Per Vuk's site/Saunders - MacVittie practicing w/2nd team

Wouldn't surprise me if we burn his redshirt if he can help us win a game. Canada loves mobile QBs that can throw.
He could be looking toward next year, too.

The way it stands now, Pitt's QB situation in 2017 is starting a kid with little or no experience. Pitt's (now) senior-dominiated O-line will be re-building, too. Next year's offense could be in a bad way unless they start taking steps to remedy it now.

Pitt has two SRs in their top 6 OL. O'Neil, Bookser, Officer and Jones-Smith will all be back and likely starting at OT, OT, C and G. I disagree with that comment.

Agree. Really you can say four starters are back on the O-line although it's really three. The unit shouldn't be a concern in 2017.

2 seniors on the OL this year. So they'll return 3 starters plus a quasi-starter in JJS. They should only have to plug in 1 real newbie next year on the OL. That's not bad at all.

Agree about the QB situation. They may want to get MacV some reps. At least significant practice reps if not live game reps. Would expect MacV and Bo to get long looks in the spring as the 1 and 2 going into next season.

Thanks for Posting. This is great to hear!

Peterman does a lot of things well. And I can see him getting better every game. On the other hand, MacVittie has all of the tools to be special and it's always good to see the heir apparent getting more reps in case something should happen to Peterman that would cause him to miss multiple games.

If Peterman gets hurt and has to come out for a few plays, and even if it turns into a series or two, I think they will go with Manny at QB. But if he gets more seriously hurt and will be out for the season, or even for a few games, they are going to play their best option. But who is that?
I know they like McV a lot. But is he ready now? Playing him with the second team for some period during practice helps them further evaluate his readiness.

One thing I noticed is when Narduzzi goes after recruits and says he will be prepared to start Players he means it, and that showed up with Whitehead last year. Hamlin would be starting if not hurt. Matthews has been put in Games, Watts & Camp too, and remember how much Narduzzi & Canada went Mac's House in UCincy and promised him he would get every opportunity play QB.

Narduzzi seems to be keeping his promises as I see it?

It did not help get Hudson or Jeter to stay or come to Pitt but it sure sends a sign to Lamont Wade, if he wants to play right away?

You burn the RS if the guy can help you win now.

The better news is, our future could be bright if a true freshman is getting looks now...
Conversely, it could just point out how deficient we really are now.

But by taking conflicting views, I have a better chance of being right.

Manny Stocker is a Gamer and playing Special Teams, too bad he did not come earlier to Pitt, at 6-2 and 215 he could be made into a good Linebacker, and many High School and later some CFB QBs have turned into good Linebackers!

MAC is a better choice for Back-Up now for next year, and wish Stocker could stay another, but his Brother is a DB at 6-2 and 185 and could grow at LB too is just a Sophomore?

Why play Stocker at QB if it is just another year. The Big MAC Attack needs Reps at practice!

In theory, yes. But an injury (or two) and we're struggling.

Do we know how the younger guys are progressing? Will they be seriously be challenging for playing time next year?

Keep your eye on who the 2nd OL unit is in the spring. That will tell you who is progressing and who they like. They also should only lose 2 starting OL after next year: AO and JJS.

Yes... That's why I said "It's always good to see the heir apparent getting more reps in case something should happen to Peterman that would cause him to miss multiple games.

And yes, in that case, BURN THE DAMN REDSHIRT. He's just a freshman. He'd still have three years of eligibility left.

Honestly, I think it's just a matter of getting the kid enough reps so he will be their best option, should Peterman sustain an injury that keeps him out for a game or more.

It would be nice to get some info on how some of the secord-year guys (Pilato and Paulina, to name two) are doing - and even some of the freshman, such as Justin Morgan and Bryce Hargrove.

Since no media see practice that is hard information to come by. Likely have to wait until spring.

I hope we aren't putting all our eggs in the MacVittie basket. He's a nice prospect but he played, what 5 or 6 varsity games in his career at QB? He has to be possibily the least experienced true freshman QB out there.

This could mean that he has leaped over DiNucci and if Peterman had an extended injury, he would get the call. However, for an in-game replacement, it will surely be Stocker.

I noticed at the ok st game he was wearing a knee brace. Have no idea if it was bc of an injury or preventative. Anybody?

Most of our offensive linemen wear them as a preventative measure and the QBs were all wearing them in training camp practices. So my guess would be that it's a continuation of preventative methods.

I would caution everyone wanting to burn his redshirt to please remember our receiving situation. It would be like taking your Chevette, and replacing only shell with a corvette but leaving the engine the same. May look better, but the performance wont be better.

We hung 42 and 38... MacVittie I think can add a phase to the run game. Peterman is not slow, and helps some as well... but come on, he isnt fast either. We have had much worst QB play than Peterman, and blowing a RS so MacVittie can run some read options and try to throw to covered receivers may be detrimental. I think if some of these guys emerge as legit threats, then burn the RS and get MacVittie some time to acclimate to the speed of the college game when we have time and a lead to do that.

MacVittie's redshirt will not be burned unless Peterman gets injured bad enough to miss 2+ games.

Narduzzi is building something here, and 2016 is not the end game.

Though if you think about these two statements you've made, they are rather contradictory.

If Narduzzi is truly building something and 2016 is not the end game, then it would seem to make more sense to give MacVittie (the presumed heir apparent at QB) some actual game day experience... even if Nate happened to be out for only one game.

Did Jackie Sherrill worry about burning a year of Dan Marino's eligibility his freshman year when Rick Tracano got hurt? No he didn't. He threw Marino in and let him get his feet wet.

None of us knows for sure if MacVittie will be a special player like Marino, but it wouldn't be smart for the coaches to Redshirt him and keep him and on the bench, if they thought he could play better than the other options at QB.

OK... that's a bad comparison if not just inaccurate. Marino played the first game of the 1979 season. Trocano was injured later in the season.

MacVittie must have corrected his accuracy issues. Word was out of Fall camp that he had issues staying consistent with his accuracy. They're playing for the coastal, same goal as it was at game 1...i would hate to throw in the towel now.

Good catch. Yes, I fumbled the ball with this bad comparison that didn't exactly explain my point. It does not in anyway change the point I was making. Sherrill in fact did put Dan in and let him get his feet wet his freshman year. He didn't say."Hmm, I think we should keep Dan as a back up for two seasons, watching other QBs and by that time he may be ready to go." All I am saying is that great coaches understand they need to get the players they think could shine in and see if they shine.

I really dont think you can compare MacVittie who started 5 games in high school to Dan Marino who started what, 3 years at CC?

I think MacV has the tools to be really good. I think if ANYONE on here thinks MacV comes in and throws for 400 yards and 3 TDs and expects that is going to be sorely upset. If he plays, at best, he will be a game manager this year as well.
