you, my good man, are a jagoff. your one of the reasons why daily public newspapers are failing. used to be -even if you had an opinion, as a professional journalist-you stopped short of attacking public institution-just because you personally disliked them. if you had legitimate negative information, that might affect the public, about public institution -you were duty bound to report it.

however, if just didn't like a public institution, you expressed it privately during your drinking club hours at"the old drinking clubbe ", where all those of your ilk guffawed at the misfortune of the great unwashed masses-and all "those little people out there in the dark". of course your a penn state grad-of course you went the finest journalism school penn state could offer, of course you sniff the air when your football team -oh never mind.your just a jagoff.

Pitt football fans

Speaking of being stuck in the past: Pitt football fans actually believe the program has tradition. Maybe 30 years ago it did. Its current tradition is a half-full Heinz Field for its games and a new head coach every other year. Maybe Pitt fans annoy me because I’m a Penn Stater, but maybe they do because they don’t live in reality. Do the Pitt sports-information people still claim to have nine national championships in football?

The fear emanating from Nitters is palpable. Garth is lashing out because he sees Pitt trending up and Pedo U free falling.

He sees it. It's as plain as day. But there is nothing he can do except watch helplessly so he lashes out in his irrelevant column in that irrelevant "newspaper".

Pretty pathetic - which makes him a perfect Nitter.

His email is dgarth@post-gazette.com. Most direct means of expressing your opinion.

This idiot should check himself in the cell with Jerry. St penn is a national embarrassment......

It is truly amazing how the local paper can be so abusive toward such a well respected university. I just have no understanding of this "phenomenon". It makes no sense. The quote in this thread by that writer is off the wall.

I'm sure he appreciates the free advertising you gave him.
Grow up.
Souf - this is a legitimate criticism. Could you imagine one of the sports editors openly admitting his disdain for Duke fans in the Herald Sun newspaper? It is completely unprofessional. I understand if it is the editorial page, but it is not.

I wonder what he wrote about………

Think of it as a compliment. The real truth is he hates Pitt fans because the only tradition his PoSU has is one of pedophilia. At least it is the only thing anyone outside of PoSU knows them for.

Man, is that infuriating - straight out of BWI. A PSU grad AND a cult member - now publishes their spew in a metropolitan newspaper. I feel tradition, and it is from my whole life and generations- how dare he mock that.

I actually laughed at this article. This is something you completely expect from a PSU fan. I can tell you multiple things from the writer based on his opinion and knowing he went to PSU.

(1) Definitely a white guy with absolutely no minority friends
(2) Grew up in a rural area of the country and probably lives in the suburbs outside of the city
(3) Prefers areas of the country with more cows than people, diversity, celebrations, and cultural events

Hence, why he went to Penn State.

Even an objective reading of his commentary (in its entirety, including but not limited to his Pitt fans comment) would conclude that the writer is a freaking misanthrope in general.

The Writer is more upset with the failures at Penn State and Fears the Successes at Pitt that Chancellor Gallagher and Coach Narduzzi is bringing to Pitt, and he decides to try hurt it before keeps growing?

None of those his Fears in him on Pitt will stop his Tears continuing within his Penn State?

I saw many letters like this in 1970s especially when Pitt won a National Championship before Paterno, and that was before Paterno brought great shame to Penn State University name?

Looks like History is repeating itself now that Pitt is on the rise in the ACC with Chancellor's Gallagher Vision and Coach Narduzzi Coaching & Recruiting!

As Penn State swallows less wins in the Big Ten while President Barron won't give his confidence to Coach Franklin by way of an Extension?

Everyone here knows what an assistant to the editor means i get coffee for the editor.

While I can understand the local media not playing the role of cheerleader however I do have a problem with the local disdain of Pitt what good does it do to insult one of the largest employers in Pittsburgh and a core of your readers

I will get slammed for this, but I actually think there is an interesting premise here about sports fans clinging to old traditions. I think, for example, it's silly totally brag about the 70s teams around recruits who weren't alive for those wins. His mistake was making this about Pitt. Fans are like this everywhere (See NCSU clinging to one NC in hoops from the 80s).

It is called history & tradition.

  • The past happened
  • The present is happening
  • The future has not happened yet

Great view by you, but others can differ, and all Universities and Organizations talk about History, Accomplishments, and Newspapers too! The Paper thought it was important to put it in and people are reacting to it, so that is ok with me too. What you just wrote is now as old as the premise you talked about, but so be that too. Penn State has done nothing either since 1986 and that supports your premise too, but was not published?

They won one in 1974, also.

Oh I'm definitely writing....make no mistake ....the irony of an admitted Nitter complaining about living in the past is just RICH....

Look at BWI....90% about restoring Paterno...10% split hating Pitt hating Harbaugh....

