PIAA with WPIAL following behind contributing to decline of high school football in Alle-Kiski

Valley put out some Division-I basketball players over the years: B.B. Flenory, Pipkins, Pryor, Billy Varner. Burrell's Tom Myers played for Duquesne.

Har-Brack (which is smaller (pre-merger) and became Highlands), had Dick and Ed Modzelewski and Cookie Gilchrist all do well in college and spent time in the pros. For those not familiar:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dick_Modzelewski - Outland Trophy winner, 2-time All-American, long NFL career.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ed_Modzelewski - Sugar Bowl MVP, #6th pick overall NFL draft to the Steelers.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cookie_Gilchrist - didn't go to college but went to the CFL first, then Buffalo Bills Ring of Fame, AFL MVP, first 1,000-yard rusher in AFL history.

Anyway, as far as Highlands goes, established I guess in the late '60s?, I can't think of one player that made an impact in college division-I football or basketball led alone the NFL. Not one. Anyone?

That’s some excellent research to mention Har-Brack. My Dad grew up with the Modzewski boys in Natrona and he called both of them the best athletes he’s ever seen given their size.

Highlands really has had no one. I believe in the early 2000’s they had a QB Matt Bonislawski who went to UCONN and UCONN was in the BE at the time. He was underwhelming to say the least. But, if you forced me to pick, I’d say him. But look at Riverview, Springdale, Leechburg, Plum...next to no one going D-1

Riverview, Leechburg, Springdale all pretty small school districts so not that surprising. Plum a different story.

That’s true, they are tiny, but so is Clairton and Aliquippa.

In 1995 Burrell had a team that won the WPIAL and should have been a state title winner in Class 2A, had they not been forced to play a team that played a Class 4A schedule and was undefeated (Bishop McDevitt). That team was good enough to win the state title and the only kid who went to a power 5 school was Seth Hornack who attended Pitt. However, that team was loaded with great athletes. They had only one kid who was over 200lbs and played for a state title. They were probably the smallest team ever to make it that far, but their speed and quickness of the overall team was exceptional. In the AK-Valley and particularly Burrell, there are absolutely no athletes like they had back then. I realize that that team was an anomoly, but that was almost 25 years ago. I believe Springdale won a class A title in 2003. That was the last Harrah for AK-Valley football. If a team makes the playoffs now, they get blown out in the first round every time.

Lee Hetrick played at Pitt. He was recruited by Penn State and all of the biggies back in the early 80's. He started a year or two around 1985 for Pitt.

Micah Mason was decent at Duquesne for basketball.

That's about it for Highlands.

I forgot about Mason and Hetrick. Good call.

Totally true. I think you have to go all the way back to Jeff Christy of Freeport, or Tommy Brown of Burrell who both wound up at the University of Pittsburgh and made some money in the NFL as well.

Eric Ravotti played for Freeport, Penn State and I think three years for the Steelers.

Albert Gallatin announced today that it was leaving the WPIAL because it cannot compete in football.

Toney Clemons?
Clemons was from Indiana not Kiski Valley, though he played against Kiski. IHS had a handful of pro players in their heyday of the 50's through maybe 1970 but Clemons is the only one to come out of there since. Only Bill Anderson (92') was scholarship-worthy at the major level (PSU), though a couple more had the talent but had off-field issues.

Toney Clemons was from Valley. New Kensington.

Maybe it is time for the Alle Khaki schools consider a move to D9 or another District

You are slipping. Cliff Stroud - ND. Tom Coury originally committed to Pitt. Left. Then ended up going to LA Tech.

Wasn’t there a qb that went to uconn from highlands? Early 00’s?

Absolutely correct, saw him many times. We also forgot Brandon Williams from Valley who was a pretty hyped running back, but turned out to be overated. He came to Pitt and wound up playing linebacker, had great speed, but not much else.

Erdlejac - Riverview (Duke)
Cox Brothers - Springdale (Iowa and Army)
Cappa - Riverview (WVU)
Manganello - Plum (Pitt)
Kopp - Valley (Pitt)
Williams - Valley (Pitt)

He did have a lot of offers. He would be the equivalent of a 4 star recruit. He ran about an 11 or so in the 100m. I definitely would not classify him as having great speed.

