Obviously very early but it is looking likw Capel might be doing what we all thought he would when he got the job. He's had a great few months.

These ratings are going to change, so I wouldn’t get too hung up on it right now. This summer has been encouraging though.

It all comes down to performance this year, for me. He’s got some intriguing pieces to work with, so let’s see this team actually take a step forward and resemble what we saw from him in year 1 rather than what we’ve seen the last few. If we still aren’t getting it done on the court, I don’t think the steps forward in recruiting change the sentiment that this is make or break for Capel

And decommits could happen--especially if next season's team underperforms (sure hope not) and there isn't a winning overall season.

I mean, this is an improvement from what we've been used to lately, but getting the 170th and 185th nationally ranked players is all of a sudden some great feat? Dixon used to live in that 120 range, and people complained about his recruiting ad nauseam.

Basketball recruiting team rankings are way more flawed to begin with, because a team that has two high 4-stars will probably be below a team that has six 3-stars, but the two 4-stars could very well make a much bigger impact; class sizes vary a ton when you only have 13 scholarships. But, no - this is not really what I expected Capel to be doing here. I honestly thought he'd be bringing in 5-stars within his first few years, and maybe that's my own dumb fault. This class is fine so far, but my God... it's really not THAT impressive at all.

I’d hold tight on making any firm takeaways based on their current ranking. Carrington’s a four star, top 100 type from the two ranking services who have actually evaluated him (247 and ESPN) - Rivals didn’t even make him a profile until Panther-Lair staff asked them to. His composite ranking is being dragged down by the fact that Rivals and on3 haven’t even assigned him a rating, so he’s a zero star for composite purposes.

I think Carrington’s going to end up right around #100, he’s been one of the big breakout guys in AAU this summer, and Barnes probably around #150, though he’s been hurt and isn’t playing EYBL so he might not get a bump at all.

Even if it is 100 and 150, that's fine, but it's hardly some gaudy class.

Vanderbilt last year - 98, 115, 122, etc.

Penn State last year - 111, 135, 180 ,183, etc.

BC last year - 120, 126, etc.

Nebraska last year - 101, 174, #1 JUCO, etc.
Nebraska the year before - 29, 104, etc.

Creighton in '21 - 49, 69, 74, 76, 152.

Dayton in '21 - 48, 139, 147, etc.

I mean, the list is WAY bigger than this, and I could easily make this post 30x what it is in length if I took the time to do so; I'm not stopping for a shortage of examples. I just don't see how an ACC team recruiting at that level is all that noteworthy. Capel himself has pulled in better classes (talking about on paper only) in '18 and '21.

That's a great take. Nothing is as telling as comparing a partial class to previous years complete classes.

🙄

Or you could improve your reading comprehension and see that I was specifically talking about landing the 100th and 150th players. If he goes and gets two high 4-stars on top of that, I'll be the first to congratulate him.

Nobody’s saying it’s gaudy. But it’s competitive in the ACC, which is the bar. 2022 and 2020 (despite losing a few guys from it, they still have the two highest ranked guys in Hugley and Jeffress) were also competitive in the ACC.

We’ll be in a good spot if we can continue to collect 2-3 solid high school recruits per cycle like the ones we’ve gotten over the past few cycles, and supplement that with transfers who can play. But ultimately, basketball recruiting is hard - that’s proven by the fact that you can list schools like Creighton and Dayton getting top 100 kids.

Its only July. While the OP is premature with the national ratings this early, its a decent start. The class has a chance to be the best Pitt class of the Capel era when its all said and done. Jaylen Curry is coming in for his second visit in September.

We are in the top 3 for Papa Kante and his decision is coming most likely in the next 2 months. He has been really solid this summer. And yes, we have a real chance here.

And Ty-laur Johnson from Bronx NY is the star who should be at the top of the board. He has been killing it and is high on Pitt and wants to visit Pitt in the fall. His teammate Kante already visited. He's been quoted saying it would be fun playing with other NY guards on a college team and we already have a big one from NY (Dior Johnson from NY) here who I do think will be in college multiple years (Pitt or somewhere else). Tylaur Johnson is good enough to be pushing Top 40 Nationally. He is a star like RJ Davis and Posh Alexander from NY before him that we missed on. And there is a very good chance he stays in the northeast region in college.