Exactly, and while many Penn State and some Pitt Fans hate seeing is that Pitt Greats like Dorsett, Marino, Jackson, Doleman, and Martin from the 1970s-80s should not count much since that is over 40-30-20 years old? Yet, when one points out Penn State and some other Programs have not been able to do that in their past, all of sudden History should not be counted?

Still, when names like Fitzgerald, Revis, McCoy, Lewis and Donald come up today and still playing in the NFL today that does not count either? Yet, again Penn State and some other Programs that have not produced the same type of high level caliber Players, that is to be ignored too?

Then if anyone brings up why Penn State University and Pennsylvania name was shamed by a Penn State Football Program Head Coach Fame of 409 Wins, that is OK and was a Victim of his slogan of Success with Honor?

Sorry all Football History, Traditions, & Scandals are part of that History, yesterday and today, and everyone can be proud of it, or ashamed of it, but cannot be erased!

LOL - aren't all traditions based on one's experiences ( as in: experiences from the past). The phrase 'current tradition' is an oxymoron.

Ummmm.....perhaps Penn State fans clinging to JoePa and his success with honor just might be clinging to the past. I dunno, maybe it is just me. I can't remember the last time they were that successful, let alone honorable.

Yeah, all waiting to bring back a statue of a dead guy that was removed for shaming Penn State Name and refuse to forget to mention that 409 had to clean up Showers where Children were abused another 14 Years because someone should have done more?

So, much the Legacy to get to 409, but shsshh, Pitt Fans cannot be proud of anything! While Penn State Fans cannot be ashamed of anything either!

It is always about great Teams Won by Coach Paterno with a Forgotten Nittany Liar Alumnus Convicted Felon by his side and without full compliance with Rules or Laws?

No one is allow to be proud about Pitt Teams & Players playing yesterday and today, all the while Penn State Slogans were not protecting Disadvantaged Children even when they knew about it????

Traditions cut both ways!

That is exactly how I feel. He is just repeating Paterno's jealousy when Pitt won the national title before he could. He is just doing what PoSU fans do when they know they are not as good as they think they are.

The article stunk from the very beginning, but once I read that the writer is a UPS grad, that explained a lot. When it comes to writing any references to Pitt, Nit writers have no credibility. I think they have an inferiority complex about all things related to Pittsburgh - and it's demonstrated when they feel the need to print something negative about Pitt in the hope that it makes themselves look better. (They even advertise how some of their branch campuses are near and around Pittsburgh - hoping that a Pittsburgh association would improve their image. And considering the many times that Pittsburgh has been named a "Most Livable City", why not give it a try?)

Bike lanes in the city? Why? Of course, why in the world would a Nit consider the possibility of needing a bike lane with all of those cow pastures that they're used to?

And as far as traditions, if you ask the average person what Penn State is best known for, you'll probably get a response related to the greatest scandal in the history of collegiate football - the sexual assault of little boys, and the failed attempt by their administration to cover it up. They even lied about their crime statistics when reporting to the feds. Google "Penn State" and you'll find links to stories related to the scandal; it's unavoidable.

I really think that the writer was trying to be funny, but as we all know, the Nits have no sense of humor - especially about anything "Pittsburgh". And they'll have even less to laugh about in September.....

And that is exactly what it is. Outside of PoSU all they are known for is the scandal. That is the cold, hard truth they don't want to accept.

This guy is too stupid to know that you don't lose your tradition or your national championships thru the passage of time.

If our new tradition is half empty stadiums then PedU's new tradition is covering up for a long term pedophile. Let's see him write that.

What is sad is PoSU's tradition is only ten years better than Pitt's. And theirs was thirty years ago. The only tradition they have today is one that nobody else wants.

You're wrong on a couple of points, Engineer. Garth is black, he's lived in Pittsburgh for some 30 years or so, and yes, he went to Penn State, but never graduated. Started out in sports as a suburban sports writer, wasn't very good at that, and went to the sports copy desk. He's now in charge of the PG's universal copy desk, which means he's the boss of all PG copy editors. Many believe he has some skills as a copy editor but many more at the PG think he was promoted to his current job by Editor Dave Shribman NOT entirely on merit. Oh, one other thing, I don't know Garth but I'm told that he's really not a bad guy. He must have had a fight with the wife before he wrote this crock. And, please guys, put a lid on all the complaints about the PG is a rag, deserves to go out of biz and let's e-mail his boss. You are all spitting into a hurricane. These are Garth's opinions, NOT the opinions of the paper in general or the people (at least the majority) who Garth works with and for. Garth deserves anything we want to say about him, but anyone who's inclined to throw rock at the paper in general and/or Garth's bosses is way off target, and frankly wasting their time. I'm very good friends with a guy at the PG (hence the source of the above information) and he's a Pitt guy and there are a lot of other Pitt guys at the PG. My friend said of Garth's comments: I could write the same things about Ped State and it's legions of JoeBots, but it's be done before. It's old news.