He was one of Walt's first big recruits but in actuality Barlow turned out to be a better RB, although he did end up as a serviceable LB

Back in the late 60s Freeport played Richland in the AIC. So if football is down, how did Pine-Richland become a super power?

If I’m remembering correctly that’s been more recent than the 60’s, at least into the late 70’s? Although thst’s still a long while ago.

Where did Pine Twp students go to school before Richland became Pine-Richland? I don't recall a Pine Twp high school back in those days?

Freeport played Pine Richland as late as 1996. They were both AA schools at the time. Remember one game during the remnants of a hurricane that my son played in. The players were so muddy, they hosed them off before allowing them into the locker room at halftime.

Pine Richland has exploded in population, tons of new high end housing developments all over the place. Mars area as well.
If you want to see an impressive HS football stadium, go take a look at PR's. It is bigger than some small college fields and has all the bells and whistles.

PR isn't looking back, they're still building like crazy around there. I guess Cranberry area is full.

Cranberry is supposed to continue increasing as well. They have a projection of 50k people by 2030. Mars, PR, SV, and NA school districts are where a lot of people want to live. I predict North Catholic will become a very formidable program at the 4A or 5A level within the next 5-10 years. They are in a great location.

And here we are in the AK Valley.....hello! Nothing happening. Horrible politicians. Horrible vision. I always said when the last SR Citizen leaves, please turn out the lights. Because that is all this area caters to (because they vote). Nothing happens here. Lot's of land to develop. Rt 28 is a pain, but it is nowhere as bad as it used to be. And it is not like the South Hills where you have to enter Pittsburgh via tunnel or same with the Eastern suburbs which are bottlenecks.

I just don't get it. 10 years ago, Highlands and Pine Richland were battling each other in football in the same section, both were competitive. 5 years ago, they were battling Mars. Now both of those schools have blasted by us.

Sorry for your frustration. It mirrors Pitt football and pretty much all those around us, in many ways. Even WVU has blasted by us.

Again I have to agree. This area is so dead and the population aging as well as declining is crushing football. So much so, that when we do have a great player, they often transfer to another school so they can be part of a good team, rather than attend their geographically correct highschool and carry that team. Some examples: John Petrishen was a safety from the Burrell district who went to Central Catholic. Skyy Moore was in the Valley district before transferring to Shadyside Academy and he will likely lead that team to a WPIAL title this year.

I also believe the presence of money and coaching at Pine and Mars are reasons that Highlands cannot compete. Although, I have to say Highlands facility is pretty nice. As has been noted, Mars and Pine are exploding with development and the homes that are being built are not for the average family. They are homes that most of us in the AK-Valley can only dream about.

Part of it is Cranberryitis. Lots of people look to escape Allegheny County taxes and aim for the more tax free Butler County. Cranberry exploded and quickly outgrew the infrastructure, most notably route 228 and to some extent 19.
On this corner of Butler County, we only have Rt. 356. It is two lane and has houses hugging its banks so it would be very difficult to expand.
The majority of folks here, as you say, are fine with things just the way they are. The Twp. supervisors are determined to limit growth or at least slow it down so the traffic and congestion are manageable.
Things aren't bad here, the school is thriving, and there is development, albeit far more slow than Cranberry. Look at the Industrial park at Slate Lick. Tons of room and right on Rt. 28 but it is stagnant. Northpointe I think it is called.
What will hamper Natrona and some of the other little towns is Allegheny County taxes.

Probably the biggest detriment to all out development here are the roads and ease of commute into Pittsburgh. The bottleneck at Highland Park is horrible, although I think they are slated to fix it. Rt. 28 maintenance in the winter is horrible, and the traffic coming out of RIDC in the winter is terrible. I know because I put up with it for 25 years!

It isn't for everybody, obviously, but folks around here are pretty happy. Not everyone craves small wings and sushi or French restaurants. If that is what you wanted, you should have had your mother move in with you instead of vice versa.
