Team Batting average. Currently at .197. Will they break the Mendoza line? I’m going with under .207 which would break the record set by Washington

Strikeouts. Currently at 68 I think through 7 games which would project to 1583. Good news is that the MLB record held by the Twins in 2023 is 1654. That record would appear to be safe as long as Canario doesn’t get much PT. He’s off to a hot start with 2 strikeouts in 3 at bats I’ll go with over 1500

The Pirates have sucked for many years (aside from the few Wild Card seasons) but this year’s lineup takes the cake. Other than Cruz and Reynolds, is there a hitter who would plug into the lineup of any playoff-contending team? I’m not even thinking of the Dodgers, I’m thinking about the Brewers, Twins or Diamondbacks.

Thankfully there is Skenes to draw excitement for 6 innings every 6 days.

Christian Yelich is hitting 083, William Contreras 074 and Rhys Hoskins 158 for the Brewers. So probably.

Only Nutting could take a team that had some promise last year and totally destroy any possibility of that team of competing. As you noted with Skenes and the other young starters there is some reason to be excited or at least interested in this team. Most of that has gone out the window

Some promise last year? With Skenes they matched the previous year’s win total. They treaded water.

I mean I get that they appeared to be in the race for the division. But after 162 games a team is exposed to be exactly what they are.

Joey Bart is the only other position player I think would start on a few playoff teams.

They had a nice core of starters and fhere are some pieces in place. They could be contenders if they went out and got a legit first base another bat in the out field and a closer. And of course getting a legit staff. I’m just saying they were entertaining and competitive last year for a good part of the season

They are back to being a joke this year as they made zero moves to upgrade

I like Nick G, IKF is decent, Reynolds is solid. They need to get Cruz out of center and move him to right. Had they added a decent first basemen, another OF bat, and a closer they could have contended this year (maybe a wild card). They didn’t even try to improve the team. It’s now a joke

this quote from Nutting tells you everything you need to know about the Pirates:

"And Nutting — he’s hardly blameless — made his feelings on the Pirates known during a pregame interview with the Post-Gazette’s Noah Hiles by saying: “I think I’ve done everything I can to provide the tools and resources to the team. There is a point where it becomes execution.”

There is no hope as long as he is in charge.

Zero argument about not improving the team. I mean Pham and Frazier? FFS. The joke was clear a month ago.

It remains to be seen what Horwitz is but regardless he wasn’t near enough. Hopefully he’s not the modern day Pat Meares.

The most important thing they can do is save his arm for the Yankees. A fan at PNC Park was wearing a Yankees Skenes jersey. Smart to get that before the price goes up

Without looking at the catching situation of every team, I'm not even sure that's true. Let's remember that it was just last season when a team that was only peripherally a playoff contender (they finished 9 games out of the last wild card spot) released Bart because he wasn't good enough to play for them.

Now Bart certainly did play better for the Pirates than he had for the Giants. So there probably are some playoff contender who would at least play him a decent amount. But it's going to take more than 250 at bats from last year to think that he's really turned the corner.

If Nutting was a serious owner Cherrington and Shelton would be fired today. At this point it’s not just about Nutting not spending money it’s about bad trades, bad manager, bad player development. The on field players are so bad it’s comical. The scouting department is a joke. One MLB Player from their Dominican training academy. Again if Nutting is serious both Cherrington and Shelton have to go NOW

Well he is a serious owner. He's serious about banking profits and he's doing a bang up job of that while attempting to provide the illusion of fielding a competitive team.

Sorry to correct you but the more accurate phrase would be.........."if he were serious about even fielding a competitive team........"

I know thats likely what you meant

Side thought. I don’t feel sorry for him as he’s making bank But I can imagine a competitor like Skenes has to be frustrated that the team he’s playing on has zero chance of winning. And more over knowing that he’s stuck here for a few more years with no prospects of playing high stakes baseball. That has to suck going from an environment like LSU to the pirates

Yes a “competitive” team. You’re right I should have added that word.
