Peter's Pub

Never spent a ton of time in Peter's, but did hang a few times and always had fun. I remember one particular night getting extremely drunk there the night before I had to drive home for Thanksgiving vacation. Had to stop a few times on the PA turnpike to get sick. Wow! I think I even walked out of the bar holding a beer or drink in my hand. Oh, the good/crazy times in college.

Oh, and God bless Zelda's Greenhouse.

Its a shame to lose a contemporary tradition like Peters. Been there many times when in Pittsburgh for games at Pitt Stadium, Petersen Center, Three Rivers & Heinz Field. A good stop but not my favorite. Was always partial to Wolfharths Pub & Rudy's in days past (like when Forbes Field was still open!).

What’s it going to become?

And out of curiosity, what was the bad reputation assicoated with the “pink panther”.

Never got to Peter's Pub. It was after my time in Oakland assuming it opened in 1974. I was out of Oakland by early 1972 when I completed my M.S. I think I recall being in Wolfarths a tme or two, though. My favorite was Quinque's (pronounced Chi-Chi's) across from Forbes field. Terrific meatball subs (or, alternatively, you could have meatballs and provolone cheese in a bowl with a hunk of Italian bread on the side)--either washed down with bud long necks. He always knew when the LCB was going to raid and scooted all the underage out.

I have tried to recall the correct name for Chi Chi's for years . . . thanks for the reminder. Great underage bar for when I worked at Forbes Field. Dirty Edwards, Frankie Gustine's (both just below the towers on Forbes), Cum Laud, Pitt Tavern, Atwood Gardens were all decent Oakland hangouts that are now gone. One of my favorites was the old (but still operating) Wingreen Tavern at the corner of Greenfield Ave and Winterburn in Greenfield. Their big 15 cent drafts were tough to beat . . premium choices: Iron, Duquesne and Schmidts! And, being under 21 was not an issue.

The Golden Triangle in Swissvale with its Destroyer and Battleship subs. Still humming along.

I can't remember if it was Dirty Edwards or the Cum Laude that was a hole in the wall place directly below the Towers on Forbes. In any event, it was the bar that enabled me to pass an undergrad Physics final. I had something like "math anxiety" for Physics at that time. I knew the material but I would freeze up and my mind would go blank during exams during the semester and I was headed for an F in the course which I needed toward my B.S.. So, immediately before the final exam I went into that bar and drank two "Big Irons." Then I scored a strong B on the final and passed the course with a D. I really think I scored high enough to have made a C; but, I believe the prof must have assumed I cheated to score so high on the final.

In retrospect, I should have taken the beer approach to exams during the semester. I can't remember ever having such an incredible urge to drain my bladder as I had on exiting that Physics final--nearly wet my pants.

Hemingway's Pub/Cafe is a great one and hard to beat.

When the Holiday Inn was open we frequented Hemingway's alot taking our kids and their friends ( starving college students) out to eat and have a few drinks.

Great place after football, basketball or PENS games.

We now stay on the Northshore regardless of which event we're going to.
Tequilla Cowboy is the preferred watering hole.

Must have been Gustines' or Edwards. Cum Laude was between 5th and Forbes a few blocks toward downtown. Can't remember which street.

Must have been Edwards. It was definitely not Gustine's. It was far smaller and narrower. I remember it had window draperies and/or painted glass so you couldn't see inside from the sidewalk. Bar on the left with stools, booths on the right as you walked in.
