Pitt $1,611
Drexel $1,000
Penn $876
Carnegie Mellon $643
Chimeron Bio $600
Magee-Womens Research Fdn $568 (Pitt affiliated)
Integral Molecular $522
VaxForm & US Specialty Formulations $512
Thomas Jefferson $508
Bucks County Biotech Center $430
Ossianix $420
Penn State Coll of Med $416
Blumberg Institute $373
Evys Bio $322
Aptagen $320
Apogee Biotech $306
Wistar Institute $300
Melior Pharma $213
Respana Therapeutics $60

$10 million in total funding (23 grants)

But, it is also glaring that no Pittsburgh-based biotech companies received any funding. Pittsburgh has to do a better job seeding biotech.

Is that total correct?? Looks like Pitts share is 16 mill plus.

This may be a silly question, but where is the money coming from? General taxpayer funds? Federal grants? ???

$1.6 million, not counting Magee-Womens Research Foundation. Every person doing research at Magees is Pitt Faculty, although the foundation is a separate entity. So one could argue it is $2.2m.

This is only state money, and it isn't really that significant of an amount. Only $10 million was distributed statewide. But it shows who is on the forefront of things in the state, and it is Pitt, not Penn. But as I also said, it shows Western PA is lacking in its Biotech and Pharma industry.

Do you have any info on how UPMC is doing with a vaccine trial?

Thanks,

joe

UPMC/Pitt is participating in a vaccine trial. They aren't running it. They're one site out of 87 nationwide that is part of a national initiative and the vaccines tested aren't going to those necessarily those being developed at Pitt...and this is the largest trial network in the world. The vaccine being tested right now is Moderna's and NIH's mRNA vaccine. It is in Phase 3.

Pitt is currently developing 3 different vaccine candidates itself. The one it was developing with the Pasteur Institute in France and Themis Bio was purchased by Merck who is moving it into clinical trials in Europe. I don't know how much Pitt is still involved. Pitt's other two candidates aren't in clinical trials yet as far as I know.

So how do you bring Biotech and Pharma to Western Pa?
