Penn State was preparing for the TaxSlayer Bowl on Dec. 16 when James Franklin was asked about the possibility that Brent Pry could leave his staff to become Georgia Southern's head coach.

At the time, Franklin had already made one staffing move since the regular season ended by firing John Donovan and replacing him with Joe Moorhead. But this staff change would have been by choice, not force.

"I want my guys to get the opportunity to be head coaches," Franklin said. "I don't want them to ever leave for lateral moves, and the administration has been very supportive to help us keep the staff intact.

As it turns out, though, Pry stayed, and is now Penn State's defensive coordinator after serving under Franklin for five seasons as co-defensive coordinator and assistant head coach at Vanderbilt and with the Lions.

The problem, though, is that two Lions' assistants have now left, and both made the lateral moves Franklin didn't want to see.

Bob Shoop left his job as Penn State's defensive coordinator on Saturday to take the same job at Tennessee, and on Monday, long rumored speculation was finally put to rest as Auburn confirmed that it has hired Penn State offensive line coach Herb Hand for the same job with the Tigers.

"My family and I are extremely excited to join the Auburn football family and be a part of a program with such great tradition and history," Hand said in a released statement. "We're especially excited to rejoin Coach Malzahn and work with him again. "It was an opportunity that was way too good for us to pass up. I want to thank Coach James Franklin and the Penn State football program for two great years and I wish them nothing but the best moving forward."

Hand and Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn's relationship goes back to 2007 and 2008, when the pair worked together on the offensive staff at Tulsa. It was not immediately clear why Hand wanted to leave Penn State and reunite with Malzahn, but their longstanding relationship is certainly one reason.

He will replace J.B. Grimes, the now former Tigers' offensive line coach who left the program on Monday to take the same job at Cincinnati.

Penn State has not released a statement regarding the hiring.

Franklin will need to hire a new offensive line coach and a new safeties coach before spring practice begins, and the sooner the better with National Signing Day on the horizon on Feb. 3. Neither departure is expected to have a significant impact on the verbal commitments in the class of 2016, however Hand was vital in securing commitments from four offensive linemen in this cycle.

People leave jobs for reasons. The older you are, ostensibly the more mature your reasoning. Usually, lateral moves are made for family reasons, convenience, job security and logistical ease.
Whatever the reason, the job that is left behind was not good enough to override those "soft" issues. The one conclusion I can reasonably make is that Franklin (and therefore Penn State) is not suffiently appealing to keep good people in place because they don't see a future bright enough to stay.

When the future of a program is in disarray the assistants start to look and look quickly.
I would not be surprised to see one or two more assistants bail on jimbob.

The Coaches themselves are saying that with nothing but silence from Franklin that earlier said he wants his Coaches to get Head Coaching jobs but not Lateral moves?

This is a direct contradiction and another inconsistent statement in face of the facts, not one but two did leave for lateral moves?

Penn State University not even acknowledging these Coaches dedicated their careers to Franklin or Penn State is just another sign of classless pouting.

At the same time, Former Recruits & Players are sending these Coaches congratulations and well wishes unlike Franklin or Penn State?

Why a Head Coach or University would doisplay that kind of behavior is just an example of why these Great Coaches that were called a Long Time Loyal Coaching Staff may be leaving and should be a warning to Recruits and Players too!

meanwhile compare that to how Pitt Chancellor Gallagher, A.D. Barnes and Coach Pat Narduzzi publicly stated they tried to keep OC Coach Chaney but in the end wish him well and nothing but success, and thanked him for his year at Pitt!

Franklin and Penn State prefers to be petty and Pitt prefers to be proud!

Where do you want to go and associate for your future? Smart People Would Say Not Penn State Right Now! Major difference in behavior and shame for Penn State!

Three years ago Mr. Bill bolted Sappy Valley. Now Mr. Hand. Oh NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
I keep pointing out the real problems at Penn state left over by a President and A.D. under charges and a Former Coach with a Halo on a mural with millions spent in correcting laws, rules and regulations all other Universities obeyed but him?

Coach Hand was much maligned for the poor play of the offensive line. If he is a bad coach, I just cannot see Auburn hiring him. Perhaps it was the talent level and not his coaching skills. Being as Frankie is blaming his assistants for all the problems, I would think that is jumping before the axe falls.

As I believe it was CAPT who said that a head coach can't fire himself so he has to fire his assistants when things go wrong. JimmyFrank's seat is getting really hot. So what quality assistant coach with other options is going to want to sign up to be the scapegoat for JimmyFrank's game day shortcomings?

And as TD said, JimmyFranks talks it up when things are going well, and is quiet when things turn sour. He will need to get a pair of white gloves because he is basically going to be a mime for the foreseeable future.
