The Pirates took a big step toward getting ready to compete in 2018, saving $600,000 by losing Juan Nicasio on waivers to the Phillies.

“It’s a move that gives us flexibility heading into the offseason,” said general manager Neal Huntington. “The extra funds can help us in a lot of ways. For instance, exercising Wade LeBlanc’s option is now on the table. His 4.99 ERA could serve as the foundation for continuing our success with the bullpen into another season.”

Asked how the Pirates would manage without their setup man, Huntington said, “We weren’t expecting Nicasio to pitch much the rest of this year. His role has been to protect leads in the eighth inning. Our analytics department has some recent research that shows you can’t have a lead if you don’t score, so Nicasio wasn’t likely to pitch in September. We’re currently looking at ways to compete without scoring. We’re always looking for ways to improve the team going forward.”

When asked whether he’d miss having Nicasio in a setup role, Clint Hurdle responded, “No, not really. He was kinda young for that role. You need somebody with some real seasoning. We expect to get Joaquin Benoit back tomorrow. He’s just getting to the stage where he’s old enough to take on the eighth-inning duties.”

Joaquin Benoit fits right in to their philosophy of losing as many games as possible. It's actually embarrassing they gave a team another human being with a pulse for such a god awful reliever.

The extra funds can help us in a lot of ways. For instance....

When the fans start getting restless over the final month, Nutting can take his family to the Bahamas for vacation.
Nutting's daughters can get new cars.
Nutting could offer it to Cutch as a one-year extension.
The Nutting family can buy another small town newspaper to run into the ground.
Or Bobby can just put it in his pocket, where it can grow mold with all the other cash daddy gave him.

Gotta be killing Huntington to constantly have to spew this BS to try to cover for the worst owner in sports.

Huntington has the best job in baseball.
What is killing him? It's a cushion.

All he has to do is spout off a few key phrases from his stat guy Bullsh!te notebook and Nutting is happy.
And that no doubt make$ Neil happy.

The stat guy geniuses lap up every word he says.....attendance is down, but Nutting's green shades will just adjust payroll.

And NH will make the Bushers he signs sound like they are Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays incarnate....with the new stats one measures ball players by in Nuttingland.

600k
Think about that, a MLB team fretting over 600K. Don't even want to see the team they bring North in 2018.

Huntingdon gets to fail on purpose. Good work if you can get it.

I get his hands are tied, and stuff will happen that makes him look bad... but we could have gotten someone for Nicasio. I knew we overworked him to start with, so I was more than happy trading him. We are stacked in the minors with good relief arms, DuRapau, keselica, Tate Scioneaux, Heredia, Seth McGarry, Daniel Zamora, Geoff Hartlieb and even Taylor Hearn and Cam Vieaux are possible relievers in the majors.
Typically a good reliever (see Tony Watson) will get you a good return, so we should have dealt Nicasio at the deadline. But cutting him, or the Liriano trade last year, are just unacceptable for a major league team.

haven't the Phillies suffered enough?

I said in June that the season was over...it's getting earlier every year with an owner who cares nothing about winning an all about lining his pockets

It's bizarre how a club that is always "stacked in the minors" never seems to produce a winner at the only level where it matters.
Remember when the stat guy geniuses said don't sign anybody but a tomato can or two, so the Bucs don't block their young talent.

That was good.

But the real odd thing in the end was it basically ended up being a Nicasio for Benoit trade if you really look at it.And guess who go the better end of the deal...The Phillies...
