Key comment on Stadium: Both project team members and community members who attended the meeting mentioned several times that a change in the location of Pitt’s football field could be a part of the master plan. Many believe that Heinz Field’s distance from campus deters students from attending games.

One member of the audience interjected that if students are forced to take a bus, even home games feel like away games.

Marshall Goodwin — a resident of Oakland for the last 50 years — expressed concern for the amount of student living facilities and a lack of housing for other residents.

“I’m very concerned that we are losing any opportunities for faculty or anyone that works in the institutions to actually live in Oakland and be able to walk to work because the encroachment of student housing is not controlled,” Goodwin said.
Got to love that quote. The guy is concerned about more student housing while others are expecting a new stadium. What's funny is both are likely to be disappointed.

There would be some support from the local Oakland business community for such a project. More so than what was available 20-30 years ago. Recently, Pitt's relationship with the Oakland community has been very positive. I think that some of that stems from Pitt being less of a commuter school than it has been in the past. Also, Pitt grads are much more prominent within the neighborhood post graduation.

The problem is that they gave away their stadium space, and now there would be a ton of people coming out of the woodwork to protest such a decision. And they all vote. The only way it could work is to have the decision already made and moving along by the time these types of meetings occur. That way you are telling people how it's going to be while pretending to collect their comments.

A new stadium would have to be built on the existing campus footprint or on land contiguous to the campus that is currently off the tax roles. You're right H2P, there will be some protests but there always are for everything so that doesn't matter. The fact is that many more folks would be in favor of such a project and they have more power than a small rabble of protesters.

Pitt has 24k full time students and the student season tx is at 12k. Compare that to other schools and you will realize that is not that different.

At last recognition by an official entity that Steve Pedersen's stadium deal with the Rooneys is not beneficial to Pitt students.

I'm not sure that that many would be in favor of such a project.
