Pinnock to Pitt

Had either Pinnock or Mathis had the reputation in May that they have now going into LOI day they both would have had much , much different recruiting experiences.
I know some on this site were very much questioning our inability for any DB commits aside from Ford thinking we would have to dip into the bottom of the barrel as more of our desired DB's committed elsewhere.
But as things have turned out I am not so sure we could have did any better considering how these 2 kids have matured & developed into real sweet prospects who are soon to be Panthers.
H2 PITT !!!

Pinnock's rating and his modest number of offers were a function of him being from CT, which is largely ignored, and his commitment to BC. But he was blowing up late, and for good reason. ND and several other big schools were trying to get him to visit. The kid is long and incredibly athletic. Runs a 4.46 40 and has a 40" vertical. And if you watch his film, he looks great in coverage and stopping the run. Drills people. Great recruit. I like him better than any of the other CBs we were recruiting.
Classic Narduzzi recruit, and classic job of being one step of others who noticed him late. ND, Tennessee and others were apparently recruiting him pretty hard of late, but it was too late, and Narduzzi sealed the deal.

Appreciate the info from you guys on Jason Pinnock... Sounds like another excellent late get for Coach Duzz and the staff.

Welcome to Pitt Mr. Pinnock.

Go Pitt.

Pinnock and Smith are prime examples of nards and this staff generally being super responsive and relentless.

Both had their coaches reaching out later in the process and the connections with this staff made them a place they looked at. THEN, they followed up, did quick evaluations, saw the talent, were decisive on connecting and offering and turning on a dime to make them priority recruits.

I like the kid's size but I think this board is sugar-coating this commitment a little bit. Pinnock is a plan C or D recruit for Narduzzi, #1 being Wade and #2 being Loe. He has a very similar offer sheet to the kids that have been playing in the secondary over the past 2 seasons.

The players that have been playing in the secondary were not recruited by this staff outside of Whitehead. The previous staff didn't have a clue about recruiting DB's. Narduzzi has s strong reputation for developing DB's.

His offer sheet is similar to Loe's. Sure, Loe had more offers, but most were from the likes of Iowa State, Georgia State, Maryland, Rutgers, etc...lower tier P5 and under schools. His best offers were from us, WVU, Louisville, and BC. Pinnock had offers from us and BC. It's not like Loe had offers from the upper tier P5 programs. And that is no slam on either player, both look to be great recruits. I just don't see a big difference between the two as far as talent.

The offer sheets and star ratings of these guys are similar to guys recruited before (Maddox, Lewis, etc...). I'm sure the current coaching staff has different skills and talents that they are looking for that makes a guy like Pinnock a better fit. I don't think the star ratings and offer sheets matter too much as long as they find guys that fit their system. Heck, Revis was a three star with similar size. Not saying these guys end up in anywhere near his level but it doesn't matter too much at this point.

No way in hell is Loe a better prospect than Pinnock

Unequivocally incorrect.
They, as most programs, did not know about the kid because of his being in Connecticut. His coach reached out in November, Conklin went to see a game and loved him, and at that point Pinnock became their number one target at CB.
There was no CB in the program until they landed Hamlin last year who had been recruited by Notre Dame. Pinnock had a visit scheduled to ND next weekend, and literally committed to Pitt with ND coaches on the way to meet him his home and possibly offer a scholarship.
He may or may not pan out, but he is a VERY high end athlete, the best athlete at CB they have recruited since Revis. Great size and build, a 40+ vertical and timed sub 4.5 speed.

I was going to post something along these lines.
It is interesting that neither Pinnock or Mathis were on the radar at the outset of this recruiting cycle - starting around May. Conklin had been working Mathis for a while, but it really had not popped up on the recruiting radar until it got hot and he decommitted from SC. And, they only connected with Pinnock in November.
But, for both of them, they identified them as top targets and aggressively closed on them.
It shows Nard's arc on the cycle is different, he just does not push to lock up the core of his class before the season like a lot programs do now. He clearly likes to wait out the season, evaluate their play in the fall and then target most of the kids they want to close on.
Also, he has said he thinks kids use early commitments as placeholders anyways. You end up sweating it while trying to hold the early commits anyways. So instead of playing defense with most of them, they end up playing offense.
We have seen him poach a LOT more commits from other programs than have been poached from him.

Dude, c'mon. We're talking about a kid with D1 offers from UCONN and BC. ND's class is falling apart from once being rated top 5 earlier in the year and they're throwing out offers to just about anyone to fill a subpar (to their standards) class. If this kid was the "best athlete since Revis" wouldn't Meyer/Saban/Dabo be knocking down his door to get his signature? I'm not saying this kid is a wasted scholly but this is a perfect example of our fanbase putting too much pressure on a kid before he even puts on a uniform. We spent this whole season bashing Chryst for bringing in secondary players with these types of offer sheets but since Narduzzi has a reputation for defense he'll be able to "coach them up." I remember saying the same thing about Maddox/Lewis.
