I was at Pro Day for a while and it was great to catch up with a lot of people I haven’t seen in a while. I know I’m getting really old when guys I covered like Eric Thatcher and Max Gruder are now in or approaching their 40s and working as scouts and pro personnel guys.

Karl will have much more on all of this when it is over but a few observations…

1) Despite it being a really down year for Pitt NFL prospects there are still a ton of NFL teams represented and evaluating players. The last six years Pitt has had more guys (19) drafted than anyone but Clemson in the ACC and teams know that defensive players especially are going to be prepared the right way.

Maybe the two top prospects from Pitt are Ben Sauls and Donovan McMillon.

Sauls probably had an OK day. I don’t think he changed his status much. He showed he can boom the ball but was a little erratic kicking field goals. He did fine and teams know him, have seen him and understand his talent.

McMillon probably had the best day of anyone. He ran the 40 twice. The scouts closest to me had him (unofficially) at 4.43 and then 4.46 so he was moving. If nothing else he guaranteed he will get drafted with those times. He is a safety and could develop into a hybrid slot guy and special teams guy in the NFL. He clearly helped himself today.

Brandon George was the other player who ran well and in general had a good day.

Again, Karl will have much more after it is over but those are a few quick thoughts
