Pitt baseball wins opener

Pitt softball was 3-2 at last check. Very surprising.

Opened the season in a round robin tournament at UCLA. Played 4 games, all against Southern California teams. The UCLA field is 10 minutes from my house. I can drive there without making a single turn until I make a left to enter the parking lot. I saw their win the first day and the 4-1 loss to UCLA the second day. UCLA is the defending NCAA champion.

Too early to tell how good any of the other Cali teams are, but I frankly was surprised Pitt looked decent considering how terrible they were last year. Brandy Knight pitched well in the win that I saw. Pitching has been a real problem, and when the HC left for Louisville she took with her the star incoming HS pitcher. In the loss to UCLA, a freshman went the distance. She gave up a 2-run HR in the 1st and another in the 6th, but was pretty solid. Heard some people say that UCLA has some regulars taking Olympic redshirt years, but they still are UCLA.

They are playing in another tournament this week, and opened it by beating Michigan State 3-2.

Used to be able to see almost all of their games live on Periscope. Former P Sarah Dawson’s dad went to almost all of the games and broadcast them with his video camera. She has graduated so that probably won’t be a possibility any longer.

Update: Pitt split a double header today in the tournament at Clemson. Beat Maryland 8-5 in their first game. Pitt gave sophomore Abby Edwards a 5-0 lead after 1.5 innings, but Edwards gave up 5 runs in the 2d. Brittany Knight came in and shut Maryland out for the remainder of the game.

I believe the freshman Miller started the second game, against MSU. Pitt brought in Edwards down 2-1. She got battered again and MSU won 11-3.

Baseball beat Iowa today and moved to 3-1.

Softball blew a late lead and lost a close one to maryland to fall to 4-5.

9-1 after today.

But it should also be pointed out that the combined record of our opponents as of this moment is 25-62 and that only one of our opponents (St. Joe's at 5-4) is above .500, so the competition level has not been high at all.
