For a while now I have been posting how neat it is to live here in Tucson and all of the college hoops coverage almost every day. I get it that it is because UA is the major sports news since there are no pro teams, but nonetheless it is still super cool. They have been running Hansen’s Top 100 for the past few months. These are the best Tucson athletes in all sports. Most I don’t know but there are some I do. Dell Urich a golf pioneer. Terry Franconia, Teddy Bruschi, Jennie Finch, Adia Barnes, Kerri Strug, Steve Kerr and today is Sean Elliot.

The photo that they posted with the article was one in which Sean Elliot is dunking over a team in the 1989 Fiesta Classic in the McKale Center. The team he is dunking over are our Pitt Panthers. Darelle Porter is the main guy getting posterized. I believe Brian Shorter is in the photo but you can’t see his face and only the second part of his number which is definitely a 0. And I think Sean Miller is in the background. Only see half of his face but no numbers, so I am thinking the number is single digit.

I thought it was cool they traveled that far to play back then. Looking at the next year Arizona repaid the trip with a game in Pittsburgh.

Somewhat wonder if they didn’t try and find a photo that would make Sean Miller look a little bad in it. LOL.

Amazingly, living out here for 2 1/2 months and after the voiding of Sean as coach you would think the program would suffer in terms of recruiting. It seems like it is not and I do really think there is truly something about a school’s name that attracts players as much as a coach. Seriously, why would you come just because Tommy Lloyd is the new coach? I suppose he must have done some amazing recruiting at Gonzaga, but still.

If memory serves Pitt kicked their ass that day. And the Arizona floor painting of the cactus was pretty cool for its time.

Actually Arizona and Sean Elliott kicked our ass that night. But the following year, we beat the Wildcats at the Civic Arena for one of the few high points of that 12-17 campaign when Sean Miller was injured.

I believe Judd Buchler was on that team? Who played for the Bulls w MJ.

Didn’t Pitt lose to Arizona also in 1991-92? I have this memory being up 66-65 and losing, 85-66.

Names maybe mean something for a coach or two after someone takes the program to the top. But not after that. Ask DePaul and Georgetown.

Yes -- we lost to Arizona the following year. I think you are remembering the game correctly.

I also remember the entire 91-92 year being very strange.

I don’t really agree with that. Georgetown has had some really good recruiting classes over the last 40 years. They continue to do so because of their name. DePaul was such an enigma, that I would not put them into a Georgetown or UA class.