There are others that we are recruiting in 2023 that are good, but we are on real solid footing with a real chance with the 3 names above. Let's see how it plays out.

And that's completely fine. Although if anyone has taught me not to buy into the "so and so is visiting" hype, it's Capel. Still, my point was simply that recruiting the "100th" and 150th rated national players is more or less just holding ones own in the ACC, and it's nothing that even Capel himself is really a stranger to (Drumgoole, Toney, McGowens, Hugley, Jeffres, etc.). Other than some terrible calculations in that Efton Reid class, this is basically where Capel recruits; it's not anything all that new. If we're talking about what we thought he might do when he got the job, well, I think a lot of people thought we'd be landing more of the Hunter Dickinson, Kofi Cockburn, etc. types. It's fine what he's doing now. No complaints with this current class or what he brought in for '22. But I still wouldn't call it meeting initial expectations just yet.

Can't yet until/if he gets a 5....

Its a normal class for Pitt BB the recruits here are listed as 3 stars. It's way to early not too many commits.

If Pitt could land 1 of those 3 that would be a W.

If you want to go look for recruiting ranking success- On3 has Jorge #79, Johnson #86 and Guillermo #92. Their composite has them #173, #120 and #46.

After watching more of Guillermo- On3's ranking looks more accurate.

Carrington through 4 games at the Peach Jam.

11.5 points per game
4.25 rebounds per game
2.5 assists per game
3.25 turnovers per game
2 steals per game

These are solid numbers for the most part and his defense has been good. I thought the first couple games he watched the action and was standing around too much in the offense. He picked it up today. These numbers above at the Peach Jam are what a top 100ish player puts up, maybe a little higher, top 80-100ish.

The numbers Carrington put up in the last EYBL session prior where he was one of the top players overall are Top 30-40 national type numbers. The numbers Carrington put up at the DMV live are Top 75ish numbers. The numbers Carrington put up at the EYBL sessions prior in the spring are borderline top 125-150ish numbers.

He has stepped up his game over the summer. I want to see how he finishes the peach jam tournament to get a better idea of where he should be nationally. There is enough on the table to justify he is a legit top 100 player right now.

And fwiw, Prephoops has bumped Carrington up to #72 nationally and a 4 star, which is Carrington's highest rating. So a couple different services are starting to become "higher" on him. As I said above, I want to see how he finishes the peach jam.

What's Marlon Barnes been up to this summer?

What's Marlon Barnes been up to this summer?

I only have the stats for Barnes for 7 games. All 7 are from April. I do not know how many minutes he played in these games although a couple of the games were almost all zeros in the stats column, so he played very little in a a few of the games either because of injury or something else.

6.25 points per game
3.125 rpg
1.25 apg
.625 steals per game
1 turnover per game

Dellquan Warren plays on the same team, the point guard. For all the hype and hoopla for Warren because of his nba athletic ability, he is a walking turnover machine with the basketball and has more problems than X in that category.

Carrington and Curry going right at each other 1 on 1 in todays game. Curry looks pissed off coming off the bench in limited action the last 2 games.

Curry has 13 points and 3 assists after the 1st quarter. Carrington has 6 points. Curry's team opens up a 15 point lead.

Carrington with 9 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist in the half. His play was quite good for the most part.

Curry with 13 points, 5 assists, 2 rebounds at the half. His team leads by 18. He was the star of the first half.

Carrington has to be more assertive on offense and call for the ball.

Curry's "team" couldn't shoot the ball into the ocean the last 3 games. They have 10 three pointers at the half shooting 63% from 3.

Curry's team beats Carrington's by 17

Curry with 21 points, 11 assists, 5 rebounds. Curry shot 6-13.

Carrington scores 30 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists. Carrington was 12-16 shooting. He couldnt miss and was scoring from all over and was superb today.

Really fun game watching these 2 go after one another in different parts of the game.
