become Georgia Southern's head coach.
At the time, Franklin had already made one staffing move since the regular season ended by firing John Donovan and replacing him with Joe Moorhead. But this staff change would have been by choice, not force.
"I want my guys to get the opportunity to be head coaches," Franklin said. "I don't want them to ever leave for lateral moves, and the administration has been very supportive to help us keep the staff intact.
As it turns out, though, Pry stayed, and is now Penn State's defensive coordinator after serving under Franklin for five seasons as co-defensive coordinator and assistant head coach at Vanderbilt and with the Lions.
The problem, though, is that two Lions' assistants have now left, and both made the lateral moves Franklin didn't want to see.
Bob Shoop left his job as Penn State's defensive coordinator on Saturday to take the same job at Tennessee, and on Monday, long rumored speculation was finally put to rest as Auburn confirmed that it has hired Penn State offensive line coach Herb Hand for the same job with the Tigers.
"My family and I are extremely excited to join the Auburn football family and be a part of a program with such great tradition and history," Hand said in a released statement. "We're especially excited to rejoin Coach Malzahn and work with him again. "It was an opportunity that was way too good for us to pass up. I want to thank Coach James Franklin and the Penn State football program for two great years and I wish them nothing but the best moving forward."
Hand and Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn's relationship goes back to 2007 and 2008, when the pair worked together on the offensive staff at Tulsa. It was not immediately clear why Hand wanted to leave Penn State and reunite with Malzahn, but their longstanding relationship is certainly one reason.
He will replace J.B. Grimes, the now former Tigers' offensive line coach who left the program on Monday to take the same job at Cincinnati.
Penn State has not released a statement regarding the hiring.
Franklin will need to hire a new offensive line coach and a new safeties coach before spring practice begins, and the sooner the better with National Signing Day on the horizon on Feb. 3. Neither departure is expected to have a significant impact on the verbal commitments in the class of 2016, however Hand was vital in securing commitments from four offensive linemen in this cycle.
